Pleasing results (part 2) Kodak Scanza 35mm slides

"Major error" the file sizes indicated as gigabytes are actually megabytes! Generations of old home movies, 35mm slides, VHS video tape, mini DV tapes and more were produced from the 1950's thru the year 2000.
Before this is all lost or discarded it should be transferred to the digital media. I am producing a series of RU-vid video's to show how this is can be done.

Anthony Wheeler I recently purchased the Kodak Scanza to digitize my family’s photo slides and negatives. Upon arrival I found that Kodak had released a new version called the Kodak Slide N Scan in February. So I returned it for the newer model. However upon using the new device I discovery it takes significantly worse photos than the Scanza. So I returned it the Slide n scan, so I could get the Scanza back. I wonder if all all Slide N scans have this issue as the Scanza seems superior to its new younger brother counterpart.

My daughter gifted me the Kodak Scanza last Christmas so I can scan all of my mother's and grandmother's old 135mm slides and share them with family members. Your Part 1 and 2 videos have given me the confidence to give it a try! Thank you!

I like the way you say pleasing results. That is what many of us are looking for. They don't have to be the "best quality" especially when we have 20,000 to scan.

@@dahdigital1 Thanks. I just received my new Kodak Slide N Scan Digital Film Scanner. I think it may be a little easier to use and I do like that I can add a date (the picture was taken) . Will fit into my Google Photos nicely with date added. It eliminates another step of adding dates at a later date. Google Photos said I have over 47,000 pictures on file. Some are duplicates because when I add them, they end up being added again from the computer. I would estimate I have about 20,000 more slides and negatives to process. I have no children and hope I live long enough to finish making all picture files digital. Would like to give them to the people the pictures are of. Often I wonder if it all is worth the effort?

You are a fabulous teacher! Clear, concise & thorough. I too, am trying to digitize 50 years of slides! The Scanza manual was little help getting started. You came to the rescue & cleared all of my confusion. I have now started the process, and learning that I have a lot more to learn. Looking forward to more of your great teaching! Thank you!

REALLY nice job, Mr. Wheeler! Very clear and concise...your videos plus some additional research prompted me to order up a Scanza. After rewatching the video and reading the comments, it appears that a 14 megapixel scan comes in at ~1.5MB (lol, NOT GB!) and a 22 megapixel scan comes in at ~4.5MB, correct? If that's the case, then a 128GB card might be overkill for most folks. If I did my math right, on a 128GB card, you could save 85,000+ 14-megapixel scans and 22,000+ 22-megapixel scans. Unless someone was saving their own personal Library of Congress, a 16 or 32GB card might be a better option. ;-) Finally, those saved scans will be in JPEG format (as opposed to RAW or TIFF) and as such, there will be limited post-processing options. Although it appears the Scanza has some "built in" editing features (too "one size fits all", in my opinion), it seems to me that mounting the SD card with the saved scans in your computer, and then using a photo editor like Snapseed, Google Photos, etc. might be a better option to do some "tweaking". Not ALL the saved photos, mind you, but certainly the "best of the best". Cheers!

I own a Scanza, and have scanned over 500 color slides and a few black & white negatives. I rate it as pretty good. As a perfectionist, I guess I am looking for something more professional, but I don't know what to buy, so for the time being I am using the Scanza. I would not describe the scratch and dust removal as "miraculous" -- I am seeing very clear scratches on some scans that I would not expect to see if the software was really that good. Generally I am pleased with the overall performance, but one must understand that with very thin or very dense emulsions, it is not so great. The dynamic range is lacking -- details can be lost in very bright or dark portions of the transparency being scanned. For example, in a night shot where there is bright signage (letters on a white backlit sign), the scan shows a total whiteout -- you cannot read anything on the sign. If you hold the slide up to the light, you can clearly see there is lettering. On the scan, nothing, no matter how you adjust the brightness settings on the scanner. This problem is rare, but it does show the limitations of the scanner. I would rate the device 3.5 out of 5 stars.

OK, good information. I however personally rate the scanner at 4.5

Thanks for the great review. I have a lot of 16mm slides that are mounted in a standard 35mm cardboard mount. The 16mm negative is about 1/4 the size of a 35mm negative. Do you have any idea if the Scanza can digitize the 16mm slides?
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 4 года назад
Tom Huff, If the 16mm is mounted into a standard 35mm cardboard mount, I would think it could be digitized. 35mm slides are commonly positive film. If this is negative film you need to tell the Scanza.

Excellent video. One question Anthony. I have a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED purchased years ago but just recently tried to use it on an old PC with Windows XP which is required for the enclosed software. It is very slow and the results not too good. Have you compared the results of the Kodak Scanza to the Nikon device? I know on your video you say the Kodak has resulted in the best results of other devices you have tried. Also, I understand there is scan software by third parties now available for the Coolscan that will run on Windows 10 and wondered if I would get better results with more modern software and which one you might recommend. Given the ease of using the Kodak Scanza and the apparent good results, I am inclined to buy one and put the Coolscan back on the shelf but since I have an investment in it, I might be willing to give it another try. Another question, can you recommend a photo processing software to enhance scanned slides or digital photos that is not too complicated to use? Thanks.

Thank you for the video. I think the sizes you put on screen (1.49GB and 4.4GB) are wrong. My apologies if I am wrong, but that seems very excessive. My assumption is that it should be megabyte not gigabyte.

Does it crop the image at all? Or do you get the entire area including the slide edges and corners? I have used the wolverine scanner and it crops the image slightly and also adds a lot of grain (digital noise)
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 4 года назад
KensAeroden, In all the 35mm slides I have scanned I don't remember noticing any cropping or digital noise. I have tried other brands and scanners. I can't imagine finding anything I would be more satisfied with. I have no ties with Kodak, " however I would let them pay me for promoting their Kodak Scanza.

Hi there. Thanks for the great video. I'm almost convinced to buy one of these, but have one question. I have a LOT of slides (not negs) to scan (about 15,000). Can you give me a ball-park estimate of how long it would take to scan 100 or 1000 slides ? Obviously you can't be exact, but it will help me decide to make a purchase, or not. If I want to make a color alteration to ALL slides (I've heard there tends to be a blue tint to the scans) can I set this and then have the correction work for all slides I scan ? Thanks.
@dahdigital1
@dahdigital1 3 года назад
brohestedbs, if you select and make a color adjustment it will stay until you turn off or re adjust. If I were doing this many I might take a week or two. I need regular breakes and sometimes naps.

Have you scanned 110 as well? The wolverine scanner stretches the image by about 20 percent. It can't retain the 110 film proportions. Thanks.

KensAeroden, No, I have scanned only 35mm color slides. But that's interesting thanks for the post.
@KensAeroden
@KensAeroden 4 года назад
Anthony Wheeler the wolverine scanner does not give you the entire image area. It crops all slides and negatives just about 5-10% all the way around. Frustrating because sometimes my subject fills the frame and I would loose a little bit. It's like how the view finder in a 35mm or digital SLR on some cameras only show you up to 95% of lens coverage.
