In this video, I break down how difficult it is for a student to come back from getting a zero in the grade book. I will also show you how skewed the grading scale is and how you can use a different practice when grading students.
The article I referenced for this video was written by Alexis Tamony, a math teacher. This is the video she did on the subject. • Video

This does not work if students are given 2 weeks to complete an assignment, and most of the students turn in nothing and those students should earn no points for the assignment.

Why would it be fair to give a student a 50 for turning in nothing while a student who does turn in something still get a 50? This isn’t real world….we can’t go to work and do absolutely nothing and still get 50% of her pay!

Both students should get a re-do. The 50%er didn’t learn the concepts, so they need to learn them to move on. The whole point of assignments is for practice and to make sure the students learned the concepts correctly.

One more thing, why not accept late work at 50% value? That takes care of the zero problems and demands responsibility to turn in late work as opposed to doing nothing and getting points.

We break down our categories. Only certain categories get an F. A zero in our assignment category doesn't drop their grade that much, only by 2 points. But I also give many chances to fix their zero. I also give extra credit to fix their grade. I have to follow our rules. I try not to fail any student unless they do nothing. I teach high school.
@KathleenJasperEdD
@KathleenJasperEdD 2 года назад
Categories definitely help. However, when you look at that number line, a zero is a K, not an F. The whole half of the grading scale is failing. So right away, the game is rigged and not in the students’ favor. I’m glad you try not to fail kids. If they do nothing, a 50 is still an F. I’m proposing a number line that is more fair. I also know every school/district has its own rules.

@@KathleenJasperEdD The problem is with students picking and choosing the assignments they will try hard on. Doing the easy assignments-not doing writing assignments, let’s say. Playing the game and passing. They don’t want to do tests, they just take a 50. They should get 0s on those assignments.
@DontStopCornPop
@DontStopCornPop Год назад
@Pelican Cove Beach I agree. All this does is teach students to do as little work as possible to pass. Playing numbers games and picking and choosing what assignments they want to do. It's a terrible way to prepare children for the real world. I really hate this "participation trophy" mentality of giving kids half credit for doing zero work. It doesn't matter that "50% and 0% are still both failing grades". A grade of 50 implies that you still actually did something when you didn't do anything. It's quite literally a lie, and as far as I'm concerned very detrimental to the educational development of children. If a child is having problems at home where they can't turn in assignments, then the school faculty needs to get involved and reach out to the parents. Parent/teacher conferences need to be held, and if the parents are not willing to cooperate then maybe social services needs to get involved. But just giving the students 50% so they can move them along is basically passing the buck, and literally setting them up for failure.

My wife is a teacher. According to her many students don't do their work and rely on last minute make up work to make their passing grade. High school kids have even told me they don't need to do the work, can socialize and play video games and pass their class and even play sports. This system is teaching students that they can get something for nothing by manipulating this system. Not good for our future.

We have a code of NTI - Not Turned In - which scores 0. When a student submits the missing item, their work is then scored and their grade resets. It can be a good tool to alert kids and parents to rectify a lapse.

I also cringe when a teacher tells me they give a zero. I am a second-year teacher and so exhausted, but give grace, extra time, re-teach, offer support, and sometimes remind as well as redirect before their assignment is heading south. Some students might take that for granted, but life situations, hunger, home struggles, poverty, lack of sleep, and undiagnosed cases of health issues can affect a kid's academic achievement. We do make mistakes as well and I have been given a break or a kind reminder, as well as a beat down from different types of principals and bosses. We can contribute to the negative domino effect of a student's life at school or encourage, support, tutor, or be the one teacher that takes time to listen to valid reasons they are not following directions or achieving. Of course there are kids who may disregard your expectations and they need to have consequences that match behavior, so find out the "why" of the infraction.

People are flipping out on Facebook right now about this concept being addressed in KC schools and the “dumbing down” of kids. Where would Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory grading policy come into this as an alternative option instead of the skewed grading scale for student work? Or should we not use S and U in middle and high school? Thank you Dr. Jasper. I have been a fan for a long time.
@KathleenJasperEdD
@KathleenJasperEdD 2 года назад
Satisfactory and unsatisfactory are typically used for behavior, so using an S or a U would be appropriate for grading behaviors like turning things in on time, coming to class on time, following directions. Usually, on the report card there is a place for the S or the U and then an explanation as to why you gave the student an S or a U. However, just an S or a U for an assignment is not enough to tell you or the student what he or she needs to work on. Therefore, I would use some sort of scoring for assignments. Thank you so much for being a part of my community. I really appreciate your watching and commenting on my videos.

I would also like to add that I saw a student in college talking with an English adjunt instructor (a woman who I liked as a person, but not so much as an instructor) want to become a teacher so that she could be in power over students. She wants to design difficult assignments and tests and create her own strict grading policies. Not because she wants to care about students and have an impact on their education, she is craving the power trip she would have. I was dumbfounded overhearing this and at a loss for words. Hopefully this girl never became a teacher or at least had a changed mindset if she did, but that can be doubtful. Why was she telling my instructor this? Because my instructor wasn't too far off from that. She often was candid about how evil she could be when giving out tests and wouldn't want to take them herself. She also spoke very inapproriately at times even though this was college. But I felt like I had to like her because she acted like she liked me and yes that encouraged me to do try to do very well in her two classes. But I saw many of her students either fail or barely squeak by. Some people just don't need to be teachers, and if you're against a 'no zero' policy, you could be one of them despite your rationale that doesn't really apply in the real world.
@daman0015
@daman0015 2 года назад
Dr. Jasper, you made some factual points! Like you mentioned, teachers think by giving students zeros they are teaching them a lesson when in reality it is not only numerically but psychologically detrimental to the student. It is hypocritical for teachers to preach that students are not defined by a score/grade, yet implement practices that do not align with that philosophy. It is petty and nit-picky and a way that teachers try to assert their authority. Good information. I will pass it along to my teacher colleagues for sure.

Thanks for the input. I both agree and disagree. If a student does a certain amount of work, then that student should be given credit for the amount of work completed (the example of the 6th grader who did all the work, but on the wrong side of the paper). So I agree that a zero for not following instructions-to-the-letter is excessive and whatever work was competed should receive commensurate credit. I disagree in that I believe zero work should receive zero credit, not 50%. How can I give a student half credit for doing nothing at all? That makes no sense and actually is an insult to the work done by the student who actually earned a 50% by doing at least half of the work. Your presentation equates unfair grading (the first example) with fair grading (the second example).

I have so many questions. This all seems great in theory. Now in public schools typically have two grades per week, per nine weeks. What about the kid get that scored a 50 on the test. Do they now get 75? Surely they don't get the same grade as a student that only put their name on the paper. What do we do about the student who attended 2 days of school in one semester? I
@KathleenJasperEdD
@KathleenJasperEdD 2 года назад
Hi Sharon, for the student who scored a 50, I would turn that test into a formative, reteach, and retest. Surely the student who tries and fails needs supports and scaffolds. For the student who only shows up 2 days a semester, I would fail that student, unless the student somehow turns in the work. Remember, a 50 is an F. It is failing. So for the student who worked and got a 50, I would work with that student and get him or her up. Also, we’re grading mastery of standards NOT attendance. We shouldn’t be grading behavior. If my students are scoring a 50 and they are trying, I do my best to see what I need to do to help that student get the support he or she needs.

I appreciate this video so much. I’m a first year teacher. Student teaching took place during virtual and concurrent. Our district/school only wants 9 grades in the grade book per nine weeks. I have been giving a zero for NHI (not handed in) as I was told. I just realized that many of my 6th graders and their parents didn’t even realize that meant an assignment was missing. And some only see the E in the grade book. Everyone is just trying to do their best…INCLUDING THE STUDENTS. They have been out of school for a year and a half. We all have so much to adjust to being back in person and one month into school isn’t going to make everything fall into place. I’m drowning in 160 students to teach and grade (6th and 8th grade science). I honestly don’t know how I can keep this up another day, but at least grading this way is fair and wont have a mob of angry parents coming after me when I’m already overwhelmed. I've had teachers of all sorts. Great teachers. Bad teachers. And some kinda in between. I remember my first zero ever. I was in the third grade and scored an 87 on a math test. The homework assignment then was to write out the missed math problems correctly a certain number of times. I failed to do this. It was a mishap, I forgot and that was my excuse. I got a zero on the test. 87 to 0. Third grade. No warning, no reprimand, no additional problems or sentences to write as a punishment. The only real lesson I learned from this was how to feel contempt for another human being and could care less about pleasing her as a student from that moment forward. Don't get me wrong, I wish this teacher well, it was a long time ago. BUT it didn't prevent me from having other academic mishaps in later years...in grade school, high school and college. I'm not saying there should never be consequences for students who don't meet all criteria. But that incident was truly unfair, and I'd be forced to believe that any teacher who disagrees probably gets a little satisfaction from assigning students 0s, and those teachers shouldn't be in the classroom in the first place.

Soooo.... THAT quarter, all grades cumulative with a zero in the mix, they get a 55. That's one quarter of the year. That's a lot of motivation to do better for the next quarter. Say they get a 55, a 75, a 75, and an 85 -- they finish the year with a 73, a nice average C, which represents the work they did that year. Many kids are average, and that's ok. Consistent low grades show where the student meets the benchmark. Stop moving the benchmark, our math and literacy scores are plummeting. I'll go the extra mile-- allow us to flunk a child and hold them back, especially in elementary. Then not only the child, but the parent learns to pony up effort, and it spares society HS seniors who can barely read. Parents do not 'parent' these days, and we teachers can't do it for them. You know what happens if you sign the wrong side of the check? You don't get the money. Follow the rules -- and we need to do this BEFORE high school. Your theory completely ignores kids who literally do nothing, then pile tons of half-hearted make-up work on the teacher at the end of the quarter. No. I do not agree, though I understand your compassion. Kids need to fail. If I continually pay the minimums on my credit cards, I will end up in a world of hurt supported by predatory lenders. That's like getting 50s for showing up.. they just feed me along a path of mediocrity at best, and kill any hope of hard self-discipline, leading to flourishing. I am a coach at high school band program who is a contracted employee. I was late to a rehearsal and I missed a rehearsal…and even with my assistant there instead of me, I was deducted $150 per rehearsal. I missed one performance because I was in the emergency due to a gallbladder attack. Even with a doctors note I was deducted $250 from my contract. No matter that my contract was for 6 months of work and my contract was less than $2,000. If I used their pay deduction as a scale for performances and rehearsal I would actually have made in the realm of $30,000. So yeah. If my kids don’t show I up I did get an 0…in fact I got less than a zero. Therefore if the school I worked at gave me negative on my contract I will give the student the same. It comes from the top down. And for the parents that complained to the administration about it, their kids who missed rehearsals and performances even with notes earned a 0.

If you do absolutely nothing you get absolutely nothing. This occurs in real life and it’s a lesson that students should learn early. So I will respectfully disagree, I even have situations when students with mental health issues will give me all the wrong answers and I will still pass them because I know their issues. But sitting there looking right at me and doing absolutely nothing?!! Yet they can press buttons on a cell phone? Uhh hell nah that’s a zero unless there is a medical or severe emotional issue going on then in my classroom it’s a zero although I try not to give them in extreme instances I do.

If a teacher gives a zero for a student writing on the wrong side of the paper, I can see dealing with a vindictive teacher. If a kid has 14 Bs and 1 zero, I’d check into the reason why that student got a zero. It would seem like an abnormal circumstance. If you have a student not turning in any work at all, and it’s consistent, then I’d give a zero.
@professionaldevelopment1824
Minimum Grading does not reward students; it simply eliminates 50 degrees of failure. Fifty percent is still an F, and an F is an F is an F. Minimum Grading is proportionate grading. A student moving from an F to a D has the same distance to cover as a student moving from a B to an A. Think of Minimum Grading as 0-4 grade points with each number representing a decile--50-100. The 100pt. scale is skewed.

This is one of the only countries that shows grades based on letters. 51% is passing in other countries, and that is all it matters. If the student has mastered more than 50% of the content then the student is passing the class, not letters, only percentages. Of course, a student who averages 90% in a class has worked harder than a student who only got 51%.

A 60 isn’t passing. A 60 is a D, which equals 1 on the 4 point GPA scale. You cannot graduate with a 1.0. You need at least a C (2.0) average. This video is about challenging our traditional ways of grading by making 50 the bottom. 50 is an F-failing.

I will be spreading this around to all the secondary teachers this fall. Please keep it public. Behavior does not equal standards; a 50% is not enabling. It's still an F! We call this minimum grading and proportionate grading. Most electronic gradebooks have a Min/Max scale option or districts can set minimum grading scales as a locked default, but better to get buy-in first.

I am kinda lost here but not from what you explained- that was done well. My misunderstanding is from what I remember report cards have 4 catagories when it comes to grades/behavior which would be the following -| Grade, Effort, Conduct, attendance |-.. Also, as I remember there is a specific location on every paper for a students name, and to write an awnser about a question so there is a set standard, but those standards are not what resembles the work correct? Should not following direction be a negitive mark to conduct, and not turning in work be a negitive mark towards effort. If also u have to grade that paper the student consistantly does not complete yes it should also be marked as a (25% with an I for incomplete). IMHO just giving a 0 on the topics you spoke on is just being lazy, and if there are just to many students then we should be lobying for more teachers, smaller room size not more pay for the teachers that can't handle the work load.. Anyway the American school needs to be reworked so it is more interactive, and so that it improves retention how our schools work does not work efficiently. FYI, the 25% is because the student only met 1 aspect of the total grade which would be attendance. Now if I was to show up to my job but not do my job I would be fired or disciplined so real world consiquence is a thing.

I'm lost with this. Life does not operate like this what so ever. Don't pay your bills and see what happens. Zero is u not paying ur bills so you have that grade. Now as a teacher I give kids time to make it up before it's too late before it's too late. I believe in some grace but this will not prepare them for college and work. Place readiness. I do look forward to a thorough conversation bout it.
@KathleenJasperEdD

The argument is not about consequences for lazy behavior. The argument centers around the fact that the American grading scale is lopsided. For example, 0-59 is an F. More than half of the grading scale is designated for F's, which is a poor design. Students only have 10 pints for Ds, 10 points for C, 10 points for Bs and 10 points for As. So when you give a student a 0, you are making it very difficult for students to redeem themselves because the student has to climb 60 points just to get a D, and they have to do that through averages not added points. I go over the math in the video. This starts at 4:18, if you're interested in looking at that. Paying your bills and getting an F on an assignment is comparing apples with oranges. They are not the same thing. I am not saying students should not have consequences for their behaviors, good or bad. I am saying that in order to compensate for the fact that more than half of the grading scale is designated to getting an F, effective teachers take that into account when assigning grades. Give the student an F for not doing the work. A 50 is still an F. But giving the student a 50 rather than a 0 helps to correct the lopsidedness of the grading scale. The argument is about math, not behavior.
@DontStopCornPop
@DontStopCornPop Год назад
@@KathleenJasperEdD But the whole point of the grading scale is to put a numerical value on your understanding of the material. It's supposed to be lopsided because if you understand only 59% of the material or less, then you don't understand the material adaquetly enough to move on. A zero is not a punishment, it's a reflection of the amount of effort that was put in on the students part (the ones that didn't turn in anything at all anyways). What you're proposing here is for teachers to essentially lie and pretend that students have at least half of the understanding of the assignment. You said to another commenter that if a student gets 3 out of 10 questions wrong on a quiz, they should still be given 50% even though they have demonstrated that they understand less than 50% of the material. It's one thing to try and be fair and cut the kids slack when appropriate, it's another to give them fake grades in order to pass them along. I'm sorry but I just can't agree with what you're saying here. I agree there needs to be education reform, I don't agree that giving kids credit for work they didn't do is the way to do it.

@@KathleenJasperEdD Thank you kindly. Sadly the math doesn't fully support your claim. this is presented wrong for starters. It interpretation is even if a student does not give effort give them something. That's a main reason why this is invalid. Being a math teacher it's always about partial credit points of what they can demonstrate. I am always amazed that even the weakest student can demonstrate a skill. Grace within reason is needed for them. Its foolish to allow students to turn in work the last few days of the grading period. Had this would have a better presentation of give zeros only no effort given and give grace within reason I would be sold. @SensoryTheater07 it's not about credit, it's about a bad scale. It's heavily skewed. If you work on a PhD, and have to gather stats, you'll see that no research allows that much of a skew. It's very lopsided. So don't give grades for free, but don't keep using a system that doesn't give fair grades. And let's be honest, it's not making American kids any smarter. The math is bad. ❤

I think this is a perfect example of what not to do. Yes mathematics is math and there is consequences for actions. This is a part of doing school, nothing to see here. Giving grades is however a red line that no educator should ever cross. Yes for most schools 59% and under is an F. Its been that way for a long time and it is not broke. However awarding points where none is earned really does send the wrong message. Instead of going to the extremes, why don't we instead just use common sense. Didn't format the mathematics problem right and you were told to do so, yep its a zero and its a consequence of your not doing what was expected. Didn't sign your work, yep a 0, and that by the way is as it should be. How does a teacher know that work is yours without your name? On the other hand teachers, what do you really want? Do you want the student to practice their skills, then give them the opportunity to correct the behavior and give them the grade they earn. Yes it means grading something a second time, it also means they are showing you what they know. Its a much better system then either giving a grade that wasn't earned or throwing out a system that has arguably served us well when you consider that we have been among the most literate and innovative people for decades. That later turn in also means they spend more time on your skill and maybe that serves as a refresher before the standardized test. My .02$.

I am sorry but I do not agree. it would be like giving a participation medal, is giving the irresponsible student a price for free that the responsible ones have worked hard for. I agree with having consideration with the ones that tried and did the work but not for the ones that chronically late, don’t do the work or just are lazy. And yes, Your example of real life is wrong, there are real consequences in life, not silly stuffs like being late to a meeting, try to be late to a court hearing or a doctors appointment or going 85 miles over 30. Starting grading at 50% is creating irresponsible citizens, but having consideration for an eventual issue is just "humanitarian" in an exceptional case by case bases, it is never fair because it creates an advantage over the ones that do things right.

No, it is not unfair to the top performers because if a student gets a 90, they will receive that grade and the grading scale is not overly skewed in that area of grades (A, B, and C) but it is highly skewed and rigged agiant students when it comes to grades of F and below so a score of 50 minumum assures that some justice is served to that part of the scale. Speaking of the real world, doctors and judges more often than not do offer flexibity and options when you fall short.

I'm not a teacher, but those who give zeros for BS things like writing the assignment on the back side of a page should be fired. Likewise, administrators who expect teachers to give partial credit for zero work should also be fired. How did 50 become the new zero? When I was in school, if an assignment had 20 questions, each one was worth 5 points. You had to answer 1/2 of the questions correctly to get a 50. Late assignments were penalized or not accepted at the discretion of the instructor, but most actually dropped your lowest grade to mitigate that one "bad day" that everyone has. This participation trophy mindset is exactly why the snowflake Gen Z can't cope with life. Getting a zero for not handing in your work is certainly painful, but if they want to pass, they won't do it more than once.

I've seen students not pass in literally any work, at all, and still end up passing by making up work at the end of the year. Kids who don't pass in work deserve to fail. Being anal and harsh over how kids do their work is messed up and wrong, but kids who put in absolutely zero effort are passed along by schools and are set up for complete failure in the future.
