Playing Video Games With Mind Control

The future is now - or so it seems. @perrikaryal is a gamer, Twitch streamer, psychology graduate and a genius with the ability to control games...with her mind! She has mastered the art of doing this with games like Elden Ring, Halo and TrackMania all without using a controller. To do this she uses an EEG (electroencephalogram) that picks up her brain activity, which then translates into pushing buttons on a virtual controller.
Is mind control the future of gaming?

This is propaganda. This is made to promote the idea that this technology should be used for everyone instead of just special use cases as it is now approved for. Such as people with disabilities. “Not being able to use this tech to hang out with yours friends online”, is not an “accessibly issue”. Please just stop with this crap @GreatBigStory. Fr. It's definitely amazing to be apart of the time where the gaming future is at least coming a bit into play, clearly. But still, I wish we were further along. The future is games we can control with our minds. Except we wouldn't be thinking of like "moving blocks" and such, but rather literally casting our "1st spell" and moving forward, moon walking, vaulting things, jumping ontop or over things, "equipping our second item", etc. And then after that, the future after that; games that we feel we are actually inside. This is propaganda to promote the approval of general use for these types mind tech interfaces. They are making this to support the idea that there is positive value for general population use. Which is very limited and heavily negated by the overwhelming negative effects on mental health and society. Under capitalism this will not be used the way many of you are thinking….Think more the way Social Media, and Search Engines went, not some future utopia for us all. Sorry to say this is going to be used for control and manipulation. At the moment there is only approval for special use in disabilities. And that’s how it needs to stay. That is the most powerful yet succinct way to phrase this that I have heard yet. I'm always reminded of people criticizing folx who struggle to afford their basic bills but won't sell their Xbox. Not even a newest model or anything. Like an original Xbox or 360 or whatever older-gen gaming system. That's not exclusive to older systems, but it's the most unreasonable idea, as if a one-time $30 now will do more for them long term than having the one simple stress relief they already own. Or even for buying one nice thing for themselves, like any hobby. That doesn't even cover all the other ways people need more than just being not dead. So, exactly as you put it.

This device is already available, from what I understood she applied programming knowledge to make it work in games. For disability... I think not so much. You can research PC Eye 5. They basically produce two eye tracking devices - One (Tobii eye tracker 5) is build for gamers and works only in games. PC eye 5 is build around general Windows usage, and is made for disabled people. So you can hope to get something similar that works in games (maybe for a limited camera control and such). Disabled people would need help with using the computer itself and here they would benefit the most. I speak from my experience, I have a condition that manifest similarly to what you mentioned.

@@carolyne803 With all due respect, you're wrong, it's like any other input device. The main challenge isn't setting up the code, it's practicing consistency with your inputs and training your mind to be able to do tasks effectively with the inputs you've set up. OP could absolutely do it and so could anyone else here if they wanted to try it. You somehow took it as an insult, but actually he's saying it's possible for anyone to do, which is the ideal scenario. It's not an insult to say someone's project isn't complex, it's a nod to the state of libraries and resources making it more accessible to use advanced devices. Programming/engineering isn't supposed to be hard if it can be easy. What she deserves props for is the creativity of pushing a frontier that not many people have pushed before (using it as a gaming interface) without any real guarantee of whether it would work well enough to justify the effort. I wonder if she implements an eye tracker for turning if that would work. Lets say for the clip of Halo, if she used an eye tracker to turn her character or aim, and with the brain activity controlling moving + shooting if that would work/make it feel more fluid, as it's looks like she's using head tilts to change directions.
@JohnThomas-mb8si
@JohnThomas-mb8si 6 месяцев назад
I was wondering the same thing! Id also be interested in the software and hardware could be reconfigured in different ways to capture an action depending on the person. Like would training it while playing normally assist in the speed of training? Like Simply moving forward while pressing the W key and moving the camera toward an object with the mouse look the same to the headset as just thinking about doing the same movement with assistance with an eye tracker?
@MrBa143
@MrBa143 6 месяцев назад
@@JohnThomas-mb8si What do you mean? The headset is not aware of the game. The headset simply reads your brain activity. You imagine something, which in turn activates a part of you brain. You keep doing that over and over and then you label it ("jump"). You then configure that trigger to a key on a virtual controller, and then everytime you think of that one thing, it should semi reliably run the trigger, which in turn activates the key on the virtual controller.

The FPS footage is ridiculous. It looks just like regular controller gameplay. Which is what is happening. Either an editing trick to make an interesting story, or it’s her own scam. @user-on6uf6om7s 6 месяцев назад
@@BryanHaskin It's definitely not fake, there are plenty of videos of average people and respected streamers using it but it's limited in its functionality. For instance, in Elden Ring, she doesn't use it to actually navigate, just for attacking and dodging, though she doesn't use a controller for bosses, instead only using dodging and attacking which is controlled by the headset. You can also see Wirtual, a Trackmania streamer, using it in a recent stream but he only uses it for acceleration and uses head tracking for movement as as again, it's not sufficient not subtle analog stick motion. So you're right in the sense that it isn't sufficient on its own for most games but it is functional for certain controls.

Anyone who cannot operate a keyboard, controller, or mouse due to body limitations should be given a chance to use one of these someday. In fact, this could be used for more than just for video games. Imagine this being applied for a cybernetic arm or leg, and such. Or for robots to operate in unlivable conditioned areas. Lucid dreaming feels like a similar experience: “thinking the same way every time for results”. For example, if you don’t want your dream to digress into a nightmare, then you can’t allow yourself to feel afraid. It’s kind of interesting. It’s like recognizing that we can control our mind (but still have the thoughts that recognize we’re controlling it). It’s almost paradoxical - but makes sense intuitively.

I see this working really well with in-game dialogue choices. Couple that with a Chat GPT like AI and you could just "think" of general response types, yes, no, sarcastic, sincere, urgent, agreeable, disagreeable, etc. and the AI could craft a proper situational dialogue response type based on your general "thought" choice, it could then use text to speech and have your character speak in-game. I could also see something like stat points playing a role in the way ChatGPT crafts your character's responses, high points in charisma or cool, your character responds with something witty and clever, high stats in strength with low intelligence, your character's speech is less eloquent and direct. Half the problem with using a voice interface in video games is that we are nowhere near as cool as the characters we are playing so having the ability to basically "think" say something smooth and witty, then have chat GPT do just that and hear our character speak it, is going to be mind-blowing.
