To me the difference between Plex and Emby (And Jellyfin) is very similar to iOS and Android (With Emby and Jellyfin being Android and Plex being iOS) iOS is polished and not very customizable and not having all the features but the features they do have working very well while Emby and Jelly being more feature rich and customizable but not quite as easy and polished.

You literally add content the same way for both platforms. Add Library -->Go to Directory--> Done. Emby/Jellyfin is easy to use.

I've tried them all and emby is by far my favorite. Have it installed on a synology ds718+ and on a qnap 473a and it runs good on both but better on the more powerful qnap. However, I like the synology layout better and may buy a more powerful synology in the future.

You are discussing only video films - 1/4 of the capabilities of Plex, but it works with videos, music, photographs and (!) audiobooks! I find it convenient to use PLEX to store my audiobook collection.

I am a longtime user who loves Plex for most applications, the biggest shortcoming I have found is Audiobooks. I use Audiobookshelf for this, it seems to handle an Audiobook Library far better.

would be cool to see Plex media server and transcoding performance of the NVIDIA Shield TV (the stick or the Pro model), I've been wondering if the Ryzen in the newer Synology wouldn't be a problem for me as a Plex user if my Shield could just do all the work for Plex

Thanks for this comparison! But WHERE is the promised link to the shown comparison? There is only wrong one. I just hope, someone manages soon to bypass Plex's recognition of Hetzner hosting so I don't have to move whole setup to emby and teach family how to use new interface :/

How should one set up the directories so I can load my videos in one folder, audio books, in theirs so they can be accessed by Plesk, Emby, or other application? I think I'd like to use both Plesk and Emby for different reasons. And which is best for sharing content?

HQAudio was a big fail for me with Plex. Multiple calls to support who mostly blew me off as they did not seem to care about HQAudio, (I'm a sound/recording engineer). I switched to Emby and could not be happier. A big thanks for the review. Emby deserves more attention.

Would be awesome is Synology offered a optional graphics card upgrade to their models.. is there any less 4k transcoding power needed with Emby or Jellyfin vs Plex? Or is that identical across the 3x software options?

great video and explanation on both platforms will need to try emby see how I can get use out of it but think I'm a plex man

Is there any benefit using plex and jellyfin together.. im still making sense of it. If There's less transcoding power needed for jellyfin then could do 4k on jelly and rest in plex..

I prefer Emby, I love the option for my movies posters to have dvd case look.. there are other reason too.. however, I find Plex far easier to share my content with family

The "playback info" you can see it at 14:15 of the video has your nerd info on plex.

I love Emby but I hate all their apps except for my android phone. The roku app and apple TV app are trash compared to Plex. I hate how hard it is to navigate the Emby app in comparison on all the devices I own. I like that Plex one click to the left and all my movies and shows are right there.

Imagine that you are trying to be a Plex concurrent, and to connect to your server, you need to learn what is https, reverse proxy, docker, how to get a DNS and probably other things depending on the configuration, and for all that, there is not a single clear tutorial, and even the community on discord does not help you... while at plex, you connect to your account and that's it.
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77
@RogerioPereiradaSilva77 Год назад
On the other hand, many of the things one can get for free with very little or no effort on Jellyfin are hidden behind a paywall on Plex and I know that most people are getting tired of paying for subscriptions when they don't have to. Having to pay to be able to use my own hardware for transcoding?!?!? GTFO! Remote access to a media server, while handy, I'd be willing to bet that not many users care about and the ones that do can work it out with something like Tailscale or ZeroTier in no time, again with the right price tag. It is true that Plex still has the lead when it comes to ease of use but the gap is closing fast and they know it.

Imagine not being able to watch your own content when your ISP shits the bed and there's an outage. Easier doesn't always mean better. The latter setup works fine when the internet is out, and works as well as Plex does for sharing outside the home. I run the LSIO containers for all three side by side, with my own domain and the LSIO swag container as my reverse proxy, unless you have the technical knowhow to disable authentication on your LAN, which also basically gives anyone in your home admin access to your server.
@nlrz313
@nlrz313 Год назад
@@praetorxyn So you admit yourself that you need good networking knowledge, among other things, to run emby or jellyfin like plex. There is no question of a breakdown here, everything works (if your ISP is down that often, change it). The only problem comes from the fact that with plex competitors, if you don't know about it, it just works locally and in this case, it's no better than VLC and an external hard drive.
@praetorxyn
@praetorxyn Год назад
@@nlrz313 No. It’s called learning. I didn’t know shit about networking or Docker, and I learned what I needed to know in the span of an hour. It doesn’t matter how often it happens. When the internet is out, your first thought is “Well, I can’t watch Netflix etc., I’ll watch my own stuff on Plex.” Then you find out Plex won’t let you watch your own shit on your own network because it can’t phone home. This hits basically everyone that uses Plex eventually, and is reason enough in and of itself to spend the small amount of time looking at a web page, copying and pasting Docker Compose snippets, and reading the documentation for 2 minutes so you understand how to make it apply to your setup.

I've been running the LSIO container for Plex for ages, for Jellyfin for about a year, and emby for a few months. I mostly use Jellyfin, but I like being able to compare. I'll probably pick up Emby Premier on Black Friday. $20 off isn't much, but I don't exactly need it either.
