I decided to try my hand at making a Dorodango sphere.
Soil combinations used - all from my property, nothing special.
Equal parts clay and sandy soil with dry straw.
Equal parts clay and sandy soil without dry straw.
Topsoil, just below the grass layer with dry straw.
All versions had a similar end result. Clay and sand without straw being the best end result I got.

i put a rag in a drill to speed up and get a good shine. my first one i i made is just straight shovelled dirt, so who knows what materials are in it, i’ve made clay recently so that will be used to make my 2nd doradongo. plus people talk about making these in 1 day, but mine went exactly like this

I never knew that clay/dirt and water could look so nice! The spheres look similar to something i dabble in, although i use a nepalese technique, and a different material.

maybe use two screens at same time in your circle sifter to get it finer.

What happens if you forgo rubbing it with fine dirt to make the shell? I've seen some videos that don't do it and it seems to come out fine.

I don't think it's 100% necessary. There isn't a hard rule to follow, from what I can tell. I think the process of adding layers helps give a more round shape.

My first one looks like your textured one, shiny but rough. My friend said it looks like an old skee ball lol How do you get them so marble smooth? Just keep damp and adding more fine layers?

The fine dirt helps build up an outer shell. I added maybe 6 layers. After that, I waited for it to dry slightly until it started to feel firm. I started polishing it with a smooth jar (around 17 minutes in the video).

spray for shiny? that destroy the purpose of dorodango

I didn't have good luck getting a shine on those dorodango. It was more of an experiment to see what the spray would do.

Is it fragile?

Not overly fragile. They can be handled without much worry. One fell on the floor from about 4 feet, and only a small piece broke off. Very tough considering it's just polished dirt.

To get extremely fine dirt don’t use gloves, toss the dirt on one hand and just rub that over the surface. The finest stuff should stick to your hand. It would be a slower process, but get you finer dirt for polishing.
