Nice explanation! Eight months into this new journey ply socks are my new best friend for sure. I'm finding out that there is a lot of "stuff" like ply socks that we need to carry around with us if we're out and about and active. In the Florida heat I've always been a gym/workout shorts person... but they don't have pockets. So now cargo shorts are the standard because we do have to carry "cargo"!! Good video... keep cruisin!! 💪👍
I commend you for living in Florida as an amputee. I have visited hot states a couple times and I STRUGGLE. But yes, ply socks are your best friends for the first couple years. But I promise it gets less and less the more you are an amputee! Keep on keeping on!
Definitely learned something. I mean I knew about "water retention" and such changing the weight/shape of a body... but never really thought what that would mean for an amputee. It is "cool" but also necessary that someone came up with a... workaround(?) to help amputees out. But this is the kind of thing you'd never think of until someone explains it to you.
Right? Like I think we all know that our body swells, but you aren't grateful for how amazing your body can adapt until it no longer can adapt. It's such an easy solution and I'm so grateful that someone figured it out.
I am trying to prepare myself for a possible bka, and it has been so lovely and comforting to find your videos! Weirdly I thought that only the residual limb swelled. I have been afraid of having a limb that constantly changes size, but I guess my whole body is constantly changing and it is an illusion that it is static. I guess I just worry-- why would I cut off my foot that is constantly swelling if I'm just going to replace it with a stump that swells and gets hot? Or maybe it doesn't feel like a swollen hurt limb?
Back in the 80's I had a lot of issues with blisters and skin breaking down. The knee strap or waist strap was a nightmare. No way to make it tight so the limb was constantly moving around.
hopefully there are better options for you now! I'm glad technology is improving over time with prosthetics because it can be really frustrating when your leg doesn't fit well!
It was smooshed because at that depth, the carbon fibre tube would have shrunk by about 1cm in diameter whereas the titanium that it was glued to would have remained almost the same size it was at the surface. This would have placed immense forces on the glue joint leading to a point of failure and once even a tiny almost microscopic area failed the rest would have failed very quickly as water at that depth would have literally cut its way through the point of failure taking more glue and carbon fibre with it. So it is technically accurate to say that it failed because the carbon fiber changed size as Annika put it as strange at that sounds.
@@hot_wheelz This is super informative and I didn't understand much about the incident. All I know is that there was carbon fiber involved. Thanks for the explanation!
