Thank you for this upload. Super new to the SACD/DSD scene and after scoring a Yamaha CD3000, I quickly realized I was bound to its Saber DAC (which is great) but does not have the soundstage of the Pontus II by a long shot. I now a much cheaper Sony UBP-X800M2 on the way because it's one of few that plays multi-channel SACD. That converter is popping up in all my searches, glad to hear you made it work with Denafrips equipment. Cheers.

To listen to my SACDs on my Lumin DAC, I use software by Sonore called "iso2dsd." The software reads the DSD data from my oppo 103. You make a boot USB thumb drive that boots the Oppo so the data can be read on our network. Enter the IP address of the Oppo in the software to connect to it. Once connected you can copy either stereo or multi-channel tracks. Once I have the files I stream them from Roon to my DAC. Best of all it's free and I don't have to swap disks.

Great set up, very nice selection of components. Intriguing topic. I think for me, the biggest issue with SACD is availability. Since I am not a vinyl fan, I am not used to paying over $50 per album, let alone over $85 for rarer albums. Pretty awesome to see a younger man taking on this topic from the 90's. Nice job on this video.

In the early 2000’s, with SACD still in its infancy, Classic Records (which has since morphed into Analogue Productions) released a number of SACD’s along with the vinyl, of classics from the Mercury Living Presence and RCA Living Stereo catalogs. Some were even released in their original 3 channel master tape editions for use on a multi-channel SACD machine. Classic records had access to the original tape masters, the urtext, as they say, and remember, those tapes were 20+ years younger then than they are today.

Great! I liked your music selection. Additionally, I appreciated the recognition that SACD/DSD is the best format that we have for recording music. And, for many, your i2c is a excellent solution. However, you are correct that that box is another disruption in the signal path. While your solution is definately viable for many, a better solution would be: 1) just have the best SACD player available. The problem here is that you are using an older Oppo player. For example, the DAC, in the newer Oppo players, the UDP 203 and UDP 205, were significently better. Then, 2) If one could match a great player to an excellent Processor and system, that supports SACD/DSD, Like the Yamana CX-A5200, there is no better way to hear music, other than live, arguably. Moving up to a better player/system combination you will be further astounded. Also, while streaming has its place, keeping our eye on the SACD/DSD prize and supporting it, is the best audo format that we have, at the present time - above everything else. I have observed, lately, folks starting to understand SACD/DSD. Let's do more of it.

Julia, I looked at the specs for the Yamaha. It supports DSD files, but not DSD over HDMI, so you are mistaken about its ability to support SACD natively. Decoding DSD over HDMI is very rare these days; perhaps only SONY still supports it.

I have used the same box as shown and this solution between my Oppo 105D and Pontus 2 dac .. it works and sounds better than the SPDIF connections direct from the Oppo 105 to the Pontus dac. There are a couple of points to note .. I2S does not have a standard for the pin allocations .. so dacs like the Pontus 2 which has the ability to alter the pins via selection on the front panel is a must. The Oppo 105D & the Pontus 2 connection over I2S was easy as the default pins allocation worked .. but other players/dacs my be different. Use the shortest hdmi cables that you can .. I used 30cm cables and use a reasonable quality cable. Also note that on my box and as mentioned on other sites on the web this box reverses the channel balance for SACD discs .. I tested this by listening to a hybrid cd/sacd and noted that this in fact happened. So my solution was to get a cable made with balanced ends from the pontus 2 to two RCA input ends into my intergrated amp .. one being made reversed .. Snake Oil cable USA .. this cable is mentioned on the Denafrips web site. So now it all works fine .. I just have to change the input selection on my amp when I play a SACD to get the correct stereo balance. Hope this information helps

I completely agree, the sound of SACD through high quality gear is vastly better than hearing it in CD format, all other things being equal. Esoteric SACDs are especially well produced. The remastering process can give the engineers the opportunity to correct all kinds of flaws in the original LP pressing, provided the remastering engineers are good. If the master tape was well produced and preserved, the end result sometimes does beat the original LP. I was an LP absolutist until I got an integrated transport/DAC that's top quality, and it opened my ears.

Good to know! I think that circuit must stripping the copy protection off the HDMI protocol, probably explaining why it’s sold more as a black market device. Some DACs these days have an HDMI input that includes the license to decode the output from a player directly, but this solution looks like a no-brained for anyone already owning a DAC as exceptional as yours, however, lacking an HDMI in. I really appreciate your recommendation of a streamer as well! I’ve been looking for something with a cleaner output than a MacBook or an iPad to stream Qobuz. I’m going to give that a try. I have had three AVR’s that do DSD 2.8MHz/5.6MHz DSD (Marantz, Sony, and Onkyo). Except for Sony (obviously), DSD is done over PCM (just like DTS-HDMA (PCM 96/24 delivered via DTS bitstream). They don’t sound anywhere near as good as my PS Audio DirectStream DAC with Windom installed including the Sony. Implementation is everything these days with DAC’s. Just like it was with Phono Preamps many years ago. The RIAA curve never changed but it’s implementation is everything.

Ever since Oppo began outputting DSD through the HDMI outputs beginning with the 103 player. I just run it to my Onkyo PR-SC5509 pre/pro-which decodes DSD. Right now I have an Oppo 205 and enjoy streaming DSD from my backup hard drive to the Oppo and playing it on my system. I also play my regular CD's through the same output. Maybe it helps? Probably more the May 'ladder DAC". I do still use and like my vinyl collection but DSD is winning me over to digital. On our living room setup I output my Sony player into the TV - then out on an optical cable to my aging Denon receiver (forget the model but it was top of the range when it came out) which has no HDMI inputs. I am reporting to you my first listening experience of the Denafrips Pontus II that I received last week. My system: preamp Mcintosh C2600, Power amp MC462, balanced interconnections, and B&W 802N in a dedicated listening room. After 5-days break-in, I had my first audition yesterday. In brief, I did NOT hear much difference between the Pontus II and my Mcintosh C2600 (built in DAC). I used coax on the Pontus to play non-SACDs; then coax on the C2600 to play the same. I also played SACDs from my SACD player via RCA to C2600. The only thing that I haven’t done is to use the I2S on the Pontus as I am still waiting for that converter box that I ordered on eBay. In general, C2600 has an outstanding DAC, thanks to Mcintosh, Pontus II is also excellent but quite on par with the C2600. Both have a good sound stage. I do hear some details from the Pontus, but definitely not as much as others saying “very holographic, huge sound stage, extremely detailed” and etc, etc… To characterize the sound quality between the two, the C2600 is a boy and Pontus is a girl. AM I missing something? Please help.
@poetryonplastic
@poetryonplastic 2 года назад
Hi Johnny, while I've never used a C2600, I have a lot of experience with the DA1 dac module mcintosh uses on many of their products (do you have DA2?), and I can safely say that they sound very different from the pontus. How many hours of play has the Pontus gotten? Something with so many caps in it may require a break in period of close to 200 hours. Now, the Pontus is likely not going to be as super detailed as a lot of chipset DACs out there, but in my experience it more than makes up for it in soundstage and three dimensionality. That and a smooth non fatiguing sound signature make it one of my favorites. Be sure to experiment with the filter options on the Pontus. You have "No Oversampling" "OS Slow" and "OS fast". Most people tend to like "No Oversampling" and "OS Slow". If you don't know how to change these filter settings theres a handy video by Alvin at Vinshine audio that can walk you through the steps. Hope this helps!

@@poetryonplastic Thank you for your reply. I got the same suggestions from Alvin on the break-in time. In fact, from my last night audition (the 5th day) I have already heard some improvements. I will continue to burn it for another week and report back to you. I did try NOS/OS, I found OS has a tiny opening for the sound but very subtle, almost no difference. I am listening to classical music mostly, I would appreciate your suggestion of OS Slow or Fast setting and I will continue to learn the set up as well. One more thing I also have noticed is that the signal level on the Pontus II is kinda low. I have to turn the volume way up to have the normal sound level for my room. Don’t know if this is correct. @pranadistribution6033
@pranadistribution6033 Год назад
FYI, I2S doesn't have a termination standard, which is why you can see it with different terminations depending upon the manufacturer. It is also the native language of digital conversion. Whether you go into a unit with USB, SPDIF, AES/EBU, etc. before it gets to the conversion method, (be it chip or R2R module ) , it will be converted to I2S. Historically I2S hasn't seen as much use (despite sounding better in most situations) due to a few reasons; one, no standard termination (we mostly see HDMI or RJ45) and two, it wasn't meant to traverse longer distances wherein it can be subject to noise. There are many proponents of I2S (your own Denafrips, Sonnet/Metrum, MSB, Lessloss, W4S) and a fair number have now conquered the distance issue. So, in the not too distant future, it will once more be utilized more generously across the market-place. Looking forward to hearing how you like your SOTM. They, along with Audiobyte, Rendu and similar companies, make great little boxes that will take your USB, reclock and clean it, and send it out I2S. I found these solutions to offer an improvement worth the investment. Such things should be auditioned within your system as YMMV. (for instance, most dacs are engineered to sound best around one of their many digital inputs...and in many dacs the usb board often ends up hosting and re-clocking for more than one input. ) Thanks for your videos. I'm about to ease into your classical LP music collection video.

I do have one question for you: Can your streamer read a USB attached storage containing multichannel DSD or FLAC files, and send the I²S signal in multichannel format to a DAC? Maybe your Denafrips only handles stereo conversion. But if you had a multichannel DAC, would the Metronome send the I²S signal *in multichannel* format? Thank you, and kudos on your musical tastes! We're on the same page, pretty much. Gabe

Great video. Some things I’ve learned along the way… SACD is essentially a file system and does not have to carry DSD. For example, BIS released the complete Bach Organ Organ works on SACD using PCM audio (it was originally recorded in PCM). The collection went from 17 CDs to 5 SACDs due to the difference in storage capacity of the two media types. There were a few SACD players that could be hacked to extract the unencrypted audio on the SACD to a hard drive where it could be streamed. I’ve seen them pop up on e-Bay. The Esoteric SACDs do sound fantastic but I am a bit skeptical of the ones that were originally PCM. Converting PCM to DSD (or vice versa) is lossy. How would the fidelity be increased? I have the Abbado/Hindemith and Shostakovich/Haitink in both versions but have not had a chance to compare yet.
@poetryonplastic
@poetryonplastic 2 года назад
Well I know that Esoteric remaster everything themselves, recordings where the original masters are in PCM are upsampled to higher resolution and then converted later. I'm not an expert in the technical aspects of this process, but i know one of the esoteric recordings I have (Karajan's last Tchaikovsky cycle) sounds much, much better than the original cd. Obviously working with a native DSD master file is always going to be better than converting, but sometimes you work with what you have. The results are really what concern me though.

There is a RU-vid video of Ted Smith, the designer of both models, being interviewed by Paul McGowan where they discuss the changes between the models and it would seem that when Ted designed the original DirectStream DAC, some of the components he wanted to use were almost at the limits of his design requirements and they have been replaced in the Mk II version by updated components with better specs, like the Field Programmable Gate Arrays. In addition, noise and jitter issues seem to have been further reduced with better power supplies etc. I'm still very pleased with the model I have but I would have bought this newer version had it been available at the time. I have an Oppo bdp95 and a Sony UBP-X800, both support SACD and have hdmi outs. My hope was to be able to connect them to my Psaudio Nuwave DSD DAC via the i2s port. I ordered the hdmi to i2s converter from Ebay and received it yesterday. I hooked it into the system and configured both players to play the stereo SACD layer and pass DSD through hdmi. Good news, it worked except for one thing. When I select the i2s input on the DAC it plays seemingly normally but the DSD light doesn't turn on. When I view the TV monitor when a track is playing the Oppo reports that the audio is playing 2 channel SACD DSD. The Sony reports SACD DSD 2 channel 2.8MHz/1bit so it would seem that both plays are passing SACD DSD correctly. I'm going to try some better 8k hdmi cables to see if they fix the dsd light issue, if not I'll live with it as is and have a better set of cables and an outboard DAC that can play SACDS. Thank you Michael for bring this valuable information to your channel, nicely done.

Thanks for this video. Have you tried using your Oppo to copy SACDs using a program from Sonore to a hard drive ? Unfortunately the Ayre doesn't have a I2S input so I'm not sure how I could feed the Oppo direct into the Ayre. BTW, I will also check out the Dvorak Slavonic Dances SACD on Esoteric. That is really the best way to do it, because it allows you to stop putting wear and tear on the aging disc player. Once the SACD data is ripped to a file format (typically DSF), it can be played by any number of music streamer/software/DAC combinations and the disc can be safely stored away for archival purposes. Usually that would be a via USB connection between DAC and streamer, however some DACs can take DoP over SPDIF.

I still have two questions for you, if you don't mind: (1) Does the Oppo send raw DSD out through the HDMI output, and (2) If so, how does the decoder box get around copy protection? For many years, we were told that only SONY made the decoding chips and required licensing fees for third party implementations. Thanks!

No idea about the ins and outs of the copy protection. The player is not sending pure dsd through the hdmi output from what I understand, it's sending dsd attached to video, which the box is then separating as far as I can tell. My DAC recognizes the i2s signal as raw DSD, so its not converting to pcm.

Hi, I have been following your RU-vid videos since you started showing your vinyl finds a few years ago, really enjoy them. I am a long term vinyl collector of classical music. For this topic, please help me: 1) In your setup, you use your Oppo 105D as a transport thru the extractor box to your Denafrips Pontus II, if I just use an inexpensive Sony DVD/SACD player, i.e. UBP- x700 thru its HDMI audio output via the extractor box to the Denafrips, will I get the same quality sound? Or I have to use an expensive player like Oppo 105D or alike? 2) Understand that a 3rd part DAC is needed for better sound quality, but with your setup, there are too many external connections that may cause data loss. If I just invest on a higher end SACD player, i.e. Esoteric brand, will I get the similar sound quality as the Denafrips Pontus II? I appreciate your enlightening. John - Minneapolis, MN
@poetryonplastic
@poetryonplastic 2 года назад
Hi John, to the first part of your question: From what I've been able to understand, if you can run HDMI out from an SACD player, if you use one of these convertor boxes, you will have a DSD signal going out the other end. However, every I2S input on different DACs use a different pinout configuration, this means that you may need to change the pinout configuration on your DAC to achive proper sound (it could be out of phase, or perhaps channel-swapped), I2S is not standardized so each DAC is a little different in how they deal with it. That being said, if you have an I2S enabled DAC that allows you to change pinout config, you have a DAC that will work for playing SACDs/DSD files over HDMI. 2. Esoteric make first rate SACD players, but I have no idea how they compare as I've only ever heard one once at a show. In general, usually standalone DACs tend to sound better than integrated ones. I'm not really worried about any loss in the signal chain as the gains from an external DAC are very big, especially over my Oppo's internal DAC. Esoteric may be another level though, you may have to step up to the Terminator to better the DAC in an Esoteric unit. Metronome also make a world-class integrated DAC/CD/SACD player called the AQWO that I will be reviewing this summer. If you are looking to buy your last ever digital unit, and want everything in one box, that's what I would take a look at.

The loudest I usually play my Magnepans is - 17dB at my preamp with the ACS10. From the Oppo - Holo combination, - 35dB and I'm worried about wreaking my speakers. Sound wise, this combination runs rings around the ACS10. I have not had much time to compare the XLR direct to preamp versus the i2s but what was immediately noticeable was the highs were less sibilant and less fatiguing. One drawback this setup has is that my system is integrated with my home theatre and having a HDMI cable connected to the Audio out on the Oppo over rides the multi channel audio going to the AVR and comes out in stereo through the Holo. I have not been able to fix this in the Oppo setup preferences. The only way to fix this is to physically unplug the second HDMI. Luckily I've been hesitating selling my Oppo BDP103D that was replaced by the 205 and am now using it as a dedicated SACD transport with identical results. My next project is to convert the USB output of the ACS10 to i2s with a Sonore Ultradigital converter but this little magic box costs 10x more than the Aliexpress box.

interesting thing is that dac is an R2R ladder dac, fundamentaly incapable of converting DSD, so at some point along the way that DSD is being converted to PCM for the dac to be able to do anythign with it...

While ladder DACs that can decode DSD are rare, the Denafrips actually decodes native DSD. its not being converted to PCM or using D2P/DoP.

Wow, this was 2 years ago? I only just found out about this, but Oppo SACD players are extinct and I had never heard of them before apart from their smartphones. Instead, I have been using Denon for SACD, other brands include Marantz and Esoteric which is more high end, however none of them have HDMI out.

I have the Oppo BDP-83, and the Denafrips Iris DDC and the Ares II DAC... I was looking at these boxes, the I2s version. Both of my Denafrips boxes will accept DSD over coax, will this box send the DSD signal via HDMI to that particular box and output DSD over coax to the Iris or Ares II? Pontus II is on my list, currently they are on backorder.

I don’t think so because coax/toslink connections cannot transmit dsd as far as I’m aware.

@@poetryonplastic Look around for a box that'll output DoP on coax, I believe they exist. Also DSD can be done over COAX, but it's rare and very few DACs indeed will accept it. If your DAC can accept DSD over Coax (possible) then an HDMI->Coax extractor may work - just need to set the EDIS (?) switches correctly on the box. At worst you can output your DSD from your OPPO as 24/88.2 over HDMI and convert that to Coax, that'll work for sure, those boxes exist for sure.

@@nacarp2000 I spent a few bucks for the GeerFab digital breakout box. The GF box is in-between my Oppo and Ares II DAC. HDMI out of the Oppo to the GF box, digital coax out to the DAC, which is sending the full DSD signal.

Oppo bdp-105d -$1,449.00 / Denafrips Pontus ii $2,449.00 / little i2s box $60 TOTAL : $3958 Seems a little expensive just to listen to one sacd that i own !
@poetryonplastic

You don't need an outboard DAC to listen to sacds, you can just listen to them on your sacd player, this video is for people who have already invested in a high end DAC and want to play their sacds through it. Further, the price of the Denafrips Pontus II is $1750 usd, you are quoting the singapore dollars number.
