Thanks for sharing the breakdown for all of your patches. This has really helped me to understand the customization process to tweak for my own liking. Thanks!
Dude, thanks a ton for these incredible patches and in depth analysis of each one. These are without a doubt the best I've ever come across. If Line6 had it together, they'd make an offer to you to have these as standard presets. You're very kind in saying you weren't too happy with the factory offerings. I would have never purchased the 500 if I had only heard the stock patches - mostly garbage. I'd like to point out that your Clean twin patch sounds superb with acoustic guitars also. Rock on!
I finally got the seller of my used HD500X to "gift" the optional complete model packs he had purchased with his unit so I can hook up to Line 6 Edit without fear of having them labeled "unauthorized". I am grateful for your videos because you explain why your settings are done like they are. I find that adjusting for amp tone is as involved as actually learning to play. By the way, I enjoy your playing and teaching videos, your voice is good for teaching.
Thank you so much for this video and all the patches! I recently got a POD HD500X and a DT50 212. I am a bit overwhelmed by the system and was not too thrilled by the stock sounds. I really like a lot of the patches you created. Your video also helped me understand the system a little better. Keep up the awesome work!
His videos and patches are sensational!! For me, a beginner, they clarify many doubts. Congratulations on your dedication and collaboration. A great 2013 for you!
Thank you sir. Much hard work went into making these. It hasn't gone unnoticed. Nice playing too. EVH was the reason I picked the instrument up, and you've nailed his tone from the days when VH was still a thing.
Dude, you rock! Awesome Playing and Awesome ear and settings! Just got the 500X, gotta try your patches. Hopefully it works. Thanks for the great videos and "Lessons" ;-)
Just got my 500x, and downloaded several of your patches. Very good, such a timesaver and far better than most of what line6 put in the "best of hd" catagory. Thx man!
Dude! The quality of this video is way high from the amount of detail to the awesome guitaring to the pix of pedals that the virtual ones are based on. Good frickin job dude!
Hey thanks man, I enjoy the creative process and try to produce vids that are nice to look at... I hope to have another HD500 patches video done in the next month or so. Rock on!
PDXguitarfreak Thank you!!! Finally someone did a video of tones built with the HD500 that sound like something you would actually use. I watched tons of vids on this rig and NOTHING had tones that sounded "real." Line 6 should pay you a sales commission because you just sold a HD500X for them! Keep up the great work!
You are so right about the expression pedal. The pedal opened up a whole other world with the POD HD that everyone who owns one should experience. Big return for a small investment! Thanks again for your great patches! (especially the clean ones)
Great work there! I've just recently purchased the HD500, but haven't really had much of a chance to play with it, still waiting for my new pickups to arrive. At least I can experience the pod hd500 vicariously!
Way over my head as I'm only now learning that rock stardom isn't plug-and-play. However, a ton of useful information to help me think of new directions. Thanks for posting.
Dude, I finally picked up a used hd500 today and one of the first patches I downloaded was 'Atomic Punk' from your patches. Holy crap it sounds awesome! Before I knew it I was playing riffs from the 1st album with a big smile on my face! Thanks!
WOW__Thanks VERY much for the video and the outstanding patches; you are quite the Effects-Alchemist! Really-really sweet and accurate sounds and so very helpful in your careful descriptions. Will always be thankful for your meticulous efforts and instruction; a real gem among all the guitar vids. Thanks Once Again PDXguitarfreak...
Hi Dave, Just downloaded all your patches to my HD500. Absolutely superb tones mate. Had to turn the treble down and bass up on all of them because they sounded way to thin through my gear but once I had done that WHOAAA !!! I was using a Wampler Pinnacle for VH stuff and it is excellent but you have bettered it by getting that brown sound and being able to switch the phase, boost in/out. Nice cleans as well. Great work, thank you.
Thanks for the Tips Dave! Using the exp pedal to bring up gain and mids and volume works great. Sound man at last show went on and on about my Solo tone! Alot less toe tapping as well!
I don't own a POD HD500, but I watched the whole thing just for the killer riffs. That one at 6:18 is really great, especially the picking stuff from 6:30 on. Great video, Dave. Makes me want an HD500!!
Gr8 vid man! I have Pod HD live and have thought about getting this HD500 !!! With NAMM just around the corner ?? Your patches are excellent bro ! If I get the 500 I will download you rig with many thanks man :)
Got the new pod 500x last week. After listening to the presets I thought this was à big mistake. Than I read à lot of stories on the internet on this rig and loaded Tons of custom tones. But it was not untill I found your video and patches that the pod came alive! Better than any sound before (have used pods since the beginning). Carry on your great work, maybe à Gilmour patch?
very cool dave .....I bought the Ivory 2 pianos and I had to really dive in as well and get the best out of it .....you would think every patch on your new system would be amazing ....but these companys really miss the boat with their products. If you don't break a sweat ....you will miss out...Love the way you instructed this.
Thank you for this video. Your descriptions are very clear and concise and that is appreciated by this so-so guitar player. I am mainly the rhythm guitar and keyboard player for my band but do a solo and fills now and then. We do a good variety of 80's thru today but a lot of older stuff. I haven't found a great spot to find specific patches such as the Watson/Gillis sounds on Don't Tell Me.. or Lukather, Schon, etc. I'll check the rest of ur videos but any suggestions on good patch sites?
Thanks bro, you are kind... and I agree about holding back a little on the gain for a good 80s hard rock tone. That was definitely my intent here. I'd rather have a rhythm tone that is sensitive to how hard you hit the strings rather than over-saturation. Rock on!
Hey thanks man - I have gotten almost all of my tones from the CustomTone website that Line6 runs. As you have probably experienced, the challenge is weeding through tons of boring patches to find good ones. The only other site I can recommend is Glen DaLaune's website - he has some really nice patches (the best I have heard)
Indeed, Those are two tones that are very hard to nail. I have tried a lot of the custom tones in my old POD x3 but none could really match the original. That said I have not been able to create them myself either. I will check your last video more thorough to get a good idea of what you are doing with the rig.Keep me posted.
LOL thanks man. As much as I love the HD500, I found the rock/metal patches that it came with to be weak. Maybe next time, Line6 will hire an experienced rock guitar player to help. Kudos to them for creating the CustomTone page though - that's where I learned a lot by looking at other people's patches.
Sorry- re-reading my comment it seemed a bit critical! Your patches and playing are great! Stoner plexi and Daves main tone 3 are two of the best patches i've found on youtube (including GD patches I paid for...). Stoner plexi really came into its own when I adjusted the volume knob on my strat. Will let you know re decent AC/DC tone if I manage it.
Thanks! That's a great question, Rick, but unfortunately I haven't tried the Line 6 212 so I can't answer that. With any amp, you will want to tweak to your own liking. I recommend starting with all of the tone knobs on the amp set to five and then adjusting as needed from there. Whether you adjust the amp or the patches is up to you. However, I prefer to keep the amp stationary with all tone knobs on 5 and let the POD do the work. :)
If you want to use it as a pre-amp, plug the '1/4'' out' cable from the pod in to the FX loop return on the amp, This way it will 100% bypass the amps pre-amp and treat the pod as a pre-amp running straight in to the amps power amp, which is not as coloured as running through the amps clean channel. Then if you want the option of being able to use the amps pre-amp you can use the 4 cable method with the loop on the pod. This way you can enable and disable the amps pre-amp patch by patch.
Hi Ken, in my 30 years of guitar playing and being a huge VH fan, I have actually never sat down and tried this song (I'm completely embarrassed to say that LOL). However, a RU-vid friend called Craigman65 shared with me his settings, but I haven't tried it yet. He stated the following "analog delay 400ms, 31%feedback, 46%mix, bass and treb of the repeat is 50% and pre config... cavernous reverb at 50%... add some chorus too." I will definitely learn this sometime this year and do a patch :)
Hi Matt, yes, you can. I ALWAYS create my patches on the computer, because it's 1000x easier than trying to create things by working with the tiny little interface on the actual POD unit. While you have the computer connection via USB in place, and once you have created the patch, click on the Save button on the POD unit and it will then let you pick where you want to assign the patch on the actual unit.
Hi there, I thought I already answered this comment but perhaps I'm going crazy :) In all of the amps that I have ever owned, it pretty much works the way that I'm describing. In fact, in my Peavey JSX amp manual, it describes it this way too, i.e., as a + (plus) or - (minus) boost
Love your tones and your playing. Thanks for putting these out there. Any chance you have a Michael Schenker tone from the Strangers in the Night record? Thanks again for putting this stuff out. I'm trying to learn my new 500x.
Thank you! Open POD HD500 Edit software and then open file you want to edit. Click on mid-screen tab that says CONTROLLERS. Click on MODEL drop-down menu and choose the 1st Treadplate, and then from PARAMETER drop-down menu choose CH VOL. Put theMINIMUM knob on 44%, and then set the MAXIMUM knob to something higher (perhaps 54%). Go back to the MODEL drop-down menu and choose the 2nd Treadplate. Then go to PARAMETER and choose CH VOL again. MINIMUM is at 50% and then choose a level for MAXIMUM.
Hey man, thanks! Until I got the HD500 I was tube snob myself LOL. The patch you are referring to is called "Angus ver 2" and should still be on the site. I really dig mixing the JCM and Plexi heads together. I am working on a another tone using those two that I'll eventually post too. My goal it to get a tone that's a little more aggressive and fat than the Angus tone, but still light enough on the gain to be touch sensitive... kind of late 70s / early 80s cranked Marshall.
Cool, thanks for subscribing! :) As for the expression pedal question, I really don't know anything about the Mission Engineering one.... I have the floor HD500 with the built-in pedal.
Thanks so much for taking the time to create and share your knowledge and settings with the HD 500. I was struggling to come up with the tones I was looking for which basically include a great clean and a great rhythm/ lead tone.I based most of my patches off the Variac Marshall from the X3 Live and almost gave up on my HD-500 til I stumbled acroos your patches. I loved the variac!!! You have hit a home run brutha! Do you leave the speaker simulation on when playing thru your half stack?
