You make a good point about it being a lot of money for a single system option. It's up against things like the Retrotink 2x that gets almost identical results over S-video and can still do the smoothing if you so wish. However the Retrotink 2x also works with composite, component, rgb, pal and you can plug multiple systems in to it. It's one box for all your systems and is substantially cheaper than the Eon. The Eon is also a whopping 50% more expensive at current pricing. The Eon pricing brings it very close to to that of a Ultrahdmi kit or OSSC with RGB amp. So if you are like me and happy to do a bit of soldering then there is defiantly better available for similar money. On pure value and performance the EON is defiantly lagging the field.

There are others like it that cost much less. There's a different version that costs about a hundred dollars, and another that's about $120 (it plugs into both the analog and digital ports, using the analog merely for stability). Personally myself, I never want to buy the component cables due to their price, and I have an S-video cable that makes it look really good on my HDTV. The component cables will probably go down in price over time if these things become super popular.

@bunkernuts6293
@bunkernuts6293 5 лет назад
It's most likely that price due to the demand of being able to play older consoles on your HDTV without any expensive upscaling kits and the time it took to design the hardware to work with the N64 and output a stable HD video signal without any lag. $150 is still a bit high though as you can buy a slightly older 720p TV with AV/S-Video and an N64 cable that supports S-Video which is what I use, but then again I'm not sure how much that would cost you. Still nothing wrong with a decent CRT which those are going a bit up in price as well either due to failure or because of demand from retro gamers.

I really don't understand. There are generic S-Video to HDMI converters that work fine, they convert to 720p or 1080p. And they cost 10$. Why should you play so much?
@Junkman444
@Junkman444 5 лет назад
If you don't have anything to compare the cheap converter to you will not know how good it can be. I used to think the same thing, but then I got a RetroTink-2 and never looked back - Clean, bright and works well with my 7800 (oh so much better), SNES, PS1 and N64 . Those cheap upscalers can also add a bit off lag and it matters in the complicated chain of technology. $150 is just too high a price point considering.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 4 года назад
The main thing that bugs me about those is they treat a 240p signal as if it's 480i, deinterlacing unnecessarily (actually adding artefacts in). The lack of sharpness and the colours being altered is annoying too, but certainly liveable. Whereas the tearing and fringing that occurs from unnecessary deinterlacing is soooo distracting (it is visible in this video when he gets the star in Mario 64, presumably his capture card has the same logic). I actually bought the component cable for my Wii instead of the composite one after my 13" CRT TV got replaced with a 19" LCD TV, just to eliminate that tearing and combing (by setting the Wii to 480p, it would line double the 240p games or something, while set at 480i it would output proper 240p, and only the component cable enabled 480p mode)
@IronicTonic8

Personally I like the Retrotink 2x more than this. It does everything the Super 64 does, but it supports multiple video input options so you can use it with a wider variety of consoles. I use it with SNES, N64, PS2 and Gamecube.

Yes, modern TVs generally dropped S-Video a long time ago, but it's important to note that most wouldn't work acceptably well even if they had the connection because they don't properly handle 240p. This is still a problem for composite video and is much of the reason why devices like this or RetroTink 2X exist. Those $20 analog to HDMI scalers and those $30 Hyperkin/Pound/Xtreme cables all have the same issue with 240p where they deinterlace a non-interlaced image and ruin 60hz effects in the process. On that note, I'm surprised to see such a focus on how it compares to UltraHDMI instead of the more-comparable RetroTink 2X.

The Eon is comparable to a Retrotink 2x using a S-video cable. Or at least the few people I know what have used the Eon and the Retrotink 2x have said there basically identical. If this is accurate and i suspect it is UltraHDMI has a cleaner sharper image than this. You hit a wall with S-video conversion as you cant surpass the N64s digital to analog conversion. This is one reason high end RGB upscallers such as the OSSC are also superior in this aspect. You do have to modify your system to output RGB first though as it's not supported natively.

Nope. It pulls S-video from the console only. Even on an RGB-modded N64

It seems like Eon has a recurring problems with fat huge connectors being limited by their size. Their Gamecube adapter needlessly takes up the analog port for no good reason too which is a problem if you need analog audio for, say, using with a monitor. And $150 is more than double what I paid for the Dell 2007FP I play N64 games on.

Two words "DAC" "Analog". I give these types of items a hard pass. At least for the GC one the digital output port is used (even if it's just for video)

This product does not need to exist. its 3x the cost it should be considering it only displays 240p at S-video quality. You are better off having your N64 RGB modded for a fraction of the cost then use a Scart cable with HDMI adapter. or best yet just hook up the N64 with standard cables to an old CRT tv. anything looks better than this on a modern LCD LED TV.

Great review! Good examples on the screen to show the difference in noise between composite and s-video. I already have a retrotink2x "www.retrotink.com/" which in my mind is more versatile; but, this is hands down the easiest plug and play solution out there in my mind.

I use S-Video with my HDTV, the cables are really quite cheap and look pretty clear on the screen.

@@ians_parks Yeah... but when he mentioned that it was using the S video signals.. i would then just use the retrotink 2x... which does the same smoothing option, and even has a passthrough function...
