"Pneuma" from Tool's "Fear Inoculum" album (2019).
Wow, this was really quite difficult. That rhythm in the intro/verses is so fucked up. Like it does not make any sense at all until you've played it a million times. So.. only one song left which is Invincible. I'm gonna take my sweet time with that one since I'll have to figure out a lot of things for it. The effects during the bass solo, the rhythm, etc.
Anyway, apart from the main riff, Pneuma is actually pretty easy if you don't count memorizing all the variations in the song. I just can't believe that there's only 1 song left now..
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning: D-A-D-G
Artist: Tool
Bassist: Justin Chancellor
Album: Fear Inoculum (2019)
Song: PNEUMA
Bass: Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash

I came to your vid as a drummer, this song has turned our world upside down in terms of counting the odd meters, there's simply so many variations on counting it, but you guys, bass players are truelly our best friends in the world, you have figured it out. thank you. Not that it makes playing it any simpler..we got some insane polyrhythmic stuff to contend with in the 4\4 section..ohh boy...
@LeoBassCovers2
@LeoBassCovers2 4 года назад
I like how drummers and bassists make up the rhythm section while they're typically at polar opposites of each other. Drummers have to be very steady and somewhat skilled to keep it all in motion, but they also have to learn about patterns, time signatures, polyrhythms, etc. Bassist can just mess around, not learn any theory and just play a groove in time and it matches like it was supposed to be basically. Cause I don't believe that Justin knows a lot of music theory. He already confirmed that he's just plays what comes to mind. But yeah, this song is nuts in terms of all of that..

Thanks! I don't actually use a physical pedal. It's all digital so.. I don't really have an answer.

Is it my imagination or are all the baselines on Fear Inoculum fairly simple? At least in comparison to older Tool stuff.

Hmm, I'd say it's fairly similar. People like to say that Justin's older lines are really complex and innovative, but I don't think he's actually changed anything. Same effects, same weird delay riffs, similar clean riffs, etc.

With that many time signature changes I don’t know how anyone can say it’s simple. But to add to that Adam and Justin both are geniuses in the ability to make a “simple” riff sound so good. Just an open cord at the right place a time and people get goose bumps. They amaze me honesty.

I tried learning this blind - i.e. purely by ear, without tab or RU-vid assistance. How I laughed when I found out that Justin used a delay 🤣🤣🤣
