At 16:15, I want to clarify that this is only for the Playbook install process (to prevent Defender from slowing down or otherwise false-flagging AME Wizard's Playbook runner, which is open source), and next restart Windows will auto-enable Defender if you didn't select to disable it in the Atlas options. At 18:06, I want to clarify that the checkbox is only for auto-updates and that the user can update manually if they disable it. With manual updates, users will get notifs for updates if they don't disable them. We agree that Microsoft making a ‘debloated’ install of Windows accessible to everyone would be amazing. Still, we intend Atlas to be the best modification out there, and that’s why we’ve made various things like the security customizable.

Setting the region to "English (World)" in the installation of Windows 11 prevents a lot of bloat from being installed. That is as lite of an edition you can get right now. You can change the region afterwards to your preferred region.

I used to be a huge Windows fanboi. In fact, I used to mock Linux and Linux users saying "The only reason why they love it so much is because when they finally get it running they have no choice but to love it due to the sunken cost." I had to eat my words and swallow my pride when someone finally convinced me to give it a try after I saw how shitty Windows 8 was. I don't have a single Windows computer anymore anywhere in my house, everything's running Linux, and I've built my business on developing Linux server software. I remember installing windows to a new computer and being horrified how many useless things they were asking me to install or things they wanted me to activated (and a lot was about sharing my information). And even after refusing all that, I had to sit down to uninstall and deactivated useless stuff. Took me like 30 minutes... (first time on windows 11 so I was not used to a lot of the things). The menus are also really badly design.

Ghost spectre is frequently audited, I have been using it for 2 years as a second install for minor things that don't work on my Linux side (Adobe) (Maya). I looked and there is no suspicious traffic there are no weird changes to the registry side of things. It's quite clean but it's like muta said, always trust what you're downloading don't take my word for it. I will however not be using ISOs down the like I was a little dumber a couple years ago to have done that. Next time I'll probably use a script like Atlas or something well known open source and audited on a a genuine windows iso just to avoid anything that could very well be hiding deep in there.

I have a i5 13600X and a 4060. I run about 200 fps on most games up to 700 for low end games and no less than 90 on high end games. This has never crossed my mind.

I'm not really aching for gaming performance, but when my OS wastes my time because of some bloat that will never improve my life it really pisses me off. That plus removing all the creepy big brother shit really makes me consider stuff like AtlasOS.

What about tools like WinAero Tweaker? I literally only use it to permanently disable the Windows spyware, and add a little more customization to the OS, like making it so I can shut down my system just from right clicking on the desktop. Also, just so you know, I don't care how many times you say it, Muta. Switching to Linux is literally NOT as easy as you pose it to be. Like, yes, installing and learning to use it is not the problem. The problem comes in when I want to play a multiplayer game. What happens there? I'm SOL. What happens if a game I want to play in future after I've already switched doesn't support Linux? I'm SOL. We use Windows because there IS NO ALTERNATIVE. Linux is NOT an alternative until everything works on it, and I do mean EVERYTHING.

The only official way to debloat Windows without breaking functionality is using LTSC

Christ Titus Makes a windows debloat tool because there is an actual value in them due to game compatibility hurdles with linux. I think its open source too . Windows has little issues that actually hit your system with a noticeable performance drop when they happen like an update happening while gaming or Telemetry phoning home at the wrong time. It's not so much getting the 5 extra frames, as much as it is creating a consistent experience you are in control of.

Clix uses a custom version of Windows and during a major Fortnite tournament he got BSOD and ruined a couple of games, probably cost him a lot of money

If you know where to go, LTSC is the best version of Windows that you can install if you, for some reason, still have an over reliance of Adobe (through morally correct ways) or games that has an anti-cheat because the developer refuses Linux for a multitude of reasons.

And this is exactly why i dont immediately upgrade. Im still running 10. And i will until the last minute its supported.

"a little extra frames" seems to be a bit unfair toward the people who create and work on atlas or revisionOS. Both are open source on github and anyone can look at the changes they make. Optimizing does make a huge difference, especially in the low fps. And thats not even speaking about disabling anything spyware / telemetry related yet. I make my own ISOs using NTLite, i dont know why optimizing or just editing windows isos is so frowned upon but installing X version of linux (distribution) is okay. You can make whatever you want out of windows with enough research, if you dont want to rely on 3rd party providers then just do it / learn it yourself. There is ALOT of performance to be gained over just a stock windows and the experience will be generally better because you can just remove the things that annoy you. Ads in the search bar? Gone Cloud search? Gone Anything else that annoys you? Gone

If Linux: - supported all games (Epic Games and Steam) - could run all exe's/programs ...I would switch over. But I tried last year and had so many walls I ran into: couldn't run SQL Server, Visual Studio, Photoshop, Fortnite, certain Steam games,... Sure, there's alternatives for these programs, but I needed them for college. If you're not just browsing the web and checking emails, going to Linux is hard. Request @SomeOrdinaryGamers: please make an OS for us that is not bloated and can run everything. TempleOS but for the gamers.

You mentioned Chris Titus, I only used his Windows utility which also does debloating, he has yt videos about it, and HardenTools also, but yea like said if you don't make a custom ISO yourself and if you don't trust those scripts don't run this stuff, also I don't see a problem with "gutting" Windows, brother I would totally make a ultra debloated windows ISO and run that on a Linux vm only for gaming of course or idk if some program doesn't run on Linux, thats the future of Windows rn how things are going, if you need Windows it in the 1st place, virtualized under Linux

tbh these ios are really bad, but they are affecting other good custom OS projects like RevisionOS, which’s not even an iso but an open source playbook which debloats and makes the windows experience much much better, i’ve used it for the past 1 years with an i9400f and a gtx 1050ti and it’s running really fast

A windows lite version would sell like hotcakes. Like, imagine windows with nothing but the basics out of the box, where all you might need to do is remove telemetry. I just switched to a linux setup for gaming for different reasons, but so many people would rather deal with downloading their own apps if it meant windows didn't download apps for them.

Custom iso's in the tweaking community are quite reliable ngl It's a niche gamer community that focuses mainly on lowering latency It's not as commercial as linux or any of the mainstream debloated windows versions you mentioned

Actually, there is a lighter version of Windows called the "LTSC/LTSB variants." It is officially from Microsoft, and I found it less resource consuming than the original. I know that it is mainly for businesses and lacks some features, like the Microsoft Store, but it can be re-added with a script. Overall, I prefer these versions over the "consumer" versions.

Chris Titus’s power shell utility is a pretty good all in one tool for reducing some bloat and tweaking a windows install

I want to switch, but there are no drivers for Linux when it comes to my gaming mice, keyboard, headset and other devices I have. The issue is the hardware manufactures don't support it yet and the Linux market is very low, maybe when the Windows 10 support ends it might very likely change. Due to one major factor in economics because of the crisis, a lot of people around the world don't want to buy new computers or hardware. I hope Linux community just focus more on 1 distro to make it better for all new users, like Fedora or Ubuntu to make it more user-friendly.

I used to run Windows LTSB to avoid most of these issues. But at least I could patch it properly. The idea of gutting things and trusting a 3rd party w/o any sort of outside confirmation of the changes they claim to do, is absurd. Even with a solution such as LTSB, there were so many compromises from the norm, it is not a normal behavior nor suggested. But at least you can put a bit of faith in it from a corporate stable perspective. With all of the changes that Microsoft has adopted to with adding 3rd party software, and built in advertising, I feel we have no choice but to adopt a linux/VM instanced software environment.

These debloating tools aren't just because Microsoft includes a lot of bloat, it's also that they won't let you get rid of it without wrestling control from other more important functionality. If you don't want Edge, how do you kill it - as an example? It's really, _really_ hard. There is no reason for it to be this hard. Whenever I launch Windows, and tbh it's not often these days, I just keep running into the issue of feeling like there's a heap of trash all over my OS that are like cockroaches. They keep popping up all over the place and I can't get rid of them without going absolutely ham on the whole house (computer).

I’ve never had any issues with Ghost Spectre W11, but Muta does make the good point of “you don’t know what people put into the distributions”.

If you already have bad performance on Windows 10 or Windows 11, switching to Linux wouldn't help much. What would help though, is firing up some sort of system monitoring software, looking at your CPU/GPU usage, and realizing that if either one is hitting 100% and you have bad performance, it's time to give up software tweaking copes and just buy new hardware because you're bottlenecking. Modern Windows isn't as bad as people make it out to be, Linux isn't some flawless impeccable magical solution to all of humanity's woes, and by the end of the day, software gets more demanding, hardware doesn't get any extra performance, and you will have to spend money on a new PC, no matter which Windows or flavor of Linux you use.

Ghost specter is pretty good actually. I use it on my music laptop and i personally think it runs a lot better & smoother.

To be very honest, I would have loved for you to mention that AtlasOS is fully open source and that most things are customizable in the Atlas folder. Plus, only feature updates are disable under Atlas. Security updates are absolutely downloadable
