I'm having some tongue-in-cheek fun and also adressing some thoughts on how important swing is in Irish music, and particularly so on the banjo!

Haha! Thoroughly enjoyed this lesson on swing! Love the cool bit, the death stare and the bot playing! Had a good laugh and there's a lot of great tips for healthy playing and musicality in there!

Crackin' lesson! Excellent and thank you for using Crowley's Reel-- for us who use your book, it's a mainstay and is a great delivery system for the swing message!

Top work as ever Enda. Excellent exposition of getting that forward movement and nice sense of ‘Nyah’. And so cool 😎 it was positively Arctic.

I feel like something you're leaving out is the focus on the off-beat pulse. You mentioned hitting the downbeat with a bit extra but I'd argue the opposite is going to be more helpful. If you can count it in right, working with a metronome on the off beat really helps bring out the swing in the tune. Been watching a bunch of your videos and really appreciate the masterclass "feeling" concepts and not just what notes to hit but how to hit them. Cheers!

Is there a logic to when you use your ring finger vs your pinky finger on your 5th fret notes? You go from using one to the other on the A and E strings.
@IrishTenorBanjo
@IrishTenorBanjo Год назад
I know! I use a flexible system I guess. I wish I’d learned to use my pinky for all fret 5 notes but it’s just not strong enough, so in the process of trying to learn that fingering method, I ended up with a combination of 3 and 4 finger methods. I like to think my pinky is finally getting a little stronger 💪

Thanks for this video. I understand what are you talking about with the emphasis on certain notes but I feel like its hard to keep that good swing sound when player at higher tempos....any advice for that?
@IrishTenorBanjo
@IrishTenorBanjo Год назад
For sure. Definitely when it gets up past 110/120bpm it’s harder but it’s still possible, maybe not with as much emphasis. Listen to De Dannan or Frankie Gavin, very fast playing but didn’t straighten too much.
