The tokin caps are a bit of a myth still, most of the time it's the RSX chip itself failing and replacing the caps prolongs the life a bit but not really solves it. Research nvidia bump gate for more info. Rip Felix did an excellent video about a week ago

Great video! Its good to see things kept out of landfill, but the caps probably cost more than the console was worth haha! Good job.

Just some suggestions on the second PS3. When applying thermal paste after a de-lid, apply the paste to the top of the IHS of both chips first (but do not put thermal paste on top of the chip dies themselves). This allows each of the IHS to adhere to the main heatsink AND maintain an orientation that is (as close to) parallel to the surface of the heatsink as possible (the surface of the chip dies themselves will facilitate with leveling). Partially assemble the console up to where the two clamps are secured (to ensure that the IHS are pressed firmly to the heatsink). Now disassemble, and the IHS should be "glued" to the heatsink. Visually inspect the IHS to ensure that they are not tilted. Then proceed to put thermal paste onto the chip dies. Doing it the way you did on the video allows the IHS to "float" between the dies and the heatsink and opens the possibility that the IHS is not parallel to the surface of the heatsink or CPU dies. This in turn results in uneven heat transfer.

Nice video! BUT VERY DANGER if you do this: 25:40 you can break the vram chips! The chance here to break the vram chips is 50:50 on newer PS3's like the CECH-20XX,25xx,30xx etc. It's like russian roulette, it can go good, but it can go very bad! Sony really dropped the ball on the reliability of these. I hate it. These are the best looking ps3 models in my opinion.

Of all the token removal videos I’ve watched you removed those beautifully. I’m still researching the YLOD since it’s basically just telling you there is an issue and it’s left to use to figure that issue out.

Hi, nice video. We learn a lot from you. I need your help. I bought a ps3 with ylod and I read the errors with the syscon. I got the error 1002, and I changed one of the Nec tokin in the video. I solved the problem and the console works perfectly, but the only problem is that when I turn it off the red light stays blinking and I can't restart with the controller. The console turns off completely, but I have to press and hold the power button on the console to turn off the red blinking light. Do you know what could be the problem? Would I have to change more nec tokin? Thanks for everything.

The 60 gb model breaks if you play PS2 games for people who can fix it it’s worth to own then it’s playable as long you can fix it 3 broke on me that’s why I no longer want it my 320 gb and 500 gb does fine never broke once it’s not to play PS2 games it to play PS3 games abd unlock trophies 🏆

ive got two ps3 fats and a og xbox in my cars trunk lol. i think ill take them all apart, and see what i can salvage if the two ps3 dont work, but the og XBOX, id love to fix and keep since i got rid of mine when i was a kid.

I have an OG Fat 60GB backwards compat that is freezing in the XMB when I scroll to games. It is 100% an RSX problem as I have already torn it down and tried to reflow it. Before I did that, it was YLOD. But I wouldn't say I fixed it, that's for sure. I wish I had a reball station I really want to get this thing working again!

Tokins can temporarily start working again from heat exposure, so I'd leave them for a while amd then try again

I have a 80GB 2nd Gen PS3 fat that i bought new in 2007 and after 10 years of use it started to over heat and i believe only why it took that long was because it always had a fan in front of it, in 2017 I did a DELID and i work on electronics but i was very worried of messing up the CPU as it was the hardest for me to do and with the possibility of scratching the traces but by luck i did it right the first time and i have had no issues with the console this month i revisited opening up the console and replaced the thermal paste again and this time using Artic MX-6 on the CPU and GPU and Artic MX-5 on the Heat Spreaders along with replacing the thermal pads. I thought finally with this set up i would be done, well come to find out I should had delid the south bridge cause under that is a chip being cooled by thermal paste and come to find out that the south bridge does get warm and needs to be cooled so i ordered some cutting wire that is used to open cell phone screens cause the space between the south bride lid is thinner then the CPU and Ill go ahead and replace the clock batter while its open again.....wish me luck.

After 15 years of great service, my PS3 passed away yesterday. (Red blinking light). It happened suddenly and unexpected.

What’s your advice for replacing the internal hard drive? My PS3 has a 1tb HDD and I would like to replace it with a 1tb SSD. I’m just not sure which brand to buy.

What temperature do you use to soften the thermal glue on the heat spreaders? I get paranoid now putting any heat near RSX :)

Nice job. But I would not delid as a preventative measure. If after cleaning and new thermal paste the temps/fan speed are too high (CFW or HEN software to check them), then I would consider delidding. Also, you can "Re-merry" a new BD using CFW tools.

I don’t know exactly what your situation worse I just know that on my PS3 slim I’ve changed out the disk Drive and it still works

I've got an backwards compatible ps3 in working state, i got the syscon error log from ps3toolset, it has multiple 1001 errros, after cleaning the console (not deliding) and spending some time on power on, the console suddenly after normal shut off, didn't even goes to stand by mode (red light). After changing 2 power cords, the light pop in! Booting the console and got YLOD! After several times of turning off and on, i dissembly it again and reassembly, the console boot up!!! I've check again the syscon and i got 3003 error! The console working normally without ylod (again). till i get it to local electronic store to change the NEC TOKIN Capacitors. Could the problem be those NEC TOKIN?

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for this series of videos which inspired me to try and fix some PS3 consoles myself. I didn't have prior experience and tools to do this but I followed your advice and got everything I needed, including several broken consoles I found on the local marketplace. After I got all prepared it was kind of hard to finally start doing the repairs but today I have finally fixed my first PS3! It was just tokins but it was a lot of fun! I tried to replicate your technique in desoldering the old ones and even though I got the top part melted it was a success! I used RIP-Felix's tantalizer boards to make the replacement capacitors look neat and I'm very happy with the result! Once again, thank you for inspiring me!

Any videos on fixing USB ports on ps3 motherboard? All my 4 USBs suddenly stopped working at once, so I cannot charge or use anything on them 🤔

The only way to truly fix a phat backwards compatible ps3 from getting ylod is replacing the rsx 90nm chip with a slim 40nm through a mod called the Frankenstein

To answer your initial question: is it because you really like the movie Chappie? Oh, never mind. It is just because they're broken. That was my second guess.

You should change the tokins of cpu too on the first one, because they could fail in the future, nec tokins are pretty awful. I use Mortal Kombat 9 or Komplete to stress consoles. It has a watch mode if you leave it on the title screen.

Why have you not replaced all the nec capacitors? They are prone to failure...

Scraping away the solder mask to put those capacitors on seems like a waste. Why not just solder them to their pads and run a bridge wire made from some old through-hole resistor legs across the negative terminals instead and the exposed pad? This is elegant enough, and also makes it easier to repair in the future when these ones also need to inevitably be replaced.

man u will fail sometimes but you will learn from it i broke 2 ps3 and after that i was carefull enough to fix the another ps3 it was a CECHAO1 By the way great video as always :)

i had a CECHA01 backwards compatible ps3 i got from ebay for way too much before that unfortunately died of the YLOD after a while

Had same problem, and just decided to heat those tokkins up with a heat gun at around 250 degrees very carefully for about a minute, and it did the trick !!! 🎉🎉

i used a broken board to try learn how to delid and i scratched the chip lol. anyways i then tried my luck on a working board. delid without any damage to the chips.......... and the wifi/BT stopped working haha

you cant replace the CELL on ANY ps3, they are married to SYSCON and NAND/NOR. if you have those chips WITH the replacement CELL, it can be repaired.

Use a "fine fishing line" to slide (floss) under the heat sink of the CPU in order to separate the silicon seal.

What kind of a sollution you used during delidding? Was something oil based? I delidded one of my ps3 and ... jammed the cpu. And i have to delid my other because it's reaching 80+ temps

Good Job my friend... i wish you could repair mine...it's practicaly new, i had it closed in it's original box for 3 yrs...tried to get it fixed they cleaned it and replaced the thermol paste but no luck on making it work...they couldn't find the problem...probably lack of expierence....
