I'm thinking a non-porous fretboard service might me better for clean tones on fretless. Maple neck maybe? Or some hard seal over the rosewood? Vigier uses metal fretboards. And, BTW, do you still call it a fretboard on a fretless guitar?

I'm amazed by your creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to bring back this guitar to playing form. You have so many nice Fenders that no matter how much you'd upgrade this one, it would still feel like the cheapest Squier available. The idea of attempting things you wouldn't normally do to achieve a really cool and unique instrument in the end was very clever, and the result says it all!

BenFr PK On a normal guitar, the metal of the fret stop the string from scratching the fingerboard. On a fretless there is nothing protecting the fretboard. Too much bending = wrecked fretboard

John Frusciante had a fretless strat. It was a early 60's, I wanna say '62, and when he bought it the frets were terrible. He had the frets redone but he hated the job the tech did, so he just had someone make it a fretless strat. He plays it on the solo to Mellowship Slinky in B Major.

thnx for sharing this series! It sounds way better then I'd expect or from what I heard people tell (about i.e. the lack of sustain). One tip for the playing: if you adopt a more classical left hand style (fingers parallel to the fret-lines) also on the high notes it will get easier to switch strings without loosing the tuning. The fingering of the low notes is fine but take it up to the high strings (just lower the left wrist).. I used to play in this type of angle too for a long time, but playing in a straight-angle will free up strength in hammer-ons and pull-offs aswell (something that is already very difficult to 'get right' on a fretless). Well thanks again! will definitely rid some old guitar of its frets someday!

I don't know if this has been covered but a an advice from a fellow fretlessboy: sand down/cut the nut as much as possible, with there being no frets you can basically sand it down till it barely touches the fretboard (and even if it does you have a slight sitar-ish buzz). makes playing so much easier and sustains a lot more. Also i think slide is not suited tootoo much for fretless if it's the mellow wooden tone you're after. but that's just my 2 cents. great playing and great mods!

Mod a squire strat with clear scratch plate front and back, do some 920d cloth wiring and paint the cavity black , no covers on the 65 vintage pickups so you see the coil wire threw the scratch plate and the trem system in back. I think its cool to see threw to all the working's. love your show.

It must be really difficult to play chords without the frets. I know my fingers would have a hard time staying right on the lines if I was playing a 4 fingered chord.
@TJJJJJJJJJJJ
@TJJJJJJJJJJJ 6 лет назад
DesertScorpionKSA it’s surprisingly not as hard as it appears, muscle memory is fairly dam accurate, it’s the subtle changes in tone that throw you off
@acoffeewithsatan
@acoffeewithsatan 6 лет назад
In fact, I'd say it's a lot easier than to play chords on a scalloped neck guitar. you can still see where the frets were based on the filler, plus as T J said, if you know the chord you're playing, your fingers will go right into the proper place. My friend that plays double bass at my musical group has a lot harder time, he's a bassist but not only the instrument is played upright instead, it also has a much bulkier neck and no fret markings whatsoever.
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 6 лет назад
Usually fretless instrument players, including violinists and cellists, try not to play more than two notes at a time. Its really hard to adjust intonation of more than two on the fly. Also the more notes you have going at once the more small intonation errors may stand out vs other notes in the chord you're playing.
@TJJJJJJJJJJJ
@TJJJJJJJJJJJ 6 лет назад
jgrossma isn’t the reason for that on violins etc due to the curve of the neck ?
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 6 лет назад
Its physically difficult to play more than two notes at once due to the bow. You "can" play three, but its tough. I don't play violin, but my understanding is that what violinists will do for three or four note chords is to play them in a quick arpeggio so they all sound together at least a little bit. (Eg the opening chords of Bachs famous Chaconne in Dm) But thats why a violin is a violin and a guitar is a guitar. They do different things!

Maybe you should do a "real" build for a fretless. One with a good neck, pickups, etc. I think this thing turned out pretty neat!
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 6 лет назад
Why wasn't that a "real" build? He levelled and smoothed the board; fretwork is a complete non issue here. I think it turned out about as well as any other build likely would. I think pickups are fine, but those are easy to swap, if necessary.
@KleyDeJong
@KleyDeJong 6 лет назад
Really interesting how the lack of frets really changes the attack of the note.
@jgrossma
@jgrossma 6 лет назад
Yes, that's part of the reason people plays these, to get that tone. Part is due to the flatwound strings. Most is due to a small amount of buzz of the string against the fretboard. The fretless bass players call this "mwah" and its part of the characteristic sound of fretless guitar like instruments.
