@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 If I’m not mistaken, the Nats’ offer to Harper had a LOT of deferred money, whereas the Phillies’ deal was straight-up. The Nats are all about deferred money, which is why they’ll be paying Max Scherzer _et al_ for years to come. Harper did turn down a shorter, much higher AAV deal from the Dodgers (4 years, $160mm I think), and he would’ve come out considerably further ahead had he accepted it, but-if the reporting is true-he wanted a place to put down roots and finish his career, which apparently is also why he wasn’t interested in an opt-out clause.
In June 2014 the Astros signed First baseman prospect Jon Singleton to a 5 yr $10 million that he could earn up to $35 Million before playing a single MLB game. He hasn't played in the majors since 2015 having played in the minors and Mexico since then. A number of MLB players including pitcher Bud Norris at the time criticized him for doing that saying he could potentially earn a lot more however considering he hasn't played in the the majors since, it seems he had the last laugh.
people playing sports to get paid and not to win dont deserve any paychecks at all. professional sports and players arent remotely special because of what they get paid. paychecks dont make anyone matter.
I'd love an opposite series to this one, players who didn't bet on themselves. Jon Singleton would be someone who didn't bet on themselves and won, while Ozzie Albies would be someone who didn't bet on themselves and lost.
Bonilla wasn't betting on himself his was just great negotiating by asking and getting deferres money. .it's actually more common than u might think. Alot of athletes have differed money for 10 to 15 years
Yea still blows my mind he turned that down…with investments, endorsements and simple merchandise sales (if he threw that in as part of the deal) he could be a billionaire over 15 years. Being in 1 city for a long time is worth a lot.
@@bobs8005 ever wonder that maybe someone hates a city and why would you want to be forced to live their for 15 years minimum when you could sign somewhere that will bring you happiness and you will still make enough money to do whatever you want in life
@@lilchipo6212 how could he hate a city that loved him, made him a champion and would make him half a billionaire at least. Lets be honest he is going to lose on that bet.
Great content, been watching these videos all day (don't tell my boss). I finally subscribed after the Pitch Meeting reference though. Don't know how you fit it in, but made it seem super easy, barely an inconvenience.
when you’re already worth tens to hundreds of millions I’d argue that being in the right market is more valuable than the extra 3-5 million a year. At some point the money isn’t super relevant and you’re playing for legacy and championships, or not in the case of Pujols and Machado…
So I'm not exactly in the same ballpark figures as these guys, but last year I turned down $100k/year job offer and decided to start my own business instead. I'm eight months into it and there's no doubt about it that betting on myself has paid off so far!
@@deadx1538 Thanks! I loved my old boss too, and I even still work for him as a consultant. Leaving on good terms and having good business relationships was huge. Being able to mow the lawn on a Wednesday afternoon, because it's going to rain on Saturday or going on four weeks vacation instead of three, because I don't have an employee handbook dictating how much time off I get are just two of many examples of how being your own boss is life changing!
I truly believe Juan Soto will regret not taking that deal, his numbers are average, and his numbers don't stand out unless he has monster years the next 3 years he won't get anything near that..
Brand new sub here and right off the bat I see a huge glaring error in this channel. RU-vid did you dirty and moved the decimal point over 2 spots to the left. Channel SHOULD show 483k subs not 4.83k subs. Great stuff dude you’ll get back there in time. Appreciate your channel.
My question is how do the teams determine if the big contracts are worth it? What are the metrics to determine if the deal was good for the ball club. I know you got merchandise, tickets, sponsorships and TV deals. I would love to get a deep dive on player contract metrics.
@@ghostlover951 He put up 5.6 WAR this year. That is most definitely not average. Injuries and regression can happen, but as it stands right now he would still get a deal of that size.
@Greenkeeper132 let's see, he had 500 plus at-bats, 244 avg, 27 Hr, and 62 RBI... you don't think that's average, I can name you 100 players with the same numbers or better... and you consider those numbers average... if you were an owner, you would give him a 300 plus contract with those numbers?
@@ghostlover951 RBI is a worthless stat, especially when he played two thirds of the season with the National with no runners in on base. You're also conveniently ignoring his .401 OBP. His OPS+ on the year was 149 which makes him 49% better than the the average hitter in baseball this year. He also played above average defense in RF this year. In total 5.6 WAR puts him firmly in the above the average all-star let alone the average MLB player as a whole. League average OPS was .706, his was .849. Calling him average is straight up delusional.
Wait the Pujols deal was more money but a lower AAV…and he would have been in the argument as the GOAT if he stayed out of Anaheim where careers go to die, just ask Anthony Rendon, if you can find him… Mike trout would have 130 WAR already, Shohei would be a 3 time Cy young and MVP winner if they were anywhere else.
Some context on that offer, A-Rod repeatedly told the team publicly he wanted to take a hometown discount and be a Mariner for life. He's a liar and he is not welcome in the city of Seattle the only player hated as much by Seattle is Jose Altuve.
This doesn't exactly fit your methodology, but Dexter Fowler is also a good example of this. Turns down a $30 Million deal from Baltimore to come back and play for the Cubs in 2016, then signs with the Cardinals after the season for over $80 Million. AND he won a ring.
The Harper one still baffles me. Not a fan of either team, but he took less per year to leave (More overall). He must have really wanted out of there???
On the Manny Machado Orioles offer you left out that Manny's 2014 ended with his second severe knee injury in the same calendar year. Similar to the circumstances that led to the Ozzie Albies deal
It’s amazing how out of all the big sports leagues in the US the one determined by team play more then an individual player is the one with some of the most expensive contracts. Ik it’s mainly due to there being no salary cap and revenue sharing. But Jesus baseball should be the sport with the smallest contracts. A QB can carry you to the playoffs. A good small forward can win you a championship. But one pitcher isn’t going to do anything. They play once a week that’s it. Pitching wins championships not pitchers. You need a solid rotation with at least two aces and some solid back up. And you need a lights out bullpen. Then not to mention you need at stacked line up, bc luck does come into play in baseball, a great pitcher can give up runs. One or two good batters won’t do anything. 9 guys have to hit. I mean I love baseball, but these guys should be getting paid this amount, considering how crucial it is to have solid players all around the field. This will actually back fire on the players, sure they’re being in a lot of money now. But owners will eventually realize it’s just not worth it to spend that kind of money on one guy. Then the players are fucked, expecting big contracts and no one will be interested.
Bobby Bonilla, Bobby Bonilla, Bobby Bonilla, Bobby Bonilla that contract with the Mets I think he is still getting paid until like 2050 or something...... Talk about playing the long game and winning. I thought the Yankees were nuts to extend A-rod again for 200 million. Jeter I understand A-Rod not really.
That’s why it would shock me if deGrom went to Texas. He’s got 6-8 years left if he’s lucky and I don’t see Texas breaking through in that time. I see him getting an AAV of 40-45 for 4-6 years with club options out to 8.
I will forever be annoyed that RU-vid doesn't allow edits to mistakes, especially a mistake I've been aware of for over a half year. Checkout the pinned comment on the video.
You should redo these videos yearly and find the people who did it in the most reason seasons. Then do one big one ever 5-10 years and update your initial results or not, and you can explain why agents might be better or worse now if the results aren't what you might think.
If your somebody that doesn't have 5 or 10 million in the bank It is so risky to not take these lower contracts. Say you get a 5 year 100 mil offer. Yeah you might lose and be able to get 200 million if you wait 2 or 3 years but if your wrong you could be running a hotdog cart and need to work the rest of your life to scrape by. I like betting on yourself but the difference between 100 vs 200 million is very small and allow you to live the same life vs 500k vs 64 million a year. Just saying anything can happen and you can get hurt and be done forever in sports. Maybe players have ensurance they can by were if they are out of mlb they can collect to allow them the risk of waiting but I think Machado in particular should have extended a few years sense he was making the minimum. Sure it worked out for him but many times it doesn't.
Pujols wife said cardinals first offered 5 years but then offered 10 years for 200 million.. Not 8 years 200 million. That would make sense cuz 8 years 200 million is the same amount as his angels 10 years contract which means he woulda stayed in st. Louis. Get ur facts staraight.
Saying Betts was a win, is rather misleading, as with a few others. The extra years after the initial deal, don't really matter. If Betts took the initial five year deal, he would've made more, and then, he would've gotten a fat contract that would've given him that extra money, as well. So really, he lost.
@@BaseballsNotDead Think it was a pretty cool way to avoid blowing all his $ like countless many do. Almost built in discipline. Thats a good bet 'for' 1s self. But was just asking. -U10
I don't know if I would exactly say Pujols won that. Yes it's 40 more million in total, but it's also 2 years longer so it's actually less per season. He still had enough pop after that 8 years was up that he likely would have gotten a good deal to finish out his career with the Cards, but it was really in those last couple seasons his production dropped off.
His OPS+s from 2012 through 2019: 138 116 126 118 113 80 91 92 There is no way he get anywhere NEAR 30 million for 2020-2021. That 2.5 mil deal for 2022 was pretty much as good as he could have hoped for. And if he hadn't been traded to the Dodgers and shown that he still had platoon value for a decent team, he may not have gotten even 1.5 mil
though he is the greatest 3rd baseman in history (sorry, Brooks), im so glad Girly Gachado has been banished to the Padres. youd think it would be difficult to supplant A-hole-Rod as the most hated man in Baseball... but Girly did it with ease. he is Sand Diegos trouble now....
