Funny enough I kept thinking, “I’ve played contra to death, I don’t remember the trees moving that like that.” Then I read your comment. 😆. So contra is on the list, NES Batman, Mario 3, Super C, gradius 3 and Mike Tyson’s punchout. I play each of these Atleast once a week. And I’ve owned them all for about 30 yrs minus gradius 3(didn’t get that till I was older)

Sadly today I rarely talk to my siblings, and it's been probably 2 decades since I heard from those childhood friends. Such is life.

Love to see it. I play fable 2 or 3 at least once a year. That’s my video game comfort food. Especially with the memories that come with it from when I played it in high school with my friends. I’m also going back to the fallout series, again because the tv show was fantastic. There’s one game that does bring guilt and that’s Fortnite. For years I tried to get my brother and spouse into it. One day she finally watched me playing it and wanted to try. Then we bother were addicted and we had good memories playing that together. Since then my brother and kids have also gotten into it. But since I’ve been playing it longer I feel pretty burnt out and don’t feel like playing it as much when they want me to play it with them. That or adult life gets in my way of playing with them, but that’s for my game time in general.

1. Eat candy 2. Wipe your butt 3. Beat Super Mario Bros. Well, kid me, two out of three ain't bad. (It was Mario, I never learned the maze of 8-4, even with the All Stars version giving audio clues.) And I'm much older and diabetic so I only retain one of those skills now. Maybe when I'm really old and lost motor control I can finally learn the last one to make up for the loss of the middle one.

I play to death any game where I can just screw around instead of having a fixed objective. Strategy games with scenario settings are great for this, whether I'm playing by myself in a single square map on Civ, or using an edited character file on Command & Conquer Red Alert with killer Einsteins. Likewise, open world games like the Saints Row series, where there are tons of things to do.

Good review! Hey, I respect your Ghouls 'n Ghosts achievement, RB! I beat Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts legitimately on my SNES years ago, so it definitely is a badge of honor to finish any games in that series! Yeah, there were less games to choose from as a kid between only owning one system and having a limited game collection, so replaying games never had a stigma attached to it. I do still get friends together from time to time now for pure couch gaming and it is just as fun as ever! Many of my current friends are retro game fans, too, so it adds to the enjoyment! I have replayed many NES, Genesis, SNES and N64 games multiple times. I'm actually revisiting many of my childhood favorites now on a random whim. I'm also now exploring "new" games I had never got the chance to play as a kid such as Castlevania III on the NES, Aladdin on Genesis, Chrono Trigger on SNES, and Rocket Robot on Wheels on the N64.

I have some favourite decade(s) old single player video games that I still play over and over again, because I love them and find them so enjoyable. The bad side of course is that you get to know everything about the game and it loses the ability to surprise you, and you then know exactly what is coming up next and how to beat it. But on the plus side, you start to set yourself challenges in the game, to make the game harder and to challenge yourself further. Challenges such as only using certain weapons, never using certain techniques, not allowing yourself to go to the next game level until you have found every secret and killed every enemy, not using in-game powerups, and so on. Replicability is very important to me. And yes, to me the best multiplayer experiences I have had are when I am playing against friends in the same room. All of the friendly trash-talking, seeing the frustration on the face of someone when you beat them, seeing their (good natured) gloating when they beat you, etc, it's so mucn better than playing online, especially when playing online against people you don't know. That said, I do like playing multiplayer first person shooters against bots, as long as the bots are capable, and have good definable options. (Good) bots play the game type you want to play, with the rule set that you choose, they play when you want to play, they don't cheat, they don't spout offensive/racist drivel, they don't log off when they are losing, they don't think it's "funny" to shoot their own team members, they play at the skill level you choose (so they aren't too hard or too easy for you to beat), and they do what you tell them, even boring things like defending the flag or staying where you put them. Sadly, many bots are not configurable, or are too stupid to play some game modes well, and bots overall are becoming less and less common in games, but when done well then they are very valuable additions to the game, and can even be used to pad out a game where only a few humans are playing in large levels or in game modes that need lots of players. Look at how many online games end up with only a few people still playing them, or even no one playing them any more, so you can no longer play that game on line. This is especially noticeable if you buy a game that's more than a few months (or years) old, and no one is playing the multiplayer, so you'll never get to play it. But if it had bots then it would be no problem. The other side of the coin is when an older game's multiplayer is populated by very good players, so that as a beginner you just repeatedly get annihilated. If there were bots then you could practice against the bots at whatever skill level you set those bots to play at. BTW, your videos are great - a little insane, but in the good way!

The way I see it, if you strongly want to replay or continue a certain game, then by all means, do it. But if you're picking a familiar title just out of habit or because you can't decide on something new, then I encourage you to push on through to at least *trying* a new game. There's so much out there and it can feel pretty bad if at the end of the night, you didn't 100% enjoy the time spent with the same-old game.

I think this video nicely sums up my previous-rant, wherein I raged about certain games and their "excessive hatred". It's so much easier for a child - with nothing better to do - to overlook such matters, than for an adult with many things better to try (including other games). I'm honestly not sure I'll ever understand how I once finished "Indiana Jones's Greatest Adventures" on the SNES long ago, even given ample time to burn, but I certainly don't quite have the patience anymore (especially not when many Retro and Modern games are both vastly more worth my time). However - as for games I've excessively played to death - I'm certainly ran through games like "Super Mario Land", "Megaman X", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II", "Star Fox 64", and "Chrono Trigger" nigh on endlessly. Finally - for what it's worth - I'm rather impressed you've played through "Ghouls and Ghosts" (Sega Genesis), it's undeniably a game I'd otherwise be afraid to engage with seriously (as in: all the way through).

I'm one of those people who likes completing a good majority of the games I play... but if there's a game I keep going back to, even _after_ 100% completing it... For me, that's a special game. Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Ys 8, Majora's Mask, Psychonauts, Donkey Kong Country, and even recent titles like Lies of P all fall into the special category for me - games I can play to death and still want to revisit no matter what 💙

I’m super impressed that you beat Ghouls ‘n Ghosts! My older brother beat Ghosts ‘n Goblins on the NES when we were kids. Even though I watched him do it, it’s still hard to believe as an adult. I wonder if the brown shag carpet remembers… Anyway, I love your channel!

It's been so long since you've brought up Rocket Knight Adventures that I was beginning to get concerned. I'm sitting here thinking "What's next; is he going to drop nanners for plantains now?" "What is this madness?" I'm glad to see you've come round. I just beat Contra last night for the first time in about a year or so and man am I glad I did. Next; I'm off to revisit Atomic Runner. One of my favorite games of all time that nobody really talks about. Those who know, know. Great video as always my friend.

I've played Final Fantasy 4 and Zelda: Link to the Past an unhealthy amount. I must have beat both of those 100% at least a hundred times or more in my life. Link to the Past I've done 100% with no deaths and no continues in one sitting, no save states or rewind. FF4 is worse lol, I've Leveled everyone to max level gotten all the secret summons and Adamant Armor on every character. Then again FF4 is my favorite game of all time so....plenty of other games I like but FF4 I've def played to death.

4:22 In full agreement there. When Super Smash Bros brawl came out March 9th 2008 my friends and I played it right there at launch into midnight into the next morning and one of the ways of unlocking Sonic is to play versus battles for 10 hours. We unlocked Sonic. I didn't even realize we had played the game for that log but we had locked them on day one because we couldn't stop playing.

I'd list the games I played to death as a kid, but if I had a game, 9/10 times I did play it to death, so it'd be easier to just list what I didn't play exhaustively instead at that point! Games I've played to death as an adult is a different story though. Those are *much* further and farther between. Those games are Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Enter the Gungeon, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Breath of the Wild! And there's one bonus game I'll throw out there, and it's an unusual case. There's a game that I've been anticipating for years, that I already know I'm going to play to death ahead of time! That game is Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, which is supposedly coming out in around half a month! Bet you couldn't tell I like racing games *just* a bit. ;) Great video as always!

I never got tired of playing Pokemon Gold/Crystal… Some of my all-time favorite games. Until I found out a couple years ago that the save file doesn’t last in the game for too long which ruins my urge to play them these days sadly but I should get over it and just get back to enjoying the experience. :/ …So I’d say my next favorite game that I never get tired of playing would have to be Sonic Adventure 2 Battle! One of the best games ever imo! :) Anyway, I love your videos! Been watching for quite a while now. :) Keep it up with the awesome videos I always look forward to them! ^_^

For me, the one that gets played to death the most from childhood to today would have to be Toejam & Earl. The randomized levels, the music, the art, just childhood in digital form. The slower pace also meant it was the only game I could ever get my grandma to play (she raised me) for any amount of time cause of arthritis in her hands. Who knew a Genesis 3-button would facilitate 30 years of fun.

Some modern games I play to death because there's a limited time to enjoy the full experience with the "live service" model the industry has adapted. This has really helped me appreciate retro games because the full experience is always available.

Of course these are games I played to death, where I know every line and enemy location. MegaMan 2 & 3, Super Mario World, Turtles in Time, Mega Man X, Street Fighter 2. I played Street Fighter Alpha 2 so much it scratched. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mega Man 8. Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold & Silver. GoldenEye64, Super Mario 64, Pokemon Stadium. Street Fighter Alpha 3, Resident Evil 2 & 3, Final Fantasy VII & VIII. Capcom vs SNK 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Final Fantasy X, Resident Rvil 4 unlocking the Handcannon, PLR, Chicago Typewriter on multiple systems. Street Fighter 4 was always "just one more game" and kept me outta trouble. Diablo 2 LoD & Resurected. Street Fighter 6 had over an 80+hour World Tour Mode if you go for Level 100, I honestly see myself replaying it in the future, on PC most likely. Multiplayer Shooters: Soldier of Fortune 2, Halo 2 on Xbox, CoD4 Modern Warfare, CoD Modern Warfare 2(2009), CoD Zombies(Waw, BO 1, 2, & 3). Rainbow Six Siege. Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield/Gold Edition is the GREATEST First Person Shooter ever made.

Games I play to Death. Super Mario Bros, Contra, Punch Out, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Shinobi. Mega Man 2 & Golden Axe. These are the same games I play over & over again. For Couch vs I used to play Golden Eye, Mario Kart 64 & NHL 94. These are the vs games I used to play all the time with friends. Growing up in the 80's & 90's games were very limited as I only owned 10 games per each generation cycle. Games were a lot harder to come by, my parents weren't into video games at all & I had no money as a kid. So the games I got as a kid on my birthday or Christmas were the only times I got games as a kid. As a kid I wasn't good at games either. I'm a lot better now with those games I mentioned because I can beat them easily now as an adult.

I feel like with the rise of speedrunning and randomizers this entire discussion has gotten more and more relatable to me. I can't tell you how many Final Fantasy, and Zelda games i've picked back up because of randomizers and can't tell you how many times i've replayed mario 64 and super metroid for speedrunning. I wanna play so many other games but randomizers especially are so addicted and the most fun i've had with single player games for years!
