Playing with Colours - a Semi-Abstract Watercolour Forest Scene | Spontaneous Style | Impressionism

This is my favourite way to create in watercolour - paint an abstract wash, use lots of texture, and see where that wash takes me. The results are always a surprise.
Materials used:

Baohong Master's Choice 100% cotton 300gsm cold press paper, 18x26 cm (7 x 10 in)
PAINTS:
Aussie Red Gold (Daniel Smith)
Naples Yellow (Daniel Smith)
Olive Green (Daniel Smith)
Perylene Green (Daniel Smith)
Indigo (Art Spectrum)
Quinacridone Sienna (Daniel Smith)
Burnt Umber (Daniel Smith)
Lavender (Daniel Smith)
White Gouache (Winsor&Newton)
BRUSHES:
DaVinci Casaneo Flat 5898 Size 12
Da Vinci Casaneo Long Mop 490 Sizes 2; 0

I remember when I bought my first tube of Perylene Green and you made a comment that I had addressed on a painting you had done with it …and you said “have fun with Perylene Green.”…And I have had tremendous fun with it. I think I’ve gone through two tubes. This one you’ve done is lovely. I enjoyed your process very much.

Beautiful. Don't worry about what you call the trees, there are so many varieties, we know what you mean. The beautiful semi-abstract style allows you to express your impression of the trees and landscape, anyway.

You have such a good eye for color. Color choice and color combinations are my weakness. I never seem to choose the right colors. Working on it. Earthy colors are my favorite, but they don't work on florals which is what I paint most of the time.

Thank you so much! Colour can be so complex, I completely understand. I find that figuring out why some colour schemes are striking, and some are so drab helps me with my colour choice. If I see a colour palette in a painting that I really like I often refer to the colour wheel, and in the majority of cases there are complementary colours involved, as they elevate each other. Earthy colours are my fav too! They are so soothing...

Are the paints on loose watercolour paper or on a block of paper please. I love your style of painting

Thank you! This is a block, I use paper blocks pretty much exclusively as I find them very easy to use - no need to tape the paper to a surface, and the paper doesn't buckle as much.

Hi, yes I use Baohong Master’s Choice. It is very easy to find at art stores here in Australia… I think in Europe it might be available from Jackson’s Art or Amazon but I am not sure - so sorry!
