PM Modi and BJP have no cohesive economic strategy for India: Dr Parakala Prabhakar to TNM

Economist and author Dr Parakala Prabhakar believes that the troubles that the Indian economy currently faces is due to lack of a cohesive economic strategy and this he says is evident from the Prime Minister’s utterances to the policies that the government announces. In this conversation with The News Minute Editor-in-Chief, Dr Prabhakar questions why the government’s stimulus policy during the pandemic was not intended to help the demand side. He discusses his book ‘The crooked timber of New India’ and looks at how the BJP and Sangh have spread Hindutva, something that could not be achieved even during the partition, when communal sentiments had peaked.

😂He used to say the exact same things in 2014. How did he know about "new India" before the new India even began? Why is an "economist" making comments on hindu-muslim and secular? What are his credentials besides economics? Is he speaking as an economist or as a politician? He is a disgruntled leftist. The only thing he has is conjecture and his own personal opinions. No facts to back those claims up. No facts since 2014. He is not an economist - he is a politician, and not a very good one at that.

65% of our GDP comes from consumption and 35% from investment. We have no worthy manufacturing nor agricultural output. How long can we sustain consumption? Also we are the world's biggest arms importer.

@@rameshmedep7385 Agreed but the issue is our GDP run rate in the last 9 years is only 5.1%. This is almost HALF of the run rate we need to win. IOW we are not growing fast enough to win. Our GDP per person is behind Bangladesh and Rwanda. Oor rank is 120th. There are many other numbers that show serious problems in the economy like worst unemployment in 40 years, and 15-30% of even the IIT class did not get placed (eco Times) this does not normally happen. Inflation - just buy food and see.

Chandrababu Naidu's vision created Cyberabad and converted a relaxed old city to the buzzing IT hub giving lakhs of jobs to all Indians. I have been lucky to enjoy the benefits of the IT revolution in Hyderabad. Politics can be murky but the person has worked to uplift India.

Quality of life in India is utterly crap. People can’t wait to get out as fast as they can. What living standards.? Walking out of the door is hazardous to health. So much pollution, trash, noise, unsafe streets. No pavements. The list goes on…..

Disappointing. Countries which followed "demand side stimulus" policy during CoVid are the ones suffering run away inflation today .. 2. public sector being offloaded is consistent policy.. And thirdly G20 lead doesn't have to be handled in the same way other countries did.. India did a brilliant job. Expected deeper insight ..

Sorry I entirely disagree with the Prabhakar point of view, secularism and economy are two different things, to be dealt differently, History tells us that, socialist policies have always been against growth, what present govt. is doing is trying to balance both, It has its own political reasons. BJP is doing far better than congress, there is no doubt about it. but is it enough to catapult 1.4 billion to standards of developing countries?? I don't think so. there need to be more aggressive approach. one or the other election at the corner, it is impossible to start that kind of reforms in a any democratic setup.
