This is one of my all time favorite topics to teach. I have recently found a Jochen Ruckert video where he demonstrates many ways for drummers to play in 2, Tony Williams plays in 4 in some recordings for example, and so on. I have found that many drummers do the same thing over 2 and get stuck in the same trap I did as well, thank you for this lesson!

We had several tunes in our rehearsal band book this summer that I kept my ears open to the bass player as he would shift in and out of 2 and 4 feels (a lot more of them this year than in seasons past). Since these weren't performance tunes I relied on simply listening to him so we could weave it in and out. But if we were doing any of these on a gig I thought I might check the bass chart first to see if our arranger had put something in to show where he wanted a 2 feel (he's kind of notorious for being minimal on drum charts), talking it out with the bass player or just doing the natural thing and learn what his tendencies are. I was beginning to pick up on a few things he leans to, particularly in some of the vocal tunes. Sad that we're now on winter hiatus till May. We already have a few 2022 gigs booked so hopefully, we can get a handle on covid and get out more. It'll be interesting to see what the repertoire will be since the arranger works on new stuff all winter. Obscure old standards to challenging newer stuff. Yeah, it's definitely fun stuff.
