Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot. Here's another full flight in the PMDG 737-700 for MSFS. This time we're flying from KBOS to KJFK as DAL1682. The software you see is still work in progress and in a pre-release beta state, for example the trim sound is still to be added.
I'm acting as PF and PM here, trying to mimic as much of the conversations we'd have in the real cockpit as possible.
If you like my videos please consider a small donation as it's taking a lot of time and effort to create these.

I record straight from the sim without any fancy stuff going on in the background.

Who would have thought that the sound of switches 'flicking' could be so addictive? The sounds are so real. These videos will help so many people to get more realism out of this amazing add-on. I can only imagine the man hours that have gone into making this as good as it is. It must be very rewarding to be part of a company like PMDG.
@Gamerguy-501
@Gamerguy-501 2 года назад
Oh believe me! I thought it was one of those sound add one but no! Those are real actual plane sounds from PMDG that recorded the actual sound sound of this thing! Which is part of the reason why this is gonna be the top airliner beating the Concorde although that one is amazing too with sound wise! But the hours of work and the long waits with this tells us that PMDG took this add on very SERIOUS! They knew exactly what people would expect a highly detailed aircraft to be and ofc they’re strongly known for their products for P3D! They put every little detail from the winds hitting the wing tips to giving you the realistic movements of the aircraft itself! PMDG is the No.1 go to when it comes to wanting a highly realistic aircraft to fly! Not just some random new plane with a lack of details and missing things. PMDG put every bit of detail in this plane! That’s why this plane is going to be highly expensive in the marketplace which that I’m strongly looking forward to on my Xbox Series X which that’s gonna be a big deal for us when we dont get the other planes like the CRJ, BA146, DC-6 which that one they said will come to the consoles soon as well as the 747, 777, from PMDG that will all come to PC and Xbox! So this is just the start of the next level of simulation with this simulator!
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
Of course this will beat the Concorde. Easily. It's lightyears ahead of it. However you do have to recognize that the Concorde is build for a very different audience. It's a simplified addon build for mainstream usage where most users should be able to hop in, read 10 pages of a tutorial and fly it. That's not the case with the PMDG 737, that's build to the highest accuracy possible and it *will* require some studying or at least some extensive watching of tutorials. They're both very different addons build for different markets. But I feel the PMDG is superior in every way.

This is exactly what the flightsim community needs more of. I havd one question if I may. On descend why did you changed to airport altimeter above transition altitude. I usually change for local altimeter crossings FL180. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
In my airline it is SOP to reset the altimeter from local to STD in climb when higher than 3000ft above airport elevation and cleared to a flight level and vice versa when you're descending and cleared to an altitude you'll set the local setting right away. The reason for this is that in Europe every country (and sometimes even different airports within the same country) is using different transition altitudes and our transition levels are varying depending on local altimeter setting. In order to standardize things we have therefore developed this SOP. The good thing is, if you happen to get a "stop climb/stop descend" instruction by ATC that requires to reset the altimeter, the 737 will give you a warning that you're on the wrong setting now once the MCP altitude is reset.

US-based VATSIM controller here. The requirement to request pushback clearance is (generally, though not always) dependent on whether the aircraft is pushing into a movement area (e.g. an active taxiway) or not (e.g. staying on the ramp or "in an alley"). During events or times when staffing permits, some airports may staff a ramp control or have implemented a traffic management program, which may require clearance to push regardless. Hope this helps some, love the videos!

@@A330Driver As I keep watching another note: in the U.S., ATC isn't responsible for gate assignments. The airlines control the ramps, so that's why you'll often get "taxi to the terminal via" or "taxi to terminal 2 via" if a terminal is known to service a specific airline. Otherwise, if it matters, you'll generally get queried as to where you'd like to park.
@wurzzzz
@wurzzzz 2 года назад
@@A330Driver another note, the controller asked you to advise "Spot 7" ready to taxi. You'll notice the numbers are painted on the ground and on the Jepp charts. IRL, the ramp controller would taxi you there and then you would contact ground. Ramp controllers are not FAA employees and FAA controllers (which VATUSA simulates) do not control the ramp, so it's expected that you simulate the ramp movements and call ground at the right time.

One of my favorite things about flying IFR are the fun little local references in SIDs and STARs. One of the approaches from the west into ORD celebrates the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup a few years ago. I chuckled at this poor German man saying "Fenwee" and not knowing who Johnny Bucyk is; I hope in Europe they also have whimsical fixes like this that also go over our heads. :D

At the start you stressed that you're a European pilot, and not familiar with American phraseology/procedures. This became very apparent to me at the moment you said "Release the passengers." and turned the seat belt sign off. In my experience with over 100 flights as a passenger here in the US, that seat belt sign almost never gets turned off, especially on a short flight like Boston to NY. I suspect they do it at the request of the flight attendants to keep people in their seats until they finish their drink service, then possibly they just completely forget about turning it off (I've even seen after a slight bump of turbulence, the sign quickly gets turned off and an announcement to please stay in your seats, haha). What it has resulted in is passengers completely ignore the seat belt sign and get up to grab stuff in the overhead bins, or use the lavatory at will. It's always a relief when I fly international and that sign gets turned off early, and stays off for the vast majority of the flight. I do keep it fastened when in my seat, but it's nice to be able to use the lavatory, grab my headphones, or just stretch my legs and not feel guilty about it. So TLDR, all I'm saying, to role play as an American pilot, you need to just leave that seat belt sign on for at least an hour before you consider turning it off, and if the plane experiences even the tiniest little bump flick that baby back on without delay!

Thank you for the nice video. This is really more advanced then what i have flown in MFS so far. Definetely going to take time to learn. I always find camera shaking a bit of an issue in the sim. In real life the human eye and brain are very good at ignoring any shaking. Indeed when this topic came up during development of the 737 I tried to explicitly watch for any such effects on real landings and the result was that there simply is hardly any shaking visible. Danke Dominik!

Actually the fixed transition level is something interseting. My airline always resets to STD when above 3000AAL and cleared to a FL and always resets from STD to local when cleared to an altitude. We fly to Israel as well where the transition altitude and level is equally high as it is in the USA and we still use this SOP. When I recorded the video I was a little unsure whether I should keep using my airlines SOP for this or do it at 18.000ft since I was sure there would be many American viewers who'd find my SOP outright wrong.
2 года назад
I'm aware of the SOP used by your airline and I think it makes sense. What could happen of course and especially when flying in an area such as US with a very high TL is if you set STD during the departure when cleared to a FL and then receive a "Stop climb at..." due traffic for example before reaching the TL
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
@ Indeed, you'll have to reset the altimeter when that happens. However, when recieving a stop climb (or descend) instruction we have the following SOP: Press ALT HOLD. Reset MCP Altitude and confirm with the other pilot. Press LVL CHG. The moment you select the MCP altitude to the new level the airplane will turn your altimeter setting amber to alert you that it's above the specified transition level. That serves as a great reminder in case you forgot to reset the altimeters beforehand.

Frequencies are always a thing on VATSIM, there just aren't that many controllers available and since the network still uses 25kHz spacing instead of 8.33 the total number of freuqencies is a lot less. Now that's probably something that's more of a problem here in Europe than in the States (do you use 8.33 at all?), but it's something that definitely has its influence. And of course, if you want to cover JFK approach with a single controller in real life... probably the best TCAS test there is!

My airline does not takeoff with VNAV either. I find it odd but supposedly has to do with the predictive windshear. Also, shouldn't the FMA read N1....HDG SEL (LNAV)....TO/GA when you press the TOGA for takeoff? Looks like HDG SEL never came up. Great content!

Yes, the FD windshear guidance is one of the points. There's others though. We did do operational trials with VNAV takeoffs, but it was found that they didn't benefit the operation. Way cool. Just noticed this is released. Been flying the older PMDG 737 planes with FSX /P3D for years. Now been on hiatus from flight sims for a few years..I did try the FS 2020 when it came out but sadly my PC was barely running it on med/high (i5, 3.5Gghz, 32ram, gtx1070) with the default more complex planes. My main question is: how good is this PMDG optimized for the FS 2020 platform, how much does this add stress to the baseline sim? Thanks !

I don't see much of a difference in fps to the default aircraft. Try the FlyByWire A320 freeware addon. The PMDG 737 gets better fps than the FBW A320 so if you can run the A320 you can run the 737.

@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
The speed of the trim is alright, it can take ages to trim it up. You're correct, when the flaps are extended it trims at a faster speed. If we want to get even more into detail, there's 4 diffferent trim speeds in the 737. For each condition (flaps UP or NOT UP) there's a fast and a slow mode. I'm not going to go into detail which mode is used under which conditions as that would really be beyond the scope of these videos, but you can be assured that they are correctly implemented in the PMDG 737 for MSFS.

Thank you so much for this awsome video!! So happy to this this bird in the Sky of MFS2020. Just a question about the HUD, is it normal that during the cruise phase the horizon line of the HUD still far above the « real » horizon ? Thanks for your answer 👍
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
Hi, yes it is. Keep in mind you're flying at altitude, thus the real horizon is below you and would show you a negative pitch. However the HUD is showing you the horizon line relative to your aircraft. Think of it like this: The horizon line on the HUD shows you how high above the earth you're actually flying. You can do something similar easily as a passenger: Next time you're flying take a bottle of water and hold it in front of your eyes. Match it up so that the surface of the water is exactly a flat line in front of yours eyes (so that you don't see the top of bottom of the waters surface). This is the horizon line. Now if you look past that into the sky you can see how high above the ground you're actually flying. That serves as a very nice trick to determine if you're getting above a cloud layer for pilots as well if you don't have a HUD.

@A330Driver 2 года назад
You looked at the wrong altimeter here. The Radio Altimeter (the one the voices are based on) is located at the bottom center of the HUD. The Altimeter on the right hand side is the barometric altimeter. Since JFK airport isn't located exactly at sea level, but a bit higher, the barometric altimeter reads a higher altitude than the radio altimeter. If you look at the radio altimeter you'll see that the audio callouts are spot on.

@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 года назад
"Accurate" is something I always struggle a bit with. If I had a 10.000$ Yoke with the correct force feedback, etc. I might actually give an answer here, but seeing that 99,9x% of us (including myself) are using comparably cheap yokes or joysticks (callsing 1000$ cheap here... because compared to anything I've used and feld in a real aircraft that's what it is) I actually find it hard to judge. I'll put it that way: The numbers are pretty close, the handling is close to what I'd expect it to do with some shortcomings every now and then. We've worked a lot with the developers to get it as close as possible and we really pushed the edges of what's possible in the sim. Thus I'd say for MSFS in terms of airliners it's the closest you can get. Can you however learn to fly a real 737 by hand with it? Probably not. But I'd give you that very same last answer for ANY flight sim and flight sim addon.
