@MageBurger The contemporary colloquialism is referring to android and IOS, occasionally counting the likes of PlayStation or Nintendo handhelds but people will usually specify handheld consoles.
I've had my Win 2 for almost a month now, and I don't think you really understood the point or fully utilized the abilities of this device. It's actually terrific
John Doe Not really but i haven't actively sold mine. But once you have the win 2 the win 1 becomes obsolete. Except for maybbbeee weight and size (bc it is a tad bigger) and joystick placement it is significantly better than the Win 1 in every way
Roy Cuevas lol next Monday lolol. But seriously, this thing is just stupendous. Even for just the emulation quaility alone it's worth its proce. Linus doesn't know what he's talkkng about.
How is that better then 4x USB-Type C gen 2 (and audio jack)?? A single USB-Type C (No mention of full gen 1 or 2 support), USB 3.0 type A and micro HDMI for this guy. I mean, you still need dongles/adapters/hubs for anything else then one USB-Type A connection.
Seriously? Macbook Pro's ports are all extremely fast, and this thing costs almost a thousand dollars, which is really expensive for so little on board performace.
True. I have one now and I couldn't be happier. For me personaly it's the best Handheld Gaming device in the world, you can just do EVERYTHING with it because it's basically a normal pc in a very small form factor.
I have one, its sooo worth the money, nah it doesn't replace a fully fledged gaming desktop or laptop but its good for road trips or if you need to do a tad more than what your smartphone cant, such as long emails or PDF files
Austin played on it gtva5 with 20 FPS, overwatch with 30+, rocket league as well... From your review it seemed like it cant handle games which are not 4+ years old...
This was a confusing and terrible review. He gave wrong info about CPU and price, and also now some people think this can't even run GTA3 and that it is only a streaming device... He didn't show any PC game that it can play well of all the tens of thousands of games released from 1980s to present day. He could at least show Skyrim, Doom, Cuphead...
+YesIWill... Why are you falsely trying to guess framerate based on specs when there are already two Overwatch GPD Win 2 videos on RU-vid. It's around 30 FPS at 720p, but if you lower it a bit more you can get 40-60 FPS. People are perfectly fine playing new games at 600p or even below 500p on handhelds like the Switch.
AntonioR Software If a $650+ performance device such as GPD Win 2 can't run games at atleast 900P without serious visual downgrade or low fps, I would personally say its a piece of shit.
Yes I will I am can’t wait You've got to be kidding me. GPD Win2 has better specs than the Switch, how is it not even capable of what the Switch can do?
+White Knight 5 "$650+ performance device such as GPD Win 2"... performance device ? I can't believe what I'm reading, LOL. It's a small POCKET computer. You can't directly compare performance with Switch, because developers make special optimized games for the Switch which then they sell for a higher price, it is not running the same game. Also people completely ignore all the things you can do with this since it is a full PC. You can go so far and program your own Switch game on it if you wish, while Switch is limited to play a small number of games and that is it. You can't even browse the Internet and reply to this comment on the Switch.
600 for a device like this isn't even that bad, judging by it's specs. EDIT: Just seen videos of people playing GTA 5, Witcher 3 (albeit at windowed mode) and Skyrim on this thing. 30FPS at low quality, but still. This thing is pretty damn impressive for it's size / price.
Quality/price I guess it's not bad at all but i'd rather pay three times as much and have a sweet PC that can play all that and more, at a much, much better quality. I'm probably just not into handheld devices. I've seen people comparing it to macbooks and that's just not fair, Apple products are infamous for their high prices.
You can tell at the end Linus wanted to say "Speaking of things that aren't cheap, TUNNELBEAR!" but then realized that he was supposed to say good about them, not bad. xD
I come back to this video once in awhile to see if it really is as terrible of a review as I thought. And it really is. No optomization and no gameplay of amazing games that actually run well. This is the equivalent of someone reviewing a frozen personal pizza; critisizing its inability to feed an entire family and then saying it tastes terrible and is hard to eat even though he never cooked it..
It's one of the more demanding PS2 games, it was used to show the extent of PS2 emulation on the thing, not to showcase GTA 3 which I could play on my phone 6 years ago.
They should at least run other games natively that likely will run decently on this device. Heck even Doom runs surprisingly well with this and yet they didn't show that. This needs a proper review, though I think it's because this is not yet a final production model.
PureRushPwneD Nah, actually I wish I had a PC powerful enough to play it back in 2007. Instead, I would read and watch videos about people benchmarking their PC's by stacking barrels in Crysis.
this is an INSTANT buy for me when it enters production. I was so close to getting the GPD win, but it was just a little too weak for my liking. JUST. This thing though, is fucking PERFECT. Can't wait for it to start shipping already.
How is it did it use the fan speed switch from the first gpd win or does it control itself like the pocket I really wish someone told me years ago you could get a windows laptop the size of a 3ds
IMHO it’s a very cool idea. I was dreaming about full fledged pocket PC when I was a kid, it can be very convenient as a school/traveling device etc. My perfect communicator would be something similar with windows 10 onboard and a phone function. May be we will see very powerful pocket size PCs what can run AAA games in next several years. Thanks for video, Linus! And hello from Russia, we all appreciate your work!
Silviu Vulcan Absolutely agree. But everything gets smaller and smaller, you now can play on a laptop for instance instead of huge pc. But that you said is true though :(
ilovefunnyamv2nd That Pocket PC you mean the one runs Windows Mobile OS that is used on early smartphones and PDA's? Or you mean the UMPC that used to run Vista with specialized GUI for UMPC? Also Windows 10 Mobile doesn't run any desktop apps on emulation at all even on Continuum (docked), it just run same UWP apps from Microsoft Store. W10M though just recently got discontinued and left under maintenance state. They are focusing on making full Windows 10 to be modular and that will be eventually used on smartphone-like device instead. When this happens, then there will be a converge of this GPD Win device and a smartphone in the future, which is exciting if that happens.
@14 in a little phone sized thing it's pretty damn impressive especially when compared to the gpu in the Win 2 being less than 1/10 as powerful and the cpu having 2 cores
@@oo--7714 nah having a possibility to complete cyberpunk from the start and to the end on a handheld steam deck is unbelieveable, can't say anything bad about it
To get a full picture of what this machine is capable of check out The Phawx's channel. He demos games from multiple generations on the machine (including current gen games) although this is clearly meant for retro gaming and smaller indie titles on the go. ru-vid.complaylists
Sergeant Avakkado dudes this shit it's a mini laptop that can run many games. For ex gta 5:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JMNWzd4mTcI.html
Nidus: if u r that desperate to play gta 5 on low 15 fps looking like GTA SA with stuttering then go aheah... its not worth it dude. 500 dollars for a useless mini laptop. U can upgrade a pretty expensive component in ur pc for that price. This is NOT a "gaming pc"
In my case an Ssd did increase my gaming experience. I haven't recorded myself back then to show you proof but believe me,an ssd does make your gaming exp better well better. The most comon and biggest improvement it's on the loading time of a game and textures loading.
I really love watching GPD Win videos even if I probably couldn't have one. It just makes me amazed that someone can actually have a PC game from their pockets.
@@dastimRETRO LMAO no it's not. You probably should check Digital Foundry analysis for that. On paper it might be equal to a GTX 1080 but only for few minutes before THERMAL THROTTLING. Once it reach Thermal limit, it's barely equal to GTX 970. So that's like 5 minutes of gameplay in terms of Rasterization performance, and RTX 2050 equivalent Ray Tracing before it thermal throttle to GTX 970 level. Genshin Impact is still the go-to benchmark for iPhone and Android. The only phone that can match iPhone in Price-to-performance is ASUS ROG Phone series. Genshin Impact can run max settings & 120 FPS on iPhone before it thermal throttle and down to 60 FPS. ASUS ROG can do it all day without even throttling. Yes I know about Metal API which means the Phone itself can run Shadow of Tomb Raider with atrocious performance. I know some PC games that already ported to Metal API, and there are very very few of it.
I think you did a better job on this review than on the XD+ one but if you check out the other people who've tested native gaming on the Win 2 prototype I think some would be surprised at what it is capable of. Doom for example performs really well using the Vulkan API. Would love to see you do a deeper dive on these types of devices.
DONT GET A CHUWI. i have had 3 fail. i bought one for myself and loved it, so i bought my brother one. Then i bought the hibook. within MONTHS they all failed in the same way. they stopped charging. DO NOT GET A CHUWI.
potato potato potato potato potato potato potato ironically it can run essentially every single Game of GamCube and Wii because Dolphin is better optimized even been the Wii more powerful than PS2
because this device is geared towards people who want to game on their workbreaks or on the bus, or something like that, wherever a Wifi connection exists, and yes City busses have wifi now, atleast in Dallas/Fort Worth they do
he didnt use config tweeks. and listen idiot have you every owned a gpd product before? due to the screen size running a game at even 360p looks like 720p. litterally everyone at my work thinks my gpd win 1 is running borderlands the presequal at 1080p
Just got the win 1 for Christmas and I love it I can play all my favourite titles on the go without having to wait for them to be ported such as you would on the switch 3ds or vita awesome!!
So glad the GPD is back for round 2, I bought the first one and it's a great little device for older games and emulators, just like this one. I don't think this is huge enough of an upgrade for me to get this one but maybe the win 3 if it is another noticeable step up. I think if you are satisfied with running last gen games on low settings, this new model should be able to handle it without too much issue.
Kenward Evan Fuck your Tegra lol. Do you have any idea how many great PC titles you have access to with this? Like, I can finally play StarFleet Command on the move. Fuck Android POS.
Surface Pro also doesn't fit in your pocket and is stuck with passive cooling. With a proper cooling system, you'd be surprised how much you can do with hardware that's supposed to be low-end. The integrated GPU in the Win 2 easily beats a handheld Switch and almost beats a docked Switch at max performance, which is impressive for a handheld PC made by a small Chinese company.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P2pUSKYBQk4.html Several facts about this: - The Win 2 in this video is being limited to 7 watts. If it were using higher wattage, it would perform a lot better. - According to Digital Foundry, the Switch version uses adaptive resolution scaling, which is active in both handheld mode and docked mode. Handheld mode can dip down to 768 x 432 resolution at times according to their video. In this video, as far as I'm aware, it's locked at 720p with no drops from that resolution. I own both an original Win and a Switch, and I think they're both great machines for what they are. Comparing them is a bit difficult, though, outside of performance, since they're both made for completely different markets.
lol, if u think that will happen then u also believe in the toothfairy. First: it will get way to hot, second: it does not got enough PSU power, third: Its not big enough.
ehmc130 I have it. But not all mobos support it. Had the good motherboard that supported the Q6700 but it died. Have to live on with dat cursed core 2 duo E4400 but at least I could OC it to 3GHz.
They took constfuctive feedback to heart. Way nicer and a lot closer to being a full fledged gaming machine. I had a dell inspiron 3000 with a previous gen core m3 with 900mhz baseclock and that turbo boost makes it pretty snappy. Played games like skyrim and beamn drive at lowest settings (and resolution and 30fps framelimit in beamng) and thats prolly why it died out on me.
yeah as the other guy said it runs doom 2016 at high 30s-mid 40s sooooooo yeah it will have no problem with most modern games all as shown by the phawx.
We can run the original doom the first one when a looooooong time ago that was considered violent if we could run it on this we would be set for retro gaming
I'm actually pretty tempted by this device....I've got a decent gaming PC for the Witcher 3s and D:OS 2s of the world, but I've also a ton of cool indie titles in my Steam/GOG accounts that I don't get around to and would be perfect for this...Hollow Knight, Hard West, Wasteland 2, UnEpic, La Mulana...now I have really improved my chances of making it through these great titles by having greater access to them. Throw in that it looks to handle almost any PC port from X360 era and back AND emulation up to GC/PS2 pretty well? I'm in.
I have the Win 1. I love it since the games I play are mostly indies and old school JRPGs. PS. The first one was cheap if you deal hunt. I got it for under 300
This changed my life. Dramatic, I know. But it's true. I bought the 256gb version a few months ago, and I have it loaded it up with about 25 Steam games so far, with still plenty of room to spare. Outside of Steam, I also have Dragon Age Inquisition, which runs flawlessly. I don't bother with console type games that require precise controls like first person shooters. But for rpg's, 2D platformers, isometric adventure games, and pretty much any retro game... this thing absolutely rocks. Things like Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland 2, Dragon Age Origins (and Inquisition), Bastion, Transistor, Torchlight 2, Mark of the Ninja, Terraria, Ori and the Blind Forest, Hollow Knight, Rayman Legends, Guacamelee, Escapists 2, all of the Shadowrun's, Steamworld Dig 2, StarDew Valley, HellDivers, Dead Cells, Shadow Tactics... these games run perfectly. And it's freaking awesome to have my retro Steam collection with me everywhere I go. Expensive? Yes. But I still recommend this machine as a must-buy for anyone who enjoys these types of games. It's my favorite thing right now.
Linus should of shown more games on his GPD Win 2 video. If he showed Crysis or Skyrim running at 30+ fps people would have a better impression of this little device instead of criticising it for being "underpowered" when it actually isn't
Luis XX dude what are you talking about I play the latest games quite smoothly with a graphics card I bought for $300 2 years ago. I'm at 1080p mind you. I'm not playing at 4K or anything.
i play fallout 4 nicely 50-60. battlefeild 1 at 60. black ops 3 at 60. witcher 3 actually hits 60 most of the time. all on high or ultra. what more could you want?
Luis, that is so ridiculous. I've used a GTX 960 since it came out and I've never had a game struggle to run, at the lowest, 30fps. It's such a silly misconception that you have to have the latest and best possible GPU in order to even run games.
This is one of those things that I might pick up after one more iteration is released. Though I would like to see something like this breed a new standard of mini handheld computers.
Real Funny Bears Honest truth my friend, steam sales etc. And you'll probably make your money back faster than a 3DS. Linus didn't give this device enough credit with its ability to play esports titles etc. On the go CSGO vs Mario which do you choose? As for age I'm however old you'd like to perceive me as. Because this is LinusTechTips that makes my age 12 I guess -(;
Abdul Muhaimin A better screen on this one and you don't have to bend your neck to look at one screen or sacrifice the ergonomics of your controls. Personally like one screen better.
The Phawx is a frequent user on the discord and users like him test out various games to test the capabilities. The Phawx, Deenox Don, and Mobimaniak3000 all got prototypes. It wasn't streamed and you can see all the FPS details in the video itself
I remember in 1985 when i have my Handheld Casio Champion Derby videogame.. or friends has Nintendo handheld games.. was amazing era!!! but... this little console... WOW!!!! what nice looking thing!!
WHAT GAMES WILL IT RUN IT SEEMS ATTRACTIVE FOR ITS SIZE BUT FUCK ITS ALMOST 700$ which im willing to loose IF THE GPD WIN2 IS PLAYABLE FOR GAMES LIKE FALLOUT4 OR WATCH DOGS 2
Didn't look comfortable to me.. was laggy and slow af. That was pretty much unplayable. Emulators have always been bad at playing things, even with a beefy desktop computer, I'm not sure why he keeps testing stuff with emulators. Also the in-home streaming is quite deceiving.. He shouldn't even bring it up other than it is a possibility. Anything with a screen and a wifi connection can run in-home streaming.
don't forget, you could get a gpu dock along with this thing to plug in through the usb c and just get a nice lengthy cable. I imagine you could do some nice gaming with that setup
USB-C is only USB 3.0 on this device and as such can only do 5gbps ... not fast enough for egpu and to be honest absolutely pointless in this form factor
Nice that you made a review, but very bad game examples. This thing is up to 2-3 faster than the GPD Win 1 (which was the fastest micro-size laptop/gaming system with win10 at this time), and can handle all ps3/360 era pc games, some of the newer games (depending on the engine) and even more with modding.
Linus, I think you undersold the capabilities a little bit. It totally can run some current gen games, but at lower than native res. At such a small screen size, its not a deal breaker.
i was hoping you would talk about that fact that the bios has a lot of settings that you can change, including overclocking the CPU and GPU. i don't think you deserve to have the Tech Tips name. here is a more in depth review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VGq9gSymxrE.html by The Phawx the video is 12:17 long
You have to consider the use-case for something like this. No one should look at this tiny device, then bitch and moan about how it can't play Crysis at FullHD 60 fps. Temper your expectations. Problem is, Linus regularly reviews "high-end" computer gear, as in "95% of America and/or Canada will never be able to afford it" high-end. So, when he says it fails as a gaming machine and is only really good for Steam in-home streaming, I have to wonder exactly how he perceives the experience it provides against the performance he's expecting.
Neopolitan I am saying the emulator is not well made, not talking about the hardware. Up until I believe two years ago, they couldn’t get the Ace Combat series running with proper collision detection, and those games still have trouble running in anything but software mode.
Toshiba is about to come out with a 42mm M.2 SSD soon that actually is NVMe, it's called the RC100 and it'll supposedly be capable of 1620/1130 MB/s read/write, not quite as good as the Samsungs but still a hell of a lot better than anything currently offered in the 2242 M.2 form factor. I wonder if this thing will actually be able to switch to NVMe and take advantage of it or if it'll still be hardware limited to AHCI.
Probably not so good. Maybe at medium to low settings. So no. Crysis is an atrocious badly optimized game. You are better off with crysis wars. It might run crysis wars and crysis multiplayer in medium settings though.
i ran crysis in about 30fps on high on my intel atom z3735f 1.33ghz with 2gb rams and 32mb vram integrated graphics, so it could basically run it on ultra
It actually is very well optimized, considering that most of the modern AAA games don't use some graphic tricks it uses. The thing is that it hunger for high ghz on processors, which was the patch that the industry was thinking on taking. Is like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, made to future rigs use its full power.
@@nemesis5289 Bought it used, battery was the first thing I replaced regardless of how old/new the previous one was. Still going good so far. Very fortunate there’s a big community that still sells these batteries on Aliexpress.
Man, I can run Skyrim and Dark Souls at a solid 30 FPS on my original GPD with a bit of tweaking, did you even bother to find a game that runs well on it, or doing more than bumping the settings down? Most AAA games just require ini edits to remove things like shadows, then they run perfect!
I think one more gen and these things are gong really come into their own. From Win 1 to Win 2 it has come a long ways half that much better with the 3 and I could see even dropping 1000 on it
