Wow, this was the absolute best video explanation for beginners. I just started trumpet and have consumed a lot of RU-vid content to try to get myself up to speed. The explanation of how the trumpet works was the base foundation I’ve been looking for. It also really helped to know that you can get started without buzzing. I’ve been working at it but have been really struggling. After your video, I was able to get a clear tone without much trouble. Thank you so much for this!

Played saxaphone in high school. At age 51, picking up the cornet for the first time. You guys are awesome! Love your point about blowing softly and naturally, rather than using a lot of air and trying to buzz first. This was a real breakthrough for me. Thanks! :)

I am impressed! I've never played in instrument (73yo). ALMOST gave up & sell my cornet. You guys guided me to do it right. I am "saved!" Now to practice and watch vid 2... Thank you😊

I have checked out so many courses on line and NEVER HAVE I SEEN SUCH A GREAT presentation of aperture and how to get a sound..only one other person I found talks about this approach , no forced buzzing, which I find difficult and unnecessary anyway!! this is the most thorough presentation intro to the trumpet structure plus getting a sound that I have ever seen! like you say, it should be NATRUAL AND EFFORTLESS!!! IT IS AMAZING TO ME THAT MORE trumpet players are not aware of this simple concept!!!!!!!!!!

I've been teaching my 10 yr. old Grand-son to play trumpet - long distance via ZOOM. I started playing when I was 11, myself. Today, on his first day of 5th grade, as we watched your video here and talked about blowing techniques... and listening to your instruction, blow air first and narrow the space in your lips - I'm excited to say he was able to play a C-D-E !!!! I'm very proud of him and he is excited to be playing 3 notes finally!! Yea! Thanks for this video!

Just unpacked my pink Tromba trumpet, I have not played trumpet before just saxophone, but I immediately get a lovely blow because I've spent years exploring breath support and how the instrument sings and resonates at quite gentle breaths.

This is great stuff! I looked at my hands and realized my right thumb is bracing the lead pipe and the pinky is resting on top of the hook a the same height as the valve buttons. it's very comfortable. With the concert mellophone I rest the edge of the bell in my left hand. After a few tries it seemed the most natural and stable position. Each instrument has it's own preferences.

Thank you guys. Totally brilliant. Okay. I'll buy a trumpet tomorrow. Might get one of those small ones so's I can take it in the car, practice there sometimes. No reason why not? Very interested in what you say about the sax. Can you say more? Can you give advice on that aspect of the sax - blow soft? I never see any vids talking about that, beginner or not. I came from (poor part time amateur) clarinet to the tenor and got along with it alright - many fights with getting the low C - and blowing quite a bit. Noisy. Videos, forums, told me 'it is a noisy instrument' make a noise. so I went with it. Then I recently got an alto. Surprised the hell out of me how easy it was to blow. Made me wonder if my tenor has a leak or something somewhere. Or if the mouthpiece/reed thing is a problem. Still don't know about that. But the thing is I was kinda forced by the ease of that alto blow to cool it a bit, calm down, blow softer. And I've begun to see that as you say the sax is a soft, quiet instrument. To my amazement. BUT: I don't really know how to go about it. LIke it must say something about choosing reeds and mouthpieces maybe? I don't know. But you guys seem to know something. I would love to hear it. And thanks again for a great vid. :) woops.... 9 years ago. Not going to get any replies now are we? Not from them. Their avatar links to a site that hasn't seen any updates for eight years, too. Ah well....

Hi Ted, the reason for a tighter and nasal sound could be that you sqeeze your lips too much, which makes the opening too tight. Try to loosen up a bit, make a slightly bigger opening. What also improves sound is practising on the mouthpiece (buzzing), which you can do whenever and where ever you feel like it. Keep a mouthpiece in your pocket and you'll be amazed how much 'lost moments' you will find in a day (and how much practising the mouthpiece will improve your sound). Good luck! Teus (Hello Trumpet)

You should just quietly blow air to the horn without pressing any valve, and like the guys said in the vídeo you should manipulate the aperture in your lips, if you are not making any sound in the open position it might be because your apertura is to loose

At 4:45 you don't do 2-12-23-13-123 as you did on the previous and on the following "nature" note. Also I wonder if your use of "nature tones" is from british english. I know of "natural" notes meaning they're not sharp and they're not flat and there are also "partial" tones, meaning they're part of the harmonic series (C-G-C-E-G-Bb-... or B-F#-B-D#-F#-A-... etc.), but "nature tones" is not something I've heard of in my part of the world (California, USA).
@eladiorodriguezmateo3687

When he says nature tones he is referring to the notes of thre Bb serie that you can play on trumpet without pressing any valve
