@@rachelm.a.4224 Yes, you are correct, the writers were commenting on how singers generally butcher the national anthem and put their own spin on it. When Homer fought Tatum, they skipped the anthem due to popular demand probably because of this reason.
@@mohitonon-alco4287 It's also because she's a musician and musicians tend to appreciate and find much more substance in this kind of vocal/singing stuff a lot more than other people
@@rightbehindyou9398 Also in early seasons she was the picture of A Goody Goody since she was to be the character foil of Bart's rebellious nature. She was a lot more Pro-Establishment in the early days.
I had an experience like this once. The national anthem lasted at least 10 minutes. I was with a veteran and even he sat down before the song ended. It took Francis Scott Key less time to wrire the poem than it did to finish the anthem that night!
@@oroontheheelsNot necessarily. They plan it out like that. When singers take an unusually long time to do a song, you can be sure it was planned and rehearsed that way. The reason it's not such a good idea to get creative in the particular context of a national anthem is because of the logistics. People are standing up, everyone wants the matter done with after the initial swell of enthusiasm, and there's a feeling with this kind of performance that it's not really about the performer, and people will resent you for making it about you. Buy of course artists are always keen to add a personal touch. So you'll always get stuff like this
And probably added some dancing scene taken straight from an old movie And repeated everything 5 minutes later Cause you know, the simpsons did it, so we are gonna do it tenfold and it will surely be as funny
Yeah, yeah, yeah we understood, Modern Simpsons and Family Guy bad, Old Simpsons good. I wished ppl wouldn't spin every second comment on Simpsons clips around that.
Ron Taylor voiced Bleeding Gums Murphy the other times. Unfortunately he couldn't make it for this episode so they got Daryl Coley. Wonder how his version would have sounded.
Oh say can you, I'm askin' can you see By the dawn's and the rocket's red glare The bombs bursting, shootin' off, poppin' off way up in the air And the home of the brave
On the DVD for this episode, the writers/producers said that some team played this as their seventh inning stretch entertainment until people complained about how horrifyingly disrespectful it was or something. The team switched to some other film clip, although one kind of wishes they had leaned in further and just played this as the national anthem at the start of the game.

Definitely a American tradition, though I thought it was exaggerated for TV. Colour me surprised at Seaworld, when everyone stands up for the anthem and claps for the military (who were encouraged to stand solo at the end).
@@yegmeshjwp America still can't pull its head out of its stupid cold war mindset. Our national anthem is way overplayed because we gotta show everyone we're "real" Americans and not some commie.
Whoa! Did anyone complain about Homer, Bart, and that other guy not putting their hands over their hearts? Apparently the 90s were a different time, anthem-wise. ... It's 11 o'clock. Do you know when the anthem will be over?
Me: Lisa? How you manage to stay like that through the whole thing? Lisa: Not only because of the nation but, because it's _Bleeding Gums Murphy!_ *_HE WAS MY HERO!_*
The founding fathers would be so pissed to learn an American in 2021 measures another citizen's patriotism by how much they love hearing the national anthem. It's a song.
