SAM, Amazing mate. I nearly died in 1998. I was in intensive care for 70 plus days, then was moved to a surgical ward where I remained for almost a year. The nurses and staff, who I obviously got to know really well, knew I was into making electronic music, and because I had my PlayStation in my hospital room, they got me Music as a birthday gift. From that moment on my stay in hospital became a lot easier, as I was able to keep my mind occupied with making some rudimentary songs on this! When I finally returned home, a lot of the tunes I had come up with whilst in hospital became the basis of future tracks, which I was able to fashion and craft using my proper equipment at home. This PlayStation software/game may be simple, but it holds a very special place in my heart! Cool vid mate

This was literally how I got into music production. Had this in the 90’s in college, the many days that no one had any money we’d cram into my room and make the loudest hardcore tracks. Years later I got the MTV music generator on PS2, that had quite a bit of power to it, even had a sampler, managed to remix vocal tracks, then I decided I wanted something better so bought myself a PC, found a cracked version of cubase SX 3, loved it for years, then got the wife to get me the proper Cubase 5, still use it nearly daily. And it all started from that PlayStation game over 20 years ago.

I started making music in high school on the PS1 MTV Music Generator (I think it was Music 2 in the UK) and for years I used it for drums/beats. MTV music generator definitely didnt get the warm welcome it deserved because back then, I don't think anyone would of believed you guys managed to compile a "complete" beat making program and run it on a PS1. Aside from a few producers , NOBODY acknowledged it for being anything more than a "game" . I always wondered how close Jester and Image-Line were because not even 2 years after MTV:MG a surprising revamped FL 2.0 is released and oddly it shared a striking resemblance, IMO.

Me and my best mate of 30 years got matching tattoos of the DJ guy from the cover last November because we spent our youth filling memory card after memory card, around 30 in all, (even deleting our games because we were worried about losing tracks) with Music and Music 2000. A few weeks ago we finally, after about 3 years of trying, backed up all of our tracks to a computer about 15 years after our memory cards should've degraded. Music and Music 2000 has been a really big deal for us so thank you!

Just in case anyone was wondering, the disc shown is 'Music: Music Creation For The PlayStation', which only had a UK release in 1998. 'Music 2000' was the 1999 advanced followup, and the NTSC/USA version of -that- was named 'MTV Music Generator'.

I absolutely loved this music program for PS1 back in the 90s. It was actually quite deep and editable as a music making tool, and my first experience of using a type of ‘DAW’ to sequence loops and one shots on a ‘computer’. It was easy to create fills, risers, edit samples etc. I made loads of tracks with it and recorded them into my Sony minidisc player as backups. Still got ‘em, and the same minidisc player is still working. They brought out a sequel to this one called Music 2000, but somehow I didn’t find it as good as the original. Apart from the obvious difference in sound quality and depth, the concept is not that disimilar 20 years later working on Korg Gadget! Great episode, brings back fond memories of my PS1 days and my first venture into ‘computer-made’ music. 👍🕷

Jester / Codemasters got the interface together for Music2000, with support for the dual shock controllers it was a lot faster for editing. Then they lost their mind and went all chintzy UI again for Music Generator 2 / Music 3000. Judge Jules was certainly the proto hipster DJ, but Music2000 was endorsed by such credible artists as Grooverider and Leftfield. With demo songs and videos from both. It was probably the most underrated software of the entire 20th century.

The main reason I've held on to my original PS was for Music 2000. Frustratingly limited in many ways, but all things considered a fantastic piece of software. I loved the next version of this 'game', music 2000/MTV Music Generator It let you import very short samples off a CD. it had better samples according to my taste

This was my addiction, it was a really intuitive and strangely (relatively) powerful piece of software for the Playstation. Was always frustrating that there was no sampling available in this version though, it made everything sound really similar. Still, very cool and I remember buying it as soon as it came out. Later on it also made me buy Reason for the PC.

@@krunk9790 i still would use this over anything that's out today because of the way you can sample.. I've never found another program that lets you have full control of the sound especially with a controller.. I'm bout to start making them again and posting them so ppl can hear how creative you can get with this game

I spent countless hours with that software from when I was 13-14 to 17 years old. I started using Cubasis VST when I was 15 but, I kept on using Music from time to time untill my Playstation developed a fault. I didn't play much with other games once I got Music, that CD was permanently into my Playstation. I cut my teeth on making music with it. By the way, at 6'50'' the note doesn't go higher because the sample is loaded at "high quality" (the number 6 before the instrument name has a green background, meaning it's at full quality) but you can load at "medium quality" (yellow background) or low quality (red background, if I recall correctly). If you lower the sound quality, you raise the pitch of the sample by one octave (and you save memory to load more samples). Another funny - albeit memory-hungry - thing to do with Music is to load a bunch of vocal samples, then use the "sampling compensation" (sample start/end point) to cut pieces of words and then sequence the different them to obtain new words. I have a lot of memories of that software, it has a special place in my heart.

Music was a great entry into making tracks, I spent loads of hours as a teenager using this. However, coming back to it again before selling my video game collection: using the controller to lay down notes and patterns is the most fiddliest of methods I have ever endured. Love the input from legendary musician CoLD SToRAGE / Tim Wright on the demos too. Just as an aside - I would totally recommend anyone that has the disc that you use a utility like PSound on Windows to extract all the samples from the Playstation disc as Wavs (all at 11khz, 22khz and 44khz versions)

The follow up to this (Music 2000) was pretty good too,, it came with a little microphone that plugged into the into the PlayStation so you could take voice samples plus you could take samples from cd's too if I'm remembering it right. Cool video, brings back memories.
