Very helpful - I never thought about playing scales "musically" - this makes a lot of sense since scales and arpeggios are such a big component of many pieces.

‘Playing quietly because we don’t really know what we’re doing’ - laughed out loud because this is me in lesson! Thank you Gareth. I’m really going to try to nail this. I think it will make them more enjoyable to practice too

I think it is a very good practice to play the left hand “P”, while playing the right hand crescendo to diminuendo and other variations. Then, reverse those actions of the right and left hands. Scale practice, arpeggio practice etc is a great vehicle to practice right left hand independence. And it makes, for me, more interesting.

It's essential for the teacher to have the ability to play the scales both major and minor as they have to teach that to the students whether they will take the accreditation exams or not!

Definitely true... I took my piano grade 3 in December 2022 with Abrsm and with my teacher we'd worked scales and arpeggios exactly like you suggest here. Btw, never played them in that way, new challenge for me. Well, not only did I get full mark in this part of the exam, but in the report the examiner acknowledged I'd played them with musical shape!!

I asked a question in a comment on another video and did my search and came across this video. I also say a video where Alex is also introduced. I should have known that you were working as a team since you have very good quality videos. Or as my daughters always say, boring like the music. My Mirth Is Audible. But they encourage to keep being boring. I consider myself as a pre-beginner for my keyboard skills. But I've been watcing Music Matters for over a year, and by osmosis I've developed some technical skills for an intermediate level player. Playing scales in thirds or sixths is also quite a challenge, and it sounds great. It's hard to coordinate the fingerings though, but that's part of the charm, n'est-ce pas?

Not in ‘classical’ exams but certainly in jazz exams and certainly as one way of working through scales

I think, like this we end up with performers that are taking listeners to journeys that composers never intended. Not sure if that’s always a good thing.

A performer, like an actor has their part to play. They’re not machines. Similarly, scales shouldn’t be played as if by an automaton.
