The fire at the iconic Pocono Manor Resort & Spa was reported at 6:30 A.M. in the kitchen area. All staff and guests were evacuated. 4 firefighters escaped a ceiling collapse. The protected wood frame structure featured hidden voids which helped spread the fire. 11/1/19.

Unfortunately, old wooden structures that have been modified time and time again, just do not survive wind-driven fires. Huge resort hotels in rural and scenic areas usually go this way. That fricken wind definitely did not help their fight. I'm amazed the whole place wasn't a seething mass of flames before anyone even arrived. Lots of voids and open space for fire to spread unknown to the naked eye. That's why tearing it down, while putting it out, is best practice.. If you don't, it will just rekindle and burn down later on.

So should we simply close down every historic place because they are tinderboxes? There goes the Smithsonian - man that place is old, how about the Metropolitan Museum of Art? There are so many wonderful historic places and buildings it is very sad to see this one go.
@zyglo9826
@zyglo9826 4 года назад
Monica Favia...you’re missing the point. I never said every historic combustible building should be closed and torn down. I’m saying that buildings that offer overnight sleeping accommodations need to be held to a high standard of safety in order to prevent a recurrence of the many deadly hotel fires that have occurred in the US and worldwide. You cited the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as examples of non-fire-safe buildings. These buildings don’t offer sleeping accommodations. Historically significant buildings can and should be preserved, and they can be made reasonably fire safe with some modifications. When I go to bed in a hotel room, I want to feel secure that the management has taken all reasonable measures to prevent fire.

@jaysmith1408
@jaysmith1408 4 года назад
The oldest portion of the resort was from 1902. There have been pushes to mandate automatic suppression systems in older buildings, but the sheer cost for such a rarely used system makes many owners opposed to it. Accidental discharges can cause major water damage. As well, this resort is on top of a hill in a very rural township. The water system they have couldn’t possibly support the demands for this fire, both in volume and in pressure. We had a warehouse fire in a fully hydranted area, lots of pressure, but four engines and six quints drained the system. The ENTIRE system. The rep from the water company came to the scene demanding we shut down, he was out of water. The plant can only make 8000 gpm. We were pushing 10,000. Anyways, they do have a pool, but that water would quickly be drained. The nearest lake is 4 km away. Even in cases where there are hydrants, with high fire load and fire spread like this, frequently tankers have to be brought in to supplement what water you are getting from hydrants. The entire township department has two engines, a tanker, a truck, and three brush trucks. That brings 4,850 gallons of water. Five minutes, maybe? And they’re ten, twenty minutes away. Not counting mutual aid, but I don’t know their card off-hand. There are obvious downsides to building giant old wooden buildings on a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

Gregory W You really think trying to install a sprinkler system in a building that has original 1908 construction would be cheaper than this fire??? It was scheduled for a major renovation starting early next year. This fire is literally just cheap demo work. There is a reason investment companies stay away from older structures, it’s rarely a cheap option. These old buildings are literally piles of fuel. If safety is your concern and you want newer and more strict code enforced it’s cheaper to drop these buildings and start over. But when the historical and sentimental value outweigh safety, disasters happen.

Lappi Lappland Not necessarily. Highly likely, but depends on tactics. If you nip in right in the bud when it starts, you can keep it to a room, or at worst, a wing. When it runs the walls and gets out to the wind, you’re screwed. Given the place doesn’t have its own fire brigade, outside of bulldozing it, you’re not stopping it. We had a residential garage structure fire (likely started by a Tesla) where it was wind fueled. The home location is not fond of actually calling for help, so backup was 45 minutes delayed on dispatch, add response time. Anyways, only way to stop the extension to the house, was a public works employee driving a bulldozer straight through it. Apparently they did that here, albeit with an obvious delay of procuring gigantic backhoes in the middle of nowhere.

read that the hotel was supposed to shut down this past weekend for a 2 yr major renovation. Well I guess its going to be more like 3 or more now if they rebuild since the place went down to the ground. if the fire did start in the kitchen as your saying then I'm surprised that the hotels fire suppression system in the kitchen didn't kick in. With so many requirements that they have now in the kitchen surprised how fast the fire spread to the whole building.Yeah the wind didn't help either. on a side note great shot of how when you introduce air into a part of the building that shows only white smoke. Look at what happens at the 8:50 mark going forward when the boom excavator rips into the building and introduces air to the hole that was made. went from the happy white smoke to the darker gray to black in 10 seconds with flames showing.

the description does say "The protected wood frame structure featured hidden voids which helped spread the fire. 11/1/19.", so it sure sounds like it did have a system. Even new sprinkled apartment buildings can burn to the ground, just look at the Elmwood Park, NJ apartment building fire a few years ago.

@ronstrulic4388
@ronstrulic4388 3 года назад
I would imagine they called for the excavator due to the intensity of this fire. The unsafe conditions and imminent collapse would not allow for crews to operate an interior attack. A structure that size the only option at that point is dig and expose the fire. Your fire investigation skills and operations are lacking.

So sad a piece of history is gone, its kind of odd this build stood since 1902 I think it said and it burns down just as they were going close it for 2 years to do renovations, some of the renovations has to do with complying to ADA regs, I am just saying its easier to do so with a new building then it is to retro fit an old structure, odd

The place was certainly losing money so time to get rid of it. How many remember High Point Inn in Mt.Pocono where Burger King now sits? Onawa Lodge in Mountainhome? The list goes on. As long as that Inn stood, all of a sudden it's totally destroyed in the early hours of the morning while everyone is at work making it hard to get the volunteer fire departments on the scene? How convenient. Even the stone and concrete portions of the structure certainly suffered considerable smoke and water damage or were gutted out completely. You might as well tear it all down and plant trees and grass. It's become another Buck Hill Inn along with many other old hotels and inns that once dotted the Poconos, most of which succumbed to mysterious fires. Kalahari wins!
