B-man - The opening is not the issue, so I wouldn't think about changing that up. My recommendation would be to switch to 10+5 or better yet 15+10. That would give you more time to think. You also do what I have fallen into and am trying to climb out, which is only thinking about what I am doing and not spending adequate time thinking about what my opponent wants to do. That is why I am susceptible to forks and uneven exchanges. Keep fighting through it - at this point it's just a mindset thing - I know, I'm there too.
If you want to try some more openings, try playing Ruy Lopez, Colle, or Catalan systems. I play them a lot with white and find a great success with them. I also like the Slav defense but it's a tad bit more complicated from a positional standpoint with black.
@Blunder_Man Play the Catalan with D4 then, one of my favorite openings. If you like the sicilian, learn the najdorf. If you wanna learn a setup with black that has less control for the center but quick development, Grunfeld is a great one. Analyze some of MVLs games for these.
