PlayStation 5 1440p Support Tested! Good For PC Monitors, Better 120Hz For HDMI 2.0 TVs?

New beta firmware is available for PlayStation 5 that adds support for 1440p-compatible monitors and - potentially - HDMI 2.0 televisions. So how does the new functionality work, do 1440p games render natively on 1440p screens, and how could Sony improve on this beta release? Rich takes a look. This video is mastered at 4K resolution and best viewed on a 4K screen. 1440p captures from PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are displayed with a 1:1 pixel map within the 4K project.
Bonus Drinking Game: Take a shot whenever Rich says '1440p'.

I don't think Sony thought that people would continue to ask for 1440p and thought it would die down, after all Sony didn't sell a single 1440p display. But when people wouldn't let it go especially since the xbox had it, they caved which is why it took 2 years. This is why competition is good and we need multiple players in the game.

1440p is exactly 3x480p, so it's the ideal resolution to play emulated PS1 and PS2 games with perfect pixel scaling and no anti-aliasing. 1080p and 2160p are not perfect multiples of 480, at 2.25x and 4.5x, so there will be some blur or pixels not having the same size or letterboxing.

Now with the support of 1440p i have a VERY interesting question! On TVs that have hdmi 2.0 and support 120hz at 1440p resolution only, at games like ratchet and clank, horizon forbidden west and also the upcoming god of war ragnarok that you can choose between 40fps mode and 60 fps mode (lets leave the 30fps mode out of it) which one is the better way to go? I mean should you choose the 40fps balanced mode which lowers the resolution at 1440p on 40fps in order to achice these 120hz which are needed for the 40fps output on a hdmi 2.0 OR stay on 60fps but with native 4k resolution? I dont know what is happening internally with the resolutions at each game individually (upscaling and downscaling) but on paper, at least what forbidden west and ragnarok mentions, is that the 60fps performance and 40 fps balanced mode are BOTH on 4k resolution, with the latest not to be achievable on hdmi 2.0 version thus the drop at 1440p resolution. There was a similar discussion for hdmi 2.0 and 120hz TVs at the video with ratchet and clank when 40fps mode first came out but there was no 1440p at the moment and 1080p was out of the question as it produces a very blurry image especially on bigger TVs. I hope that FSR and DLSS to make native resolution irrelevant. Instead of quality/balance/perf we should have frame targets 30/60/120 and that dinamic Res to be always a default to allow the best quality possible. On consoles dinamic Res is a reality but doesn't make miracles, I hope that tech evolves and we don't have to choose between quality 4K30 and perf 120hz/60hz. DLSS nowadays makes low Res monitor image better by rendering on higher internal Res and scaling down preserving most of its quality. I hope that native resolution to be irrelevant whether on TVs/monitors or internally. DLSS, FSR etc. should make image better in every scenario. It is possible!
