Our plum head is a psychopath as he’s a very unpredictable biter, especially when startled. He’s tame, but as a younger bird he was a bit of a chewer, which I eventually got him out of. He is a very good talker, which for example the dog would obey when told by the parrot to ‘sit’. They are also an intelligent bird. Our bloke, for example if given a piece of bread that is a bit hard or dry will go and dunk the bread in his water bowl to soften it up and like a lot of larger parrots here in Australia he holds large chunks of food in his left foot to eat. I’ve had a number of different parrots in the past like cockatiels and princess parrots, both of which were lovely, affectionate birds and had generally docile temperaments. After my experience I probably wouldn’t recommend plum heads even though they are a quite bird, however it may be just this individual.

We have had our plumhead for 19 years now, he was a baby when we got him so he is about the same in age. In the petstore he was sold for 70€ (~$85) as an alexandrian parrot ^^. Ours trusts the one who interacts the most with him also the most. But he still interacts with everyone if they have something he wants, as soon as that something isnt interesting anymore then he is of to his prefered person again. As far as petting is concerned, he doesnt like it.. As far as noise... he is LOUD, he never misses to greet the one he likes the most, and most of the time greets everyone else. Funny enough when he sees strangers, he sometimes is pretty loud and sometimes doesnt say a thing. He is pretty playful but likes to destroy things the most, everything he can chew on will most likely be chewed on at some point, every edge of a sofa will be targeted if he happens to be around it ^^. Talking to him is something he likes and also got incorporated in his normal singing pattern, but in a very birdly manner (doesnt really sound like talking ^^). I hope he is reaching 30+ years in age as i like him a lot, he is still very active, flying and running around with his beak still in a dark black and his featthers still as vibrant as before.

These are awesome birds. I have had two now. My last plum head was a rescue. He was an awesome bird and was incredibly sweet. We had his cage in the living room and he was handled by everyone in the family and he remained tame to everyone in our family and would even interact with strangers that came into the house until he we lost him a little over a month ago. I just picked up my second plum head yesterday. He’s a 10 month old boy and although he was very nervous yesterday and this morning, by this evening her would chatter away with my children and myself. He doesn’t want to be touched yet but he already is starting to interact. From my experience with my last plum head, he loved to hang out with us on our hands or our shoulders but he did not like to be pet. I feel these birds are a great fit for a person or a family with older kids who want to hang out with their bird and interact with them but understand that the bird is not going to want to “cuddle”.

This was an awesome video! Out of every parrot/parakeet the Plum Headed Parakeet was always the one that caught my eye. Of all the videos on them I've seen this one was by far the most informative one! Keep up the great work! Not sure if you remember but I requested a video on these birds. And all I can say is it did not disappoint! Thanks! :D

This contradicts almost everything I have read and experienced myself. Granted, three years ago I couldn't find much info on the birds in English, but what I found has proven true so far. -Plum Heads are not cuddly birds. I got Two-Feathers (my plum head) as soon as he was weened, and I'm disabled so I spend plenty of time with him. They want you in the room and enjoy your presence, but they do not like being touched. He will take food from my mouth and sit/nap on me, but opens his beak and flies away if I try to touch him. -These are aviary birds. Many of the resources I was able to find were breeders, and the majority of them lamented on how these beautiful birds were not popular (or even good) pets. A big reason was because the birds did very poorly in cages; to the point that many would just refuse to thrive and even die. They have very long tail feathers and need to be allowed to fly. My bird has two rooms to fly freely in, only going into a cage at night, and his feathers are still bent in places from it. -That beauty has a cost. And it's food. Resources actually recommended that 1/3 of their diet be fresh fruits and vegetables, with the other 2/3 being high quality seed. And boy, does my bird eat. He spends most of his day sleeping and eating, with the occasional high speed zoom around the room, and a good nightly scream. Don't get me wrong, I love Two-Feathers and would like to see the plum head become more well known. But these birds are most definitely not for everyone. Also, mine never went through a bluffing stage; not one I noticed at least.

That's for making this video.. Just purchased a DNA male plum head parakeet who is still a baby. And yes, very rare to find, especially where I am from I Ontario Canada. Purchased my boy for $1200, which is prices for parrots in Canada are double then what people pay in America.

Plum head mum here from the UK. I have two rescue boys called Dandelion & Burdock & although I love them both dearly they are NOT a parakeet for beginners (I have had keets for 40 years!) They are affectionate but very nervous & not easy to handle. You have to allow them to do their own thing at their own pace. They are more suited to an aviary than a cage. My boys share a macaw specialised cage which they only use at night. Dandelion is very affectionate, highly intelligent & possesive who will screech if I leave the room. Burdock is much more laid back & reserved, & both don't like to be handled too much. They will sit on my head, shoulders, knee & even my laptop, but this has to be on their terms. Dandelion is an avid talker but Burdock is not. Although these are stunningly beautiful birds you have to have a heap of patience with them, spend plenty of time with them, give them plenty of play things & follow a very varied diet of various seeds & fresh fruit & veg. My boys adore podded peas which they go nuts for when in season. Both love hand feeding. The upshot is that if someone is looking for a bird that is very easy to handle, plum heads should be avoided as would be owners would quickly get very frustrated at the nervousness of these lovely birds. Sorry. Just being honest. Good video though & loved to see the baby enjoying a cuddle!

Got a 5 year old couple and i concur... they are the BEST pet parrot to have as a beginner or advanced... Easy to care, friendly, quiet and funny... Did you know that when you bottle feed a plum headed baby, (in order to tame it and make it a pet..) their iris grow as big as the whole eye, in order to be very loveable and do not hurt them... just like human babies! ;-) Thank you for this video... loved it.. well done! Hi, really enjoying your species videos! Any chance you can tell us about the Gold conure (or queen of bavaria conure)? It seems they are an amazing species, a lot quieter than the other large conures (sun, jandaya) and the same loving personality, quite well suited for a family. I just can't decide on a species I still have 3 on my list 🙈
@Fivesaflock

I describe Golden Conures as Velcro birds lol. They extremely sweet, but they will never leave you, like Physically never leave you. It's all fun and games until you try to put them away lol. But I love them.

@@Fivesaflock I am falling for the species I must admit 🙈, won't be til next year so still have time to decide. I don't know if you give that info I don't recall but could you recommend bar spacing for a golden conure? I've found a 1inch bar spacing cage second hand and I'm now worried it might be too wide.. Seems 1inch max for large conures is OK but I'm not convinced..

Cape parrots are AMAZING pets imo. I want to review them but they're very rare parrots. Working on getting my hands on one when I can. But a lot of poicephalus parrots are somewhat similar in personality, main differences being how likely of a one person bird they can be.

Do you have any advice for a new plum head owner? Our little girl has been home a month and does not want to come out of her cage. No interest in interacting when she comes out either.. just wants to fly and go back into the cage.
@yellowmango698
@yellowmango698 3 года назад
@@ode2chumly1 yes i can definately help you with that! I also had a plum headed male parakeet but in an accident he just flew away during flight training !! 😂 ok so first of all do not try to get her out of her cage because its her first month and she might not be so comfortable right now! First hand feed her for a month and then take her out then u will see the difference . Secondly these parrots like to sit on an height where no one can reach! So this is a big problem but your parakeet is still a baby one or not an adult so you can make a nice bond with her and you can make her stick to you!! Like you can pett her or reward her whenever she does something which is friendly this is the only trick and as time passes your bird will be fully tamed so first giver her about 1 month more , then try hand taming after that flight training indoors. Make sure you have a safe environment. Then start rewarding her and spend time with her ! And your parakeet is gonna love you!!
@yellowmango698
@yellowmango698 3 года назад
So for now keep your bird in her cage . And just try to hand tame her inside of the cage then outside. This trick worked for me !!!!! Also if you give her apple she is gonna love it ! Try feeding apples to her from your hands and yes one thing is very very important that if you will hurry and she somehow gets spooked out from you , she will never be able to gain your trust because they have this type of nature with is very baad. I can say this because i have a lot of experience with these parakeets ! I have one female plum headed parakeet that was spooked out by my sister and now its been 3 years and she is still scared of me !
