This is a follow up to the Please Stop Giving Students Zeros in the Grade Book video. Many of you had strong opinions and important questions about what I discussed previously. This video is a response to that.
If you have not seen Part 01, please watch that one first before watching this video. Here is the link:

Very thoughtful points and wish I could try them since I work at an adult school for students who did drop out or they are still in high school and have switched from their zooned one so the tactics you mention would be of great support to them.

When and how would I find time to reteach and reassess?

That depends on how many students didn’t get the concept. It doesn’t make sense to move onto the next chapter/lesson if the majority of your class didn’t get the concepts or the skills. I would take another day or take another two days to reinforce those skills. Then you can reassess using observation, another test, or writing assignment. It doesn’t have to be another huge chapter test. You can also just reassess the standards they missed. If it’s just a small group of students who didn’t get the standards, you can differentiate instruction by using small group strategies with those kids. Then you can allow the kids who did get the concepts to move onto other parts of the chapter or the next phase. Thanks for watching 😊

I have done this with my students actually slowed down and reteached for a week and I still have students who do not understand the concepts. What do I do then?

@@Jacee191 can you be more specific about what you’re teaching and the situation? It’s difficult to just give a blanketed answer to that question. What do you teach? What grade level? What concept are they not getting? How have you attempted to teach it? Have you asked them where the barriers are for them (sometimes we forget to ask students)? How many kids are not getting it? Are they the same kids over and over? You could just move on and fail them and worry about the kids who do get it. I certainly don’t recommend that. You could keep trying with them, which is what I do recommend. However, you’ll have to change your tactics/style/approach.
