Brian, I think we must be sharing some type of cosmic energy with each other. Before you even finished with your video I knew this was a book that I would buy. Then to hear you say it was your favorite book of 2016 at the end was totally cool. We shared another favorite with The Tools book. There's so many aha's that I took away so here are just a few of them. First, I love the word itself - Grit. Grit seems to have a certain cachet to it. It oozes with oomph. Don't you just love it when life gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you are learning? Love the micro grit ....no sound...no problem...keep moving... Love it that I get a double whammy for my effort. Remove luck and good teachers (external to self, unpredictable)....let's talk about the psychology that's going on in your mind (internal, things that I can control...what and how I think) Talent (your ability to create deeper skills) x Effort = Skills It's only when you have talent that is coupled with effort that you create skills. Invest your talent with effort and you end up with a marketable skillset. How many people do with know that has a lot of talent but puts in no effort? A ton But it doesn't stop there. Once you have skills, develop the skills set you then put in more effort then you have achievement. What's the common denominator in both equations? -EFFORT! We have control over the amount of effort that we put in. Gritty people put in a ton of effort over an extended period of time. Gritty Passion - You won't find any gritty people who hate what they do. It's simply not sustainable over long periods of time. A Passion that endures. A Passion that guides our lives. You need to have an ultimate concern. What are you willing to give your life to and stop chasing the buck? What are you willing to structure your entire life around? Black Hole Focus - Every step you take is leading you to California if you say that Cali is where you want to go. All your minor trips are in the direction of Cali. Two ways to Grow Grit Inside Out - (Passionate Interest + Deliberate Practice (step outside your comfort zone) + Purpose (what you love to do and what you are committed to giving to the world -SERVICE ...SERVICE...SERVICE TO THE WORLD ) + Hope (resolve to make your life better and you believe you have the wherewithal to make it happen) Outside In -Wise Parenting, Culture, Sports Teams Combine High standards + High Warmth = Wise Parenting Combine High standards + Low Warmth = Authoritative Parenting Low standards + High Warmth = Permissive Parenting Low standards + Low Warmth = Neglectful Parenting Latin root of the word parenting means to Bring Forth the potential within their child....you can parent anyone by holding high standards with high warmth.

Favorite big idea(s): Wise Leadership = High Expectations + High Warmth; Wise Leadership is to bring forth the genius/potential; redefining genius to include effort. If leaders would give feedback in the way that you described for encouraging a student to redo their assignment, giving feedback would never be difficult. It would always be an inspiring experience. My epiphany for this one: If you are your own "parent" (bringing forth your own optimal life) then you can be warmer to yourself. I'm a perfectionist - quite hard on myself. Not allowing myself to appreciate achievements. Always thinking I can do better, or am not good enough. A habit I will now try to cultivate is, while holding these high standards, being warmer about how I think of them and push myself. Especially useful if you use any meditative tools to externalise parts of your own super-ego etc (eg imagining a guide). I could feel a shift in my being when I thought of this. This is worth some deep thinking.

Effort counts twice!! And there's a mathematical formula for it!! I don't percieve myself as exceptionally smart but at this point I have out(deep)worked everyone else and it's pretty rewarding. It's comforting to hear such ideas by people that know more than me. Great vid Brian - keep on rocking \m/

Brian, there is a meta-analysis of the grit literature that has just been published that shows that Duckworth has completely overstated the predictive power of grit in her work due to statistical errors, that grit does not predict success very well, and that grit is simply a reinvention of conscientiousness.

Thanks much, Brian! I truly appreciate the key big ideas you've shared. It's great to know that someone also thought of everyone being a parent in essence..single..married, a biological parent or not. Each one is a parent..a privilege to bring forth the best potential in any one.. we just need to be aware & be intentional to be a wise parent where we are planted. Passion deeply rooted within for service and higher purpose plus perseverance ( dedicate effort and time) even in the absence of external affirmation or compliments results grit. Hi Brian, do you think that there might be a connection between "grit" and "moral licensing". If it takes us a lot of self-discipline and effort to be gritty, do we allow ourselves to slip (in a different area) afterwards? I actually asked Angela about this, unfortunately she has no data on this particular phenomenon.

Sounds like she, and you, are saying that if you got it, you got it. Grit can’t be taught, it isn’t inherited.

"High expectations”? But what if you can see the student hasn’t developed any skills to show potential?

Some people would compare your describing hope to faith. One Bible translation says faith “is the assured expectation of things hoped for”. Then take that definition of faith and go with another scripture that says “faith without works is dead” and there you have grit.

So with zero skill, I cant have any achievement. Thats math
