What must leaders in education instill in those they mentor? As we step into an increasingly complex future, we need new models of teaching and discovery. Evan Mazunik talks about (and demonstrates) some of the most vital skills students need to survive and thrive in the 21st century. Evan Mazunik creates contemporary music as a composer, pianist, director, and educator in Denver, CO. Despite starting piano lessons as a near-sighted 4-year-old with stage fright, Evan has discovered the joy of music through improvisation. He conducts ensembles to play off the page using a sign language for real time composition.
As a performer, he has played at creative music venues in NYC and Denver such as Dazzle, Roulette, and The Stone. As a composer, his commissions have included works for jazz band, choir, and various solo instruments, as well as interdisciplinary works for theater, dance, and film. As an educator, he has led master classes and workshops at the New School, MSU Denver, University of Indiana, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and many others, both as a soloist and in collaboration with other teaching artists. Evan received a Bachelors degree in piano performance and a Masters in jazz studies from the University of Iowa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I love the comparison of CREATIVITY to an ADVENTURE -- it reminds of the tingles of excitement when I would allow my students for more autonomous behaviour. Sure, it would mess up the original lesson plan, but it would usually be a class to remember: the unexpected outcomes, the element of surprise and the numerous humorous episodes... Worth every minute for both me and my students.

Evan!! Long time no see, old friend! So wonderful to see this. Your words have so much power and articulate so many things I think about everyday. These ideas are absolutely vital for the continued evolution of human experience. Your are living proof that these ideas work! To see your evolution as a human, artist, and educator over all these years is an inspiration. Keep it up! And you are just getting started, I think :)

A conceptual mind thought…”I can split the atom”. Another said, “I can make a giant bomb”. Now we ALL can conceive of blowing up the planet 30 times over. And this guy thinks that conceptual thinking can be trusted? I’m sure that an ABomb makes beautiful music!
@sirsanti8408
@sirsanti8408 2 года назад
But another said “we could use this to easily power the world” and even another said “we could probably use this to propel rockets in space” new discoveries can be helpful or harmful, conceptual minds thought about the tools to use against those bombs as well as a path to putting them away

Sadly, another feel-good but not a new or easily actionable idea. We all already know how important enabling creativity is, and how it needs time and freedom. This talk provided nothing new and could have been delivered in 5 minutes..
