Playstation 4 (PS4) Teardown and Disassembly - PC Perspective 

Thanks so much, guys. I'm terrible at working with electronics, and I decided to replace the thermal paste in my PS4 with Arctic Silver 5. Would've struggled or broke something if it wasn't for this video. The reassemble process was very helpful, too! I think I put a little too much thermal paste on the APU... One little problem that isn't clearly specified is how to remove the fan wire connector. You have to pull it upwards, not outwards.

Man...that fan cable was a real challenge....LIFT THE DAMN THING FROM UNDERNEATH...if you've ever taken a handheld apart you would have known that as soon as you saw it...

The amount of thought put into this console is amazing. The thing is jam packed with the power supply built in, and it still runs cool and quiet.

its actually pretty amazing how they fit all that into a small box but there has to be heating issues with all the heat that thing would generate.

The first video I watched which actually introduced me to PC Perspective was the Wii U Teardown.. Hopefully others will stumble across this PS4 teardown and become faithful PC Per viewers :)

How in the hell did they fit all of that AND a power supply in such a small case? The Xbox One is twice as big and its power supply is on the outside -.-

I think the reason both the PS4 and Xbox One have a TON of thermal paste is to be on the safe side after YEARS of the system running non-stop. For those of you unaware, thermal paste degrades, especially in terms of its thermal conductivity. It is recommended to re-apply paste (unless you are using either Coolabs liquid metal or that weird liquid "phase change" thermal material, in which case, you probably will never need to re-apply) If you REALLY glob it on like the PS4 and Xbone, there will be less noticeable degradation. And as the chips are already so low frequency and power, as well as being totally unable to overclock, that amount of paste is probably fine. What I DO NOT AGREE WITH is the way Linus Tech Tips recommends to apply pastes like AS5, TX and others. Linus uses just one glob dead center of the die. I have experimented with an old system using AS5 and MANY different application methods. And what was CONCLUSIVELY THE BEST - at least in my my results, is the way I had been applying thermal paste since I built you first PC almost 20 years ago! And that is: Applying 5 dots of paste on each corner and the center. I then take a CLEAR plastic bag, making sure not to touch the side that will be spreading the compound, and I just simply put my index finger in said plastic bag then begin to spread the compound EVENLY across the entire contact surface, making a layer of compound about 1/4 a millimeter thick. Then, I just add 5 more TINY dots of compound on the 4 corners and middle so that when I put the heatsink on, it will fully fill any microscopic grooves on both sides without squeezing the paste out all over the place. Bear in mind - this application method is for more experienced builders, as you need to have a good feel of exactly how much compound you are spreading, and then the size of the dots on top of the even application. Otherwise it is VERY easy to add far too much compound which WILL lower your efficiency! Another thing to keep in mind; DO NOT FALL FOR THE COOLABS LIQUID METAL HYPE! When compared to AS5 and TX4, assuming all 3 are applied properly - the difference is negligible! Most tests showing at most 1 to 2 degrees C above AS5/TX4 - AND that doesn't even account for the FACT that AS5 actually will get even lower Temps after a little curing! Also the metals used in the Coolabs liquid metal WILL corrode Aluminum! So you had better be DAMNED certain that neither surface it is touching is made of aluminum! About the only time I actually prefer Coolabs liquid metal is when I delided my i7-3770k, as the IHS is not soldered like the Sandy Bridge CPUs, and depending on the factory application it can REALLY hinder it's ability to overclock! And that is what Liquid metal is best for! As it does NOT degrade, and will transfer heat ALMOST as good as a soldered IHS would! But again, that is something only hard-core tech geeks like myself should do. As you even need to score the surfaces a bit, and the whole process of deliding can DESTROY your processor if you aren't careful!

I wish for a day, a time, when console gamers can play with Pc gamers through private servers!

Super Goop works better than super glue for the fan cables IMO. It isn't runny and comes off with a heat gun much more cleanly if you ever have to disassemble again.

The reason it was beeping each time you moved it, is because it has a built in motion sensor to sense and alert that it might not be in the position it is intended to be in. The PS4 system is meant to be on one side. That side is the side that doesn't have the light that goes from blue to white on start up!

Great video. I'm always curious on what's inside of anything electronics. I even disassembled my Sega Mega Drive way back then and see what's inside and put them back afterwards. But I can't disassemble my SNES because of security screws. Philips screwdriver can't open it.

Amd made chipsets yes...but the compiled collection of chips are arranged on a sony designed and manufactured pcb, smart selection of chips with in house component really pays off

The reason why it's wobbling is because you took off part of the top of the ps4 off the glossy part.

Im glad to see they made little to no improvement to the cooling fan/heat sink/tension bracket. I expect these to last the same short time that ps3's last. I have two 120mm 70cfm fans screwd together turbo charging each other directly over the hole where the original fan on my ps3 was. It stays nice and cool even with the absolutely terrible airflow design. I also cut out a bunch of plastic from the back of and above the power supply just for good measure. I can feel a nice steady airflow now and she never gets hot. I expect to have to do the same with ps4

I feel sorry for fanboys of all things :( They never take the time to enjoy something outside the norm because they think everything else is terrible compared to what they have... it's a depressing mindset for gamers of all ages and experience levels.

ps3 actually came out with HDMI cable and the front usb cables can read smaller memory units, but mostly true :D

When they said that it is the first Sony console to come with a HDMI Cable, they were wrong. If you bought the PS3 and the Sony 24" 3D TV bundle, it came with a HDMI cable. :P

the led on the controler also puts up the color from the game so if most colors are red it will indicate red same with all other colors

AS5 is conductive and can short out the processor due to the silver flakes. You should be using MX-4. AS5 can run down the sides of the chip and short out resistors. Especially it the unit is placed on its side. AS5 is for computers not consoles.

i don't get why some PC Gamers try and get mad at console gamers for its inferior hardware consoles are just a cheaper and simpler alternative so leave console wars between console before we all start battling about our own PC specs

Coming from a pc gamer perspective the ps4 honestly feels a little better than the ps3, it went from 600-720p on lowlike settings to 720-1080p on mediumlike settings. With a neat interface too. Though I'm more integrated to my performance and great steam sales

the reason why it was bleeping at you is because you corrupted the system by unplugging it on standby mode. to turn it off properly you turn it off by the pad by holding in the PS button on the pad and selecting turn off and wait for the white bar to stop flashing

the Cooling System both PS3 and PS4 is SHIT. Honestly.

step 1: go get a friend or family person who has an ict degree and maybe works/worked at a store, where they buy stock ammounts of ssd's ram motherboards, etc, Step 2: get that friend to ask his boss/ex when hes shipping new partts in because, thats how i got them at what the stores pay for it. Step 3: make sure he doesnt say he asked for a friend. i dont speak my brother very often but he showed me a site where the webstore/techmarket, buys it and, all parts old and new ar availible, my brother works at a phone/tech sum company now so, really wished i had that website, and i would ask some other friends to do it know, (who's have an employee/friend discount with his boss, the boss just needs to add 1 of each part u want more, it wont cost u retail, but i get a 1000eu pc for under 400 thats for sure!, 8g ram sticks from kingston (cooled) own design of case, and see if motherboards fit in case. Everyone be prepared for those profitable lights of death :) I see it is pretty much a glorified PS3 slim. Same build just upgraded. I would assume the Xbox one will be built a lot better. I would not be surprised if the Xbox one is built like the xbox slim. Hope to see a Xbox one disassemble. I got alot of info from viewing the parts.

bought my ps3 in 2006. paid 500 dollars. bought my ps4 in 2014 paid 400 dollars. if ps4 life lasts as long as ps3 Im looking at 16 years for 900 dollars. or roughly 56 bucks a year. top end gaming pc? includuding updating the hardware that gets outdated every 56.8 seconds? I would estimate closer to 1000$ a year. So boys and girls, who's the winner and who's the loser?

If i bought a PS4 i'd take it apart and take the power brick out of the PS4 otherwise it'll fucking overheat.

My PS4 had a Samsung HDD, which I immediately swapped out for a 1TB SSHD. Seeing as how most of the games are a fair sight larger than the 8GB cache, an SSHD probably won't perform any better than a standard hard drive.
