Successful communication is at the heart of great teamwork, but words can mean different things to different people. We all tend to project our own biases onto commonly used words.
Mary and David Sherwin - experts in team dynamics - have devised Teamwords, a collaborative card-based team-building system that cuts through differences to create consensus.
If we can agree on the meaning of words at the start of projects, we will understand each other much better as we work together.

About Mary Paynter Sherwin:
Mary Paynter Sherwin is a seasoned writer, educator, and public speaking coach with expertise in helping individuals and schools develop rigorous curricula and activities for their learning needs. She has worked on multiple successful training programs and product innovation toolkits, such as Kaiser Permanente’s i60 Innovation Toolkit with Propelland and frog’s Collective Action Toolkit. Along with David, she is on the faculty of PNCA’s MFA in Collaborative Design, and was formerly an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s College of California.
About David Sherwin:
David is a design leader, teacher, and strategist with deep expertise in creating new products, services, and training solutions. At companies such as frog, Lynda.com, and LinkedIn, he has led and coached dozens of large-scale product and service design teams, as well as helped to create training workshops and events for clients such as UNICEF, DARPA, and the World Economic Forum. Along with Mary, David is co-author of design bestseller Creative Workshop and Turning People into Teams.

Teamwork is mentioned as important but companies tend to fail to cultivate. If we can better communicate at work and if we can understand each other better as people, we’ll be on our way to building something even more beautiful. Need to rmb that

The word professional usually/ normally refers to doctors, lawyers, engineers and the like. But there seems to be a trend to apply it to low skill, non - qualification type jobs. I believe it's because they can't say they are qualified but still take payment.

I think using "professional" was the worst example to use...who thinks about lunch and clothes when this word appears?! 🤣 competence, wise in a specific field etc. suits better..

They didn't ask for the definition. So you can just say what comes to your mind when you hear the word "professional". And for different people,they think different things. Like for example if you ask me 'What do you think when you hear the word "lawyer"?',I would say Saul Goodman

That is a great idea. Each of the team members should first define the meaning of "a team" or "team work". And then, they will have to agree to a single definition so that they set boundaries as to what they should and shouldn't do. It's give structure to the team. It's somewhat obvious when you really think about it, but it's the key in having a good communication.

U just gotta pursue a state of flow/mindfulness/critical point/, where u experience the moment for what it is, and when you feel that there is a disconnect in the group's experience/understanding of the moment/idea, then you clarify the intention/wording to get everybody back on the same page so that you can work as a team effectively. Being in the same moment (common understanding of the facts). And understanding ideas in the same way is vital for good teamwork.

Interesting that something as simple as adjectives unrelated to the project the group is focused on can foster the beginnings of better communication. I seems to me the idea here is to provide a central starting point for individuals to learn how each communicates best. Not only are they learning individual preferences, but also how each group member expresses themselves and communicates these preferences. I'm guessing both aspects help improve efficiency in the group. Excellent suggestion.

Funny that the bosses are not on the team. Makes the team concept seem like a manipulation.

Not really. I don't think you're experienced delegated teams, where there is no bosses involved in the work. In fact, a lot of the bosses wouldn't know where to start doing the work. Most organisations have also eviscerated their middle management and supervisory roles to save costs, even in processing work. So the team doing the might be all operational staff at the same grade. So, no bosses are required for team work.

This really depends on the role the boss has to take. If your boss has a delegation role rather than a leadership role it's fair and expected for them not to be involved with your team. However, it would still be productive for both of you to participate in this game with each other as it will help them learn how to better delegate your team; hopefully improving your relationship.

Management do team building exercises. The difference is that at the lower end of the workers, they don't show them how to lead the team.

I’d absolutely hate a job that asked me to dive into my “feelings” in the workplace. Just give me my job and let me work. I’m not showing up for a therapy session! If we are all being honest, the issue with work harmony and flow isn’t with our language, it’s that a class of managers justifying their jobs needs to get out of the way so people can actually do the job they were hired for.
