Warning! Secret plumber info in this video. After failing to install the well water filtration system on our home I have totally redeemed myself by replacing the well bladder tank without proper supervision. And it totally works. It's well-tank replacement for dummies. If I can do it anybody can. It cost a small fortune to hire a plumber on the filter system so I saved some dough on the well tank install by doing it myself.

Im a service plumber in rural Canada, I do a ton of this stuff, of course we gotta keep it all in a basement, cant be outside or it would freeze 11 months of the year. We use union style tank tees which allows us to tighten everything to the tank tee first, then attach to the tank with the union, so that way you don’t run into the problem you did with the pressure switch. Nice work though sir!

Hey man look nothing wrong with DIY, I fully support people learning how to fix their own wells. I really want them to know how to do it right and not buy the wrong cheap products. The water worker tanks are not good and I have removed many before 2 years use due to failure. The tank tee is cool and all but not needed and can be done with tee's inline for taps for less cost. You should really try airing up the tank first and check for water left in the tank before you toss it. Water can get behind the diaphragm and cause tank to be "Waterlogged" which is the leading cause of pump failure! Of course making sure your check valve is good along with pressure switch and settings is also very important. Never put a ball valve between your pump and psi switch as it absolutely useless and can cause problems. Turing off the pump is all that's needed to stop water flow back to well during service. Someone can turn that valve off while pump is running and the pump will be damaged or blown off drop pipe. The only reason one would be there is due to having a flow well but even then a union is better to just disconnect it. If your going to use glue from homedepot don't use the blue glue its very weak, instead get Fusion its way better! You won't need primer at all and is one step so a DIY person won't mess it up. Trust me a 25 year veteran well guy who loves the stuff for most my glue work and repairs. When your timing your well's cycle time what matters is not how long it takes to turn on but how long to go off. Your cycle time of the pump from on to off is what affects the life of your pump. Final thoughts you did a good job just get you a Amtrol or AO smith tank when that one fails and lose the blue glue. Take it Easy man! Casey

FYI, there are not supposed to be any shutoff valves between the pump and the pressure switch. That can cause some serious issues if someone cuts it off when the power for the well is on. It will over-pressurize the pipe between the valve and the pump. Also, the only check valve needed is at the top of the pump. My dad was a well driller and I would help him out on service calls and drilling wells a lot.

Unless your schedule 40 pvc plastic pipe has been exposed to sun light till it has become brittle there is no way your well pump will build enough pressure to burst the pipe lucky to get 80 to 100 psi. If pvc pipe is in good shape it will hold about 300psi cold water hot water around 70psi at 130 degrees.

I went with exactly the same 85 gallon tank 24 years ago. My aim at the time was water reserve. All this time we never understood the less bladder wear & tare theory. Thanks, HAXMAN. PS I grew up in Florida. The problem we faced, leaving pressure tank, pump, filters, outdoors was FLOODING, almost yearly due to hurricane side swiping. Also, our fresh water was always warm in summer and so cold in summer no water-heater lasted more then 2 years. (cracked glass innards) Tired of 'bording-up', we moved to Oregon. I traded horse hay for a working water-heater 32 years ago, still working to this day, despite servicing a teen-age girl, now long gone.

Think of using a union fitting when you have an obstruction. Yes in the South Mid-Georgia and below the well tanks are mostly installed outdoors. I insulate my above ground pipes and use a heat tape for the one or two cold months. Every where else there are small well sheds with a light socket to be on during the cold days.

As a well service technician we have all gotten to the switch and realized it would not screw into the tank tee! for lack of clearance. Another option is to loosen the tank tee, install the switch with your original 4" nipple then rotate the tank tee back into horizontal position. Problem solved. This is an option when you find yourself 50 miles from a store.

For my first 20 years in this house, my 1.5 hp single phase 220VAC well pump had been burning the contacts of those cheap HomeDepot/Lowe's pressure switches every 5 years. I had enough of that replacement pain so I made the HD/Lowe's pressure switch merely control the coil of a DuraKool two pole mercury switch BF2-7027 with a 30A rating. No problem with relay contact burn out for 15 years now. I bought it some 10 years ago but never used it. Paid about $50 IIRC back then, but I see they now cost $400+. FJB.

The reason for a bladder in the tank is to stop the air from being absorbed into the water. Old well tanks had no bladder, and occasionally you had to add air to the tank. You could have gotten by for years if you didnt mind pumping additional air in. Shut off the power to the pump, open a tap somewhere, and pump in air until the tank is about half filled by volume...more or less. Then power it back up. Depending on your water you might have to do that once or twice a year, but it's cheaper than a new tank.
@martyscharff763
@martyscharff763 10 месяцев назад
In the older days the pressure tank had an air siphon about half way up the tank with a check ball. Every time the pump kicked on it sucked air in the top of thr tank. It made a sucking sounds. Cip cip cip cip is what one heard. It may have been better ,no bladder to replace.
@topbuilder3790
@topbuilder3790 7 месяцев назад
We still do it that way in the south. Then you have a couple of Schrader valves to replace every now and then as well as a float valve to regulate the amount of air in the tank. Too much/too little air both = short cycle. Bad for pumps. @@martyscharff763

Loved the pizza oven video. Next on my spare time list. Your shut valve should be between the pressure tank and house. Not between well pump and tank. Currently if you shut that valve, the pump will not stop running because water pressure is not reaching the pressure switch. Also, if you get a leak in your house, you will have to bleed all the pressure from the tank before the leak stops. Takes a while to bleed down an 80 gallon tank. May GOD continue to bless you and your family. Thank you for the content.

For that pressure switch, you could turn the tee counterclockwise, screw on the pressure switch so the small side is against the tank and then re-tighten the tee. I hate those tees for that very reason. I put a screw in shark bite fitting and pushed my pex into it and then made my own fittings for the relief valve, shut off valve (which I connect a pressure gage with a garden hose connector only when I need to check the pressure). Those tees are way overpriced. And I used the same pressure tank from Home Depot. Good job. Now I got to winterize mine.

Good job up until you gotta the electrical portion of the program. No locking ring on the inlet side and the wire coming in a either UF or NM which technically is not supposed to be run in conduit. The other end the liquid taught going into the well is open to the rain fall and will duct the water into the pressur switch. Also. You had a locking ring on that end but installed it backwards. At least stick some ductseal over the end sticking up or better yet install an FS box on the well head and bring out the liquid tight with the proper fittings per NFPA70.

Depending on how long your pump takes to build pressure with the big tank you may have to adjust the kick on pressure so you don't run your well pump so long and overwork it. Last one i did i changed it to start at 70 and end at 80. The reason for the higher pressure is 1: because I like it and 2: because the house is agonist 4 stories tall with a bathroom up top.
@D2O2
@D2O2 11 месяцев назад
You are worried about over working the pump, yet you have a cut-in pressure 10 psi above standard cut off pressure and a cut-off pressure 20 psi above standard cut-off? Longer run time is no issue, short cycling and over pressure are much bigger problems.

Hey Hax, you said your new filtration system removes manganese. There are two forms of manganese found in drinking water. There is the manganic form and the manganous form. Does it remove both?

I'm not really sure. I don't see specifically. They're really helpful though if you call them.

I have an OLD cabin in the Ozarks (1860's) that has the jankiest plumbing set up you would likely ever see. Professionals have looked at it and just left shaking their heads. Because it is such a convoluted mess it was left up to me (when I lived there) to keep things working. One of those things was the pressure switch. I was always So sure I was gonna fry myself.

Yeah. The contacts get get dirty when they’re outside like this. I just replaced this one about six months ago. Always gotta make sure that breaker is off. 😄

Nice video. Question, what system do you have in place to get water in the event you have no power? I saw a lockout on your breaker box, so other than the generator, do you have anything as a backup system? Thanks.

Pretty sure the base of the pressure switch comes off. A little ratchet handle nut driver comes in real handy for close quarters tasks. I would have still needed extra trips to the hardware store anyway, but not because of the pressure switch.

Hellgirl? Was the music during the text portion actually from the Hellgirl anime soundtrack? That's awesome if it was! "O' pitiful shadow, lost I the darkness; bringing torment and pain to others. O' damned soul, wallowing in your sin. Perhaps, it is time to die".

Common sense says the pump is going to run longer to fill bigger tank which in turn will cause pump to run hotter. Although pump will cycle less it is more important that the pump runs cooler. Remember pump, tank and GPM of well are calculated for performance. Increasing the size of the tank throws the performance off. One exception would be if you have heavy irrigation use from your well the larger tank will perform better. A HD pressure switch would be beneficial for constant cycling of pump due to irrigation use. Don't understand the use of the pipe dope and teflon tape....

As a plumbing and heating engineer I am most keen for people to work on as much of our systems as the can do. It both keeps demand optimal when they do good and don't need us and do had and do need us. But plumbing has it own percentage of greedy and dodgy people within. Life they say.
