I heard this golf course had been impacted by the Melbourne tunnel project, so I went down for a look. As you know, I’m playing every golf course in Melbourne Australia, and today I played some city golf at West Gate Golf Club. If you can recommend a good course for me, comment it below and I’ll play the one with the most likes or mentions.
Well, Hole 1 is definitely impacted by the project, because of this big lump of concrete in front of me. This area in general was giving me cyberpunk / blade runner kind of vibes. It’s a Par 104m and I hit my pitching wedge straight over the back. I was up against the fencing so I hit a little ‘Thai spinner back at the flag and nearly holed out. I tapped in a par and I’m thinking that’s wedge play I’ll be looking to utilising more in the future.
The walk to Hole 2 takes you under the tunnel and I really didn’t know what to expect on the other side. I kind of though this course was going to be a pitch and putt so I was pleasantly surprised to see wide open fairways and Par 4’s. Hole 2 was a 310m Par 4 and I hit a 7-iron because there was a water hazard at driver distance. And I hit it again towards the green. I hit a chip at the flag and holed out a 10ft par putt.
Hole 3 is a 304m Par 4 back towards the motorway. My drive hit a tree and bounced back into play. I pushed my 4-iron to the right which left me between a bunker and the green. My chip was safe albeit a little long and l had a long putt to save par. It went close and I tapped in a bogey.
Hole 4 is a 350m Par 4. I went with a 4-iron off the tee, so I would be short of the water and then hit a 5-iron towards the flag. It was a bit long and I had to chip it back towards the hole. It was a decent chip and left me with a chance to save par. I misread the line and it veered left. Leaving me with another bogey.
Hole 5 is a dog-leg-right Par 3, with the flag hidden behind the trees. I try to go over the trees, but I draw it to the right, and I really need to learn how to hit a fade shot. I chip it back towards the green, catching a few trees leaves along the way, which slows it up. I have a putt for par but again it doesn’t fall and I take another bogey.
Hole 6 is a drivable Par 4 232 m. I push my drive slight right and it doesn’t reach the green. My chip hits the green but doesn’t spin and it rolls to the fringes at the back. I have a long putt for birdie which gets me close. I nearly get hit by a stray ball here, but I stay calm and slot the par putt.
Hole 7 is a Par 3 127m. I push my 8-iron right and I have a difficult chip towards the raised green. It bounces over the back and I have to chip it back where it came from. If ever I wanted to hole out a chip this, was it. A bit more juice and it would have fallen. I tap in another bogey.
Hole 8 is a Par 4 324m. I hit a low drive and it went to the left of the fairway. My second shot clipped a low hanging tree branch and it progresses about 20m. Still put out by this I didn’t catch my third shot correctly at all and it came up short of the green. I chipped it from here and it went close to hole. It left me with a tap-in bogey.
Back under the bridge, I went in search of Hole 9. I found it and it seems like this is a temporary tee box situation here as well. 85m is normally full sand wedge distance for me, but I comes up short and I have a longish chip at the green. It rolls over the back and I have to chip back where it come from. Thankfully it goes close and I take another bogey.
Today I had 6 bogeys and 3 pars, shooting 38 on a Par 32 9-hole course. I had a really good experience here today and I am excited to see what they will do with the course once the tunnel project is finished. I imagine they will incorporate the space under the bridge into the 1st and 9th Holes and this could make for a really unique experience. On thing I noticed was that this is an really well watered course and the grounds staff have done a really good job at keeping the greens and fairways and tee boxes in great condition.
So if you made it this far, give the page a follow and if you can recommend another course for me to play; comments it below and I will play it. See you next time.
