Around 3:30pm, multiple calls and heavy smoke from a distance were indicators that a lot of help would be needed at this fire. A 3rd alarm was struck on arrival bringing in 14 departments to the scene. Tankers were needed to bring water to the scene because there are no hydrants in this part of town. The occupant and dog in the house when the fire started were able to safely get out while 1 firefighter sustained a minor injury.

Holly crap look at that LP tank venting! which is better than exploding (BLEVE) but what a sight! Charlie side just completely consumed. Sorry for the homeowners loss. glad no serious injuries to responders.
@Jimmythefish577
@Jimmythefish577 4 года назад
Venting precedes a BLEVE, the more it vents, the greater the risk of a BLEVE. That’s why they were cooling it from a safe distance, to stop the contents reaching the point of BLEVE.
@danielbierwirth2190
@danielbierwirth2190 4 года назад
OK so the Propane tank was not anywhere near where it was venting. Watch closely and you'll see the propane tank on the left side, as you look at the venting, 6:44. I suspect that gas flame was the gas line to the kitchen or dryer etc.... I was shocked that they didn't just go over and turn the gas tank to the "OFF" position. Just a thought, only 40 years of firefighting experience, but I could be wrong.
@johnhyman3549

Sir, my comment was about the tank venting around the 1 min mark of the video. It clearly is the tank venting. Thank you for 40 years of service.
@danielbierwirth2190
@danielbierwirth2190 4 года назад
@@johnhyman3549 John, I didn't even see that tank, It looked like the "venting gas" as coming from inside the residence. After your comment, I went back and WHALLA, there is another tank which is burned black. You are absolutely right. That thing would have put hair on your chest, (or taken it off), if it went off.
@r.a.hassel8006
@r.a.hassel8006 4 года назад
yes that was a gas grill's LP tank venting. The way LP tanks are designed is that they have a vent valve to relieve the pressure when the gas rapidly expands too fast from something simple as the summer heat or in this case a fire. And as far as a BLEVE goes they are crazy rare, in 30 years of firefighting I only seen it once, it was a LP tank on the back of a fork lift and what happened was is the dimwit fork lift driver put the LP tank on the fork lift up side down so it could not vent, and when the tank started on fire because of all things, careless smoking, POOF! Anyways, the only way we would have a BLEVE here is if that tank can't vent the boiling gas fast enough, and there is a "tell" if a venting LP tank is about to BLEVE, that is it will start to "whistle" really loud, when you hear a burning LP tank start to "whistle"...... ah.. RUN!!! Lastly the thing that needed to be done here was rapid cooling of the tank with lots and lots of water, which the FD here eventually did.

This department exhibits very clearly that there is both a lack of training and food leadership. On the initial attack, it was both misdirected to an inconsequential area of the fire and poorly executed. The line was charged before being even close to an effective position' the subsequent attack at the B side rear was also commenced from a point too far away to be effective. Bot simply wasted the available water. Water continued to be sprayed onto areas where there was no real target to be extinguished. In this case, the fire as so far advanced hat the home was a constructive total loss at the time of arrival. The lack of effective direction and technique could serve as a training aid as an example of what NOT to do upon arrival and in th course of operatios.

No one seems to fight fires the way we used too, from the ground up, they squirt water on the siding & wait for the big aerial trucks, by the time they are in position, easy to fight fire, the roof is gone. They needed tankers, then just waste the water. The grass will look better now that its been watered!!

I am very glad that they tried to preserve the facade of the building. I guess just incase someone passed by and wanted to judge the neighborhood by what the homes looked like. I hope they realized that this house had a nice pool. I wonder, why did the the hose men water down the back of the home where there seemed to be no flame. I guess, they couldn't see over the smoke. Wow! Obviously, and thank God, a fire like that service by this department is very rare. The department was overwhelmed and seemed not to know where to start. Bill Williams that swimming pool is not a good option for the size of the fire. Now, I’m not saying that they did a good job on this fire by any means. The first officer on scene should have done a 360 and should have committed a 2 1/2 line to the rear on the fire. Not around the corner like we first saw. Also, in the beginning we saw there was a lack of manpower to do much of anything until mutual aid arrived with manpower and tankers. My observation, unfortunately, told me this home was not going to be saved. Bringing in the tankers and ladder truck for a surround and drown was the only viable option.

ok Mr. Wizard, lack of manpower, yeah well being that Millville is a volunteer fire company with only about 15 members and being that no one want to volunteer any more yeah man power is a problem, and what makes this worse is no "day time" availability, most volunteers work their real jobs during the day making them unavailable to make calls, or it takes them longer to make the call. And the only thing giving the fire service a bad name is you and all the other You Tube firefighters. So instead of hiding behind a puter key board why don't you put your money where your mouth is and join your local volunteer FD.

I'm just curious as to how many who comment are firefighters past or present. If not then why criticize what these men are doing. What exactly qualifies them as experts on fire extinguishing tactics or the behavior of fire in any given situation. There is no such thing as a typical fire.

@@jackh577 Most comments on RU-vid are from experienced firefighters but that doesn't make them privy to the Fireground conditions and resources in the videos. Sometimes things are obvious but in this case I think they just suffered from low manpower and lack of water in the initial stages. To be fair that building was lost before arrival. Sometimes you would just love to let it go, all in the best interests of safety and making the job of clearing the site so much easier. The number of times we have put hay barn fires out and then had to dig out the hay to get Goa deep seated fire in a building already lost when it would have been far better just to let it burn away. It just doesn't look good but if you could explain the logistics of it to the owners they would agree with you. Certainly the insurance company would as it would save a fortune in clearing the site for rebuilding. Quite honestly, if I lived in such a remote area in that type of building I would install a manual internal drencher/sprinkler system. The cost of a DIY system can be worth the peace of mind.

These rural FD's are hard to watch. They all seem to have all the right gear to do the job, everything but how to do it. It's obvious these are a bunch of volunteers. I don't mean to rag on the volunteers, I was one myself for a while at the beginning. I believe it's a case of not knowing what they don't know. It wasn't until I did get on a city dept. and went through the academy that I realized, "Holy crap, I could have got seriously killed playing around with fire, not knowing what I was doing". For home owners wanting to live out in the middle of nowhere, you get what you pay for depending on a volunteer dept.. Having all the right toys are essential, knowing what to do with them is another thing.

I'm not understanding why nobody had a pack on. If you're telling me because they're exterior only, okay. But they had on no gloves either. Furthermore that first line they had should have been more closer to make a bigger impact. Even the guy with the line on the side of the house had no pack on and God only knows what he was thinking, I mean head to the back and hit the bulk with that line. I get there was a propane tank burning but geesh. Between his line and the line in the front, that fire could have been Knocked down substantially.
@edsmetaldetecting31
@edsmetaldetecting31 4 года назад
Hose lines were not placed in the proper areas. Also in the back look like the fire was fed by a propane tank. I am thinking a volunteer fire dept and everyone is at work so lack of man power. With that being said they probably did the best they could.

They did pretty good but should have started the attack dead on from the back where the hot point was instead of the side. Would have had much more affect on stoping the spread from going as quick as it did and maybe saved some of the home. Other than the start of there attack they did well.
@charlesrudish9147
@charlesrudish9147 4 года назад
Well shortie, you have to have water to fight a fire, they obviously didn't. By the time they set up their water pools, the place was toast, literally. Living out in the boonies has it's benefits, fire protection isn't one of them. Another good argument for rural home sprinkler systems. Sad to see a nice house like this destroyed due to the lack of fire protection. Hope they were well insured.
@shortieaustin5211
@shortieaustin5211 4 года назад
@@charlesrudish9147 i completely agree. That is why i said what i said. Because just a couple minutes into the video you could see them on the side with there first attack but the hot point was on the back deck and at that time the fire had not yet broke wall. That is where they should have started to knock down as much as possible for the following trucks and try to keep it out of the structure as much as possible. The first unit on should always start at the hot point with the attack. ALWAYS. Unless you are not in the middle of nowhere and have multiple trucks then just attack the damn thing but in a rural area case being the first and only for a few minutes always start at the hot point with what ever water your truck can supply. If that was my department are chief and or Lt and sgt would have had are ass.

@shortieaustin5211
@shortieaustin5211 4 года назад
@@lawlessjff its possible. Good thinking. Are dept would would have did a cool down on the tank with our line as we were on the attack of the hot point. Some departments have different policys about flammables and hazmat. With Lp if the tank is already venting the best thing to do is a cool down from a safe distance to help prevent it from going like a grenade into somones head. Most of the time if they are already venting they won't blow but there is always a chance they could even after venting. It's very possible they were scared/worried of it or had a policy that would not allow them in that area.
