Also need to purchase albums and lobby for increased playing on "the airwaves" to actuate publishing/royalty/ASCAP payments etc; I'm from his hometown (where he grew up and graduated high school 73') of ALBION,MI. an amateur Soundman 10 yrs. his junior. I don't personally know him but share mutual friends/aquaintances. Collectively we prob. own nearly everything he has his hands in. Before his mother passed we all knew her. When I was young and gigging regularly in the 80"s his mother DOROTHY dry cleaned my clothes and I helped her a few times with her lawn, snow removal and equipment. She was very kind accomodating and down to earth. She was more than happy to discuss him in short intervals. She liked living here. (small town from 12- down to 8,000 ppl.) She had his first 4 gold and platinum albums displayed on her wall and kept the curtains open for all to see (literally decades) until she left for nursing home. I would sometimes take ppl. to see that I would meet in a local tavern who were familiar. I would just drive by and not allow them to make a spectacle (stopping taking pics etc;) we all respected her and you BILL. This makes me sick as well. Besides all the professional work he is known for he has personally helped/counseled others trying to climb the proverbial ladder (aforementioned mutual friends) in music/studio related subjects back here at home. He recently recorded Bass tracks on my longtime Guitar player's son's 1st EDM,EP, JEFFRY HILL: DIMENSIONS, for a price. I believe you can hear snippets here on yt. So he has been doing anything as much as possible to stay afloat. Let this not be another sad end story in the life and works of a tremendously talented artist of the world who has given us so much. Maybe those with the proper clout could get him on some popular TV venues for renewed exposure to new audiences. God speed MR. LASWELL. K.MILLS ALBION,MI. USA

Incredible comments here, very interesting. He needs a big documentary done on him...it would be a stellar cast too...

I think it was about 20 years ago I quit the rock band that someone from high school asked me to join and started a recording project of experiment electronica based music. I remember having a discussion with one of the people I was collaborating with about what he referred to as "dub jazz" as a growing trend where a piece of music was sampled and fed into a looping machine as a basis of rhythm and a jazz musician would play over it. We had alot of fun making weird noises usually with a moog synthesizer and feeding that into a roland space echo into my lexicon jam man looper, one track I overdubbed a microphoned alto sax into an effects processor and twisted the knobs on the chorus/flanger unit making it sound like a constipated whale. Then added some king crimson style fuzz bass. I didn't think about it but I suppose was kind of a laswell / brian eno / sun ra kind of approach. It didn't last long but it was a fun break to experiment and relax a little bit from all the formal attempts I made at studying jazz over the years. I always associated dub jazz with bill laswell and my friend was into material and us3 on the blue note label was just starting to emerge as a trend. I also had "dis is da drum" by herbie hancock. I'm not sure about this but I think bill laswell invented dub jazz.

Great video Andy. "Radioaxiom - A Dub Transmission" by Jah Wobble / Bill Laswell is really great. However, if you want to blow your mind (and possibly your speakers) you may want to start with the track "Cybotron" from the album "Dub Chamber 3 - The Exegesis" by Bill Laswell - Sacred System. Jah Wobble features on this track. When I lived in South Korea I used to listen to this on my headphones as I was coming home late at night on the subway. The sort of deep bass rumblings over dub sounds that you actually physically feel through your body. Great stuff and great memories.

Best way I know how to describe Bill Laswell: he's a musical alchemist.

Andy when we were on the same label with Hiphoprisy. I was so proud to be near his works on Iland records. He was producing so much Important work through that label.

This is his problem I think. He made money by making lots of albums which were cheap but with very high production values and they all sold a bit. If he had 250 album out only selling 1000 copies then thats quarter of a million gross. Then he had his production fees on top of that. But he must have been hit really hard by streaming. His entire catalogue is up on Bandcamp and because there is so much hardly anyone is listening, even though it's crammed full of Bootsy and PFunk albums. So he has been having to survive by gigging and he is obviously not well enough to do that. And I would be interested to know what he gets for Rockit, as that is pretty much entirely him...
