Playstation Portal - Adding Bluetooth audio (is it worth it?)

How to add bluetooth audio to the Playstation Portal and how good it is once you do.
The Playstation Portal does not come with bluetooth audio, so you can’t use your AirPods, Pixel Buds, Galaxy Buds, Beats or whatever other bluetooth audio devices you might have. However, you can install a little 3.5mm bluetooth transmitter to the Portal which will provide bluetooth sound that you can connect your devices to for under £30.
Question is.. How good is it and is there much in the way of lag and latency?

This dude is freaking awesome I so wish more RU-vidrs could take a decent amount of time to do reviews and explain things.. I've done port forwarding and setting up my PlayStations IP address and used tips that help experience of the portal but not everybody is an advance user and will know exactly what to do but his directions are precise I've been sending my friends recently to your videos..

Pleased you’re on the scene, your explanations are clear. I find my pulse 3d ps5 head set works fine when I’m at home with the dongle connected. For Bluetooth connectivity to the portal. My biggest portal issue is latency when other devices are using my home WiFi. Very pleased with your video on how to get the best connection at home, still need to configure. Keep up the good work.

Thanks friend! Appreciate that! I use a pair of Steel Series USB wireless in exactly the same way you describe at home. Works fine, but I'm sticking to wired when away from home :)

To add onto the information in this video, I recently purchased a bluetooth adapter with AptX Adaptive support (Ugreen USB Audio Transmitter) as well as some earbuds with AptX Adaptive support that have their own game mode on top of that (Soundpeats Air4 Pro). After some very heavy sales from black friday, total was about $55~. Results have been great! There is no discernible latency even when playing COD and the sound is still great quality. And the buds' game mode also solves latency for something like the Switch with its normal SBC bluetooth. But anyway, yeah. Using some earbuds/headphones with AptX Adaptive support and a transmitter like the one in this video also set to the correct codec will yield great results.

Does the USB Steel Series work wired in the Portal? Wired via USB or 3.5mm?
@TheGameFatherUK
@TheGameFatherUK 8 месяцев назад
@@giacintorenta7579 The USB adapter works with the PS5, rather than the Portal (only the 3.5mm adapter works for audio on that, other than the new PS Link stuff). So the Steel Series is just for 'close' proximity to the PS5.

Funny thing, I had ordered this previous of watching this video. I ordered these because I thought they were low latency. I suppose my sony buds aren’t compatible with aptx
@TheGameFatherUK
@TheGameFatherUK 8 месяцев назад
Sony use their own codec called LDAC which I think is quite highly regarded but falls a little short of aptX. You'd need to make sure that both transmitter and receiver both support it in order to use it. I'm pretty sure that the Avantree transmitter doesn't.

And if you use a USB c dongle⁉️🤔 Or a complete system like the Razer as for Ps5?!😅
@TheGameFatherUK
@TheGameFatherUK 8 месяцев назад
No joy with USB-C I'm afraid, it only supports audio through the 3.5mm audio jack and Sony's new PS Link hardware. If you're only playing at home, then you can use whatever wireless audio system you might have working on your console (as long as it'll reach to where you're playing on the portal - that's what I do).
@Mostheater
@Mostheater 3 месяца назад
I think without transmitter Bluetooth would have been pretty much without latency. Every manufacturer gets this going flawlessly, like Nintendo Switch, Steam deck, Logitech gcloud. So I think it’s only about selling their overpriced earbuds… will probably also stick with the wired ones…

I got them for $60 on Black Friday so you connect them to the 3.5mm Bluetooth adapter into the portal?

Or does the usb c dongle work on the portal?
@TheGameFatherUK
@TheGameFatherUK 8 месяцев назад
Audio on the Portal is only available through the speakers or 3.5mm jack. So you need either a 3.5mm bluetooth transmitter like the one in the video. Or, you can plug the USB-C ones into your console and use them whilst on the portal at home (as long as the signal from the console reaches where you are at home).

@@TheGameFatherUKthat’s ponderous, I just double checked since it’s been awhile and there is no latency. Your findings would also imply that there would be latency/audio sync issues while watching videos on a MacBook with AirPods, and that is simply not true.

Color me "surprised"...Sony pulled a scummy page out of their old playbook by deliberately neglecting to optimize universal Bluetooth audio for this waste of resources so people can throw their money away on their expensive proprietary Pulse and Inzone earbuds. This thing's lack of that capability reminds me of the crap people used to settle for when the Switch lacked the same Bluetooth audio capability...until they finally released an update for it, which, to say the least, still managed to be underwhelming and not worth the wait. The fact that both devices have Bluetooth tech embedded in them, just for the company to half-ass with their Bluetooth options, is pathetic enough. If the user has to band-aid such a lazy omission of a feature on any device, that device needs to go back to the drawing board, which, in the Portal's case, is a redundant reality.

this man does not do his research, everyone don’t listen to him he is trying to make you purchase a far more expensive transmitter, at 0:45 there is a transmitter that I purchase and use on my ps portal and it’s only 6.99 or 4.89 as listed in this man’s own video , and it’s not bulky as he states , on the contrary it’s more concealed and out of the way then the one he shows in the video , I can’t even see my transmitter or feel it .
@TheGameFatherUK
@TheGameFatherUK 3 месяца назад
"Trying to make you purchase"? Firstly, I bought it myself, it wasn't part of any kind of promotion or sponsor. Secondly, my conclusion was that it wasn't worth it, so how is that even close to persuading someone to buy anything? Adding any Bluetooth to the Portal sucks, unless you have a compatible set of earphones/buds that works with the low latency codecs. Moron.
