Plying from a centre-pull ball (why you may want to think twice)

Some quick experiments with twist when plying from both ends of centre-pull balls and Andean plying bracelets. I’m not here to tell anyone what to do, but I do want to help people make informed choices. If plying from a centre pull ball works well for you then do it! There will be a longer video in due course, exploring all the questions I have about twist and consistency when using these methods. Is there anything you'd particularly like me to try?

This is really interesting and important information! If I'm at the end of a large project, I might ply from a center pull ball to finish off the last bobbin and avoid leftover singles. It's essential to know that I won't have the same yarn structurally as the rest of the project that was plied together from two bobbins. I also use the center pull ball method to sample a small amount of yarn. In the future if I'm sampling I think I will use the plying bracelet instead of the ball winder. Thank you so much for this experiment and demonstration!

Thank you for this. I’m involved in a tour de fleece and one of our assignments is to make the finest yarn we can and then Andean ply it. I tried Andean plying watching people do it on their hands and couldn’t get the hang of it so now I’m wrapping it around a Turkish spindle. I’m hoping since it’s very thin yarn and there’s not very much I will come out with your second way of plying as if I were pulling from a ball of yarn made on your hands versus a Center pull ball but you’re the first one to help me understand that there may be a difference. Thank you so much for your videos❤

I’ve never been happy with the yarn plied from a center pull ball. Now I know why! Thank you, very good demo.

This video made me rethink an Andean plying bracelet, which I previously thought rather intimidating, and has thusly changes my whole plying game. Thank you for posting it.

You’re very welcome. Honestly, once you’ve done a plying bracelet a few times it gets into your muscle memory and you do it without having to really think about it. Happy plying!

You’re very welcome. I have lots of other experiments in mind but sometimes people need the short and sweet version!

Oh wow! That's a super interesting and helpful demonstration! I knew that the centre-pull added extra twist to the centre strand but didn't think about what happended to the outside strand! That makes sense to why some of my yarns plied this way end up very bumpy. Thank you!!!

Very helpful. Ive recently started spinning on a turkish spindle and playing from the center and the outside is often suggested on other online videos. I have never found it particularly successful doing it this way, but now I see why! Thank you.

This explanation is exactly why some people don't have great success with center pull plying. They aren't aware of what's happening, and that extra twist in the center can make for a difficult session, with not so great results. :)

Thank you! This was helpful!! Makes one wonder how plying from the center of a ball of yarn got so much traction? You would think that people may have had problems with this style of plying for a long long time. You are much appreciated.

I know right! This video was inspired by a Facebook post where someone showed plying from a centre-pull. All the comments were saying “OMG that’s so easy! Why don’t we all do this?” People just follow others without questioning the logic. It’s like those viral ‘craft/kitchen/life hack’ videos which don’t actually work but have millions of views.

I love science!!! I’m curious if a center pull ball from a Turkish spindle would have the same issues?

Well yes. Why would it not? It's still plying from a centre pull or not doing so. Tbh tho, plying from a centre pull works, particularly with spindle spun fibre because it's usually a little over spun. Yes it's "different". That isn't necessarily bad or wrong. If I'm plying to knit, I usually ply from two turtles or kops, but for crochet centre pull plyed works OK... at least it does for me. It really is a matter of personal preference.

So cool! I tried this with the “Miss America” method of plying for sampling, and my piece of ribbon was super twisted at the end. I can’t be sure I added counter-clockwise twist (I’m SO directionally challenged), but still. I found this method in Ply Magazine, and I’ve definitely used it for sampling. Huh.

I have never heard of the Miss America method of plying? I'm not subscribed to that magazine, can you juts give me a quick explanation?
@elysianfibres1642

That explains why one strand has lost all of its twist while the other looks way over-twisted. Won't be doing that again! 😅

Oh and yikes I guess I need to learn the arm band plying instead of the double pull ball
