John Kruk’s character isn’t killed by DeNiro in the fan. It was the teammate that wears 11 because that’s Bobby Rayburns number until he gets to the Giants. Kruk’s character chides Bobby after Juan is murdered and points to the 11 patch on his sleeve and says “now we all get to wear the number”.
You're mixing up two scenes. Kruk is stabbed in the final scene when it's pouring rain and DeNiro is in the umps gear. It's dark in that scene so it can be tough to see, but DeNiro stabs Kruk as Kruk runs at him and then goes down.
Bobby Bonilla may not make the list based on your criteria, but his deals with the Mets and Orioles, where his salary was deferred and he was getting paid over a mil per year after he retired. His Mets deferment was meant to go until 2035, though I'm not sure if it's still in effect.
You're mixing up deals. Bonilla signed a free agent deal with the Mets and was traded to the Orioles partway through that, but none of that contract was deferred. He then signed a free agent deal with the Marlins, was traded to the Mets, and the Mets deferred the last year of THAT deal.
The Steelers one is actually very intresting becuase pouncy is kinda an odd player. He’s kinda the Derek jeter can’t field of football. He benefited massively from expectation. Why is he a good center becuase Pittsburgh drafts great o-line man. Therefore he won a lot of media voted awards becuase who the fuck watches o-line? But as we got more analytics his legacy has become a bit more murky. Often times it’s a bit less dire as some of them say but other equally valuable centers on less high profile teams finally got their dues. There is a really solid chance he’s not a potential hofer if he even played 2 years later. We can debate how accurate those analytics are when it comes to his performance but I think it’s undeniable that many of the voters for the awards you listed are significantly more informed now than they were.
There´s hope at least some kids and fainbois learn something here: The players dont play for "the love of the game", nor do they care about them (fainbois/kids). The players are only concerned about how to strike for more money every year, how to cheat (roids, throwing games, doctoring bats and balls, etc). The greed is on the same level as of the owners. And before some "smart" guy, worshipping the players comes around: No, the money for this insane salaries isnt in the matket. If it would be true, taxpayers would not have to fund stadiums, pro sports would never gone to bed with gambling, corruption wouldnt drive MLB, TV brodcasters (and teams like the Dodgers) wouldnt go bankrupt (the result being the taxpayers coming up for the open debts, yet again). I am glad to be out of it since 1994. The last year I spent a coin on them. But I love the stories around the game. Great vid. Baseball´s Dead. P.S.: Peter Uberroth was the greatest comish ever, and telling the cold hard truth ("some owners are really dumb"). Heck, he even saved Olympics.
I wish the movie would have reflected more of the reality of the moment instead of going for an adversarial take. I really would have liked to see how Art Howe accepted this and how the interactions were more genuinely from the team. As others have noted this team was loaded with talent and you have to be to win 20 in a row(especially strong starting pitching) and a 100 win season. The fact that some of the important pieces rejected the way they were portrayed distracts from the movie IMO
Cincinnati Red Joe Nuxhall was the youngest player ever to appear in a Major League game, pitching 2⁄3 of an inning for the Reds on June 10, 1944, at the age of 15 years. He did not pitch again in the majors until 1952.
The original 1951 Angels in the Outfield is a sweet little comedy starring Paul Douglas and Janet Leigh about the Hapless Pittsburgh Pirates. It was U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's favorite movie. The Angels are never shown. It has members of the Pirates in the movie and 15% owner Bing Crosby is interviewed about his team's change of fortune. Ty Cobb also makes an appearance. it is nothing like the awful and barely watchable Disney version.
The Babe sucks big time. It is so bad It makes the former Yankee bat boy William Bendix buffoonish The Babe Ruth Story movie look good. The movie Cobb also sucks big time and is chock full of lies based on a book written by a forger and defrauder. His books have been have been discredited and he made things up about Cobb. The movie was a also a flop like The Babe.
why are contracts from the 80s given values of over 100m? are you using the same $/war value for all the extensions? shouldnt the $/war value be adjusted per year / decade / era ?
"why are contracts from the 80s given values of over 100m?" Because they're adjusted for inflation and era. "shouldnt the $/war value be adjusted per year / decade / era ?" See above.
New Ball players today are not even interesting, they celebrate in the guys face instead of just going to work like the old school players, you never saw Mantle flip his bat unless it was out of disgust, the game today is too hyped, too expensive and boring been to game and not spent 300 bucks? It's ridiculous, won't watch anymore "modern" baseball the game has been ruined just into nostalgia and old teams now take in an amateur game screw the MLB, the owners still collude today, how else could the best pitcher in the game t6oday get ignored by all of MLB Trevor Bauer
When Willie Randolph and Craig Biggio have almost identical WAR and therefore were the same guy, WAR sucks. I saw Willie Randolph’s entire career. I saw Craig Biggio’s entire career. Not the same. Sabermetrics is everything that’s been wrong with baseball in the last 25 years. There I said it. How do you like me now ?
29:58 Scales potentially being pinch hit for (and his subsequent HR) were set up with a couple of scenes. O’Farrell first threatens him with going back to Triple-A if he doesn’t start hitting. Then after he pops out to end the game against the Tigers because Billy thought he had great power to the gaps, Corning says that of course he likes Billy because he’s the only person in the world who thinks he can hit 😂😂.
Globalists: Anyhow, soccer is seen as an international sport and would be promoted and the traditional sport of American baseball would be de-emphasized and possibly eliminated because it might be seen as too American. And he discussed eliminating this. one's first reaction would be - well, they pay the players poorly and they don't want to play for poor pay so they give up baseball and go into some other sport or some other activity. But he said that's really not how it works. Actually, the way to break down baseball would be to make the salaries go very high. The idea behind this was that as the salaries got ridiculously high there would be a certain amount of discontent and antagonism as people resented the athletes being paid so much, and the athletes would begin more and more to resent among themselves what other players were paid and would tend to abandon the sport. And these high salaries also could break the owners and alienate the fans. - From: New Order of Barbarians
16:25 As someone who’s done pro sound design, I’m thinking the decision to throw distortion all over the crowd was probably a really dumb but intentional artistic choice. Like “ooh this is what the crowd sounds like to Wesley Snipes because he’s scaaared of DeNiiiiro!” It just added one more layer of noise, though. I’ll say this about Tony Scott: the guy never half-assed his half-assed ideas.
You should redo these videos yearly and find the people who did it in the most reason seasons. Then do one big one ever 5-10 years and update your initial results or not, and you can explain why agents might be better or worse now if the results aren't what you might think.
Well this is why I only watch college ball to many over payed cry baby's the money has destroyed all pro sports just look at the NBA its all gone to shit baseball is right behind them I have not watched no pro sports since the kneeling and disrespectful to the reel heroes that gave their life so these over payed cry baby's can play ball and pitch about this
I politely disagree with your assessment of Eight Men Out. I loved watching the baseball scenes and the ragtime didn’t bother me. Certainly deserved to be top 20.
Out of all the records here, I think shutouts could theoretically be broken. But they would to put up some monster seasons and also have 100% buy-in from the manager and team
I take the side of the owners. You’re “paid” to play baseball… keep your mouth shut and take what you are given. “ the love of money is the root of all evil” that works both ways… the players are just as bad and greedy now as the owners… baseball is a great game but that’s all it is just a “game”…. Both owners and players need to grow up….
Short summary view: The MLBPA is undoubtedly the victors of the last half-century or so. However, the last 20 years have seen the owners get smarter and the MLBPA become more complacent it seems. Still, MLBPA is getting some of what they want and the owners are still raking in the revenue. Things could continue to turn though, if the owners push even harder at the end of 2026.
Why on Earth did you think modern demographics could explain the Wichita joke? In the 1990 census the county Wichita is in had a 4.3% Hispanic population, 0.1 Cuban in particular. I have no idea why you thought shit 30 years after the show aired would reflect what it was then.
