This is a sound comparison demo between POD HD500X and POD HD500. The presets used are exactly the same on both units!
Recently I bought POD HD500X to upgrade my POD HD500 and I decided to make a sound comparison demo,because I noticed some sound difference between the two units! I made research and I found what kind of CPUs are used in both units.The PODs are using 32 bit/40 bit floating point processors,so that's the reason for the sound difference! When you use the CPU with floating point function,there is a limit,when you reach some point(for example 80% CPU usage) the CPU starts to "round" the values and the sound becomes "weaker"or let say not what it's meant to be.So you don't get 20% more power only for the stompboxes,that you may or may not add,but with this 20% you will reach the CPU limit later on and your sound will be better overall :-) The POD HD500X sounds much more clear to me,than the HD500.
One more thing! I use FW 1.71 on my Variax guitar,because I don't like the sound of the acoustic guitars after the update!

I've used a HD500 for 3 years and bought a 500X and used it tonight for the first time on a gig thru the same EV LiveX 12's. I loaded my same patches and my singer and I noticed the 500X sounded better. So this comparison is accurate.

I guess you're right about the patches exchange between both units,but I'm pretty sure,that you can use HD500X presets on HD500,just you have to rename the extension of the file to .h5e Of Course if you've made some very CPU consuming patches on HD500X they'll not work on HD500,or just not with all the things on in the chain,but they will work in some way :-) You can try it.If I remember correctly I tried it and everything was working fine :-) Cheers! :-)

I have the 500x and the Jtv 59 and agree but the compression on RU-vid makes it only slightly noticeable ... Nice demo!

I had a HD500 for 7 years and now I have a HD500X. The differences are very clear, the HD500X sounds full-bodied then the HD500. It's a bit, but is the "bit" that in the HD500 is missing. It becomes clearer when you play and not just listen.

I clicked on this video for the comparison between the two units and came to the conclusion that....... Andrioman is a really good Guitarist. While each unit did have a tonal difference, that difference was lost to me when I started to listen to how they were being played through and I thought they both sounded great. So having watched a ton of videos (This one being the last) and reading a heap of reviews, I decided to buy a HD500 with gig case that was being sold for $350.00 NZD on a local trade site. @Andrioman cheers for producing the awesome content mate 😁

I just bought mine (the hd 500x )and had the eband little device to play around with and enjoyed the boss effects but it was drowned out when I tried to play with others and their amps.That won't be a problem any more!

Using the effects loop & throwing in a different ir setup will make them both sound pretty damn close to what’s out there now.

I just bought a HD500 for less than £100. Got to be a bargain. They still sound great. The difference in a live situation would be lost in the mix. Studio is totally different.

I also bought padded cases for both. Less than £450 for a gig ready set up is amazing value and If I buy another headrush for £209 I can have a stereo rig for less than £700.

on some song snips the X is crisper & clearer. On others the 500 has a nicer treble roll off & note definition. Just depends on what you like. The extra DSP sure doesn't hurt either.

Great Playing, The SHARCs don't actually operate that way, all the math is done before it lets you load an operator or 'block' if it can't calculate the result it won't load, it doesn't wait for a signal to start the calculations, unlike a CPU, which can do if told to, hence larger latency and crackles, etc. when you use a PC or MAC to do this kind of work, the difference is in I/O and ADC, this isn't done on the SHARC & as far as I'm aware, they need an external ADC, Good demo of the units and an interesting topic. The difference in output signal sounds great on both tones, neither appears to be 'better' just slightly different here and there.

Thanks for your comment dude! I guess you're right, because I'm not so competent with the exact mechanisms and the difference between the PC and the PODs, that's why I assumed they work the same way :) But there is a slight difference in the sound and in my opinion the HD500X sounds a bit clearer, I'm not sure if this is because of some difference in ADC or just the clock speed of the processor... :) Anyways... I don't have any of those processors anymore, but they were pretty good for the job I was using them... Cheers! :)

Thank you for your comment. It is the major deciding factor between the HD500 and HD500(x). The power of suggestion is the litmus test for the comments section. The author should edit this upload with your correct information. Any information on DAC floating 32 bit processing.. is it better to use the floating point selection or the 32 bit none-floating processing.

+Tony Inosencio I'm glad you did it bro! There is a setting in your computer to here the headphones trough the HD500 you just need to select the right device in your sound menu,because if you've installed the HD500X drivers lastly,your computer will probably start that driver as default device,so you just have to change your default device to POD HD500 in your OS :-)

Thanks for watching my videos! :-) At the moment I play live every night with a band and I use the POD with my DT50 112 Combo(The Dream Rig I Have the JTV59 Guitar as well).It sounds very good.I tried to use the POD with some VOX combo and it sounded very good as well. The guitar processors are not true bypass. If you want good sounding digital processor for reverbs,delays e.t. maybe you have to thing about TC Electronics :-) But it very depends of what kind of gear you have and what you want to achieve. For my work,the POD does the job,but for more money you could search for something really professional :-)

Andrioman Hey bro thanks so much for the patches. I have a few minutes to play w/ a few of them. I noticed that most have the FX Look effect in one of the effects blocks. I am curious to know what you use them for. Many of the patches i have tested require me to turn off the FX Loop to get the sound of of my variax.

Craig Baker Sorry brother I just forgot to tell you,that you have to turn it OFF in order to be able to play with the sounds! I use Wah pedal in there,which is Dunlop Q95.That's why I have it always in front of the chain :-)

I feel like it's a difference in cab modelling the x sounds more like an actual cabinet where the old one has that modelled over eq'ed sound less like an actual cab more like a filter trying to mimic a cab. A slightly more nasal and compressed tone.

Clean tones sound great, but why did you cut the mids so far on the heavy tones? The guitar is a mid-range based instrument, those distortion tones sound very sleepy to me.

My question is. Is it worth the extra 200 bucks? Im trying to upgrade from a POD Xt live and I believe that they both are quite close together on tone. unless you crank it up to more the 50% you will notice the difference, but for a person at home / studio the HD500 would be just perfect.

Well... defiantly the HD series are better than XT Live (I had X3 Live and I tried HD Live also),but you are right... for home and some studio work HD500 is quite good enough! The benefits I've got with HD500X were (in my opinion) the better switch design (mechanical they are the same sh...t :) ) and of course better CPU performance leading to a bit better sound... those the reasons why I upgraded to HD500X,but in my opinion 200 bucks more are too much and I think that you'll be perfectly fine with HD500X :)

@@Andrioman just sold my xt and jump one a x3 live.... blew up 2 capacitors... (same one) fixed it and discovered that the power supply the guy gave me wasn't the right one. For 50 bucks I dont care I'll buy a PS and I want to try this pedal.... if I cant get the tone I want (randy rhoads) it will be on the chopping block for sale.

I think hd500x has brighter sound it's not better always many of us don't prefer bright sound.... for instance i think the last riff (Nothing els matter) with hd500 is better... But don't forget you always by using of a old cab or a cab with warm tone (orange or measa) and eq can reach to better sound than a amp (or multi effect ) with dark sound... Indeed the bright sound can be changed to a dark sound but you can't tweak.a dark and muddy sound because often it's not has enough resolution...

Nmn Mnm Yes my friend you are right! The HD500X had more definition, because of the CPU clock speed, that's why it sounds a bit brighter or overall cleaner than the HD500...

As a soloist, how would either of these go sound wise with both my 1. Acoustic guitar to the 1/4" input and 2. Vocals into XLR input (seperate EQ and reverb needed for each). I'd also like to connect my 3. Roland SPD ONE kick drum pad into the AUX in (no effects needed)! Then direct to the PA speaker with 1 mono XLR lead. Would that work and sound good? Want to get rid of the mixer :).

Clint White Well... I think it's possible to do that. I'm not sure only about the AUX if you can control it's volume,but the other things should work with no problems. You can pan both paths far left and right and use them as a different sound sources and I think that the AUX (your Kick) will come through both Left and Right channels. I don't remember if the aux is a separate MIX or it should go through the chain... You have to check that. I sold my Line 6 units and I don't have the ability to try it :) Cheers! :)

Clint White One more thing... If I remember correctly, you can't use separate outputs (1/4 and XLR) for different paths. Both outputs are linked together,so you have only One stereo output,but you could use the FX Loop out as a second output and you can make the chain for the guitar to end up on that out instead of the XLRs... :)

Thanks for all the info! With further investigation it seems i wouldnt be able to use the AUX as the kick input as the 2nd input can only be assigned to EITHER the XLR or the AUX (i think haha) however putting the kick through the effects loop (on the guitar patch perhaps) after the effects will work. Or mp3 in!

Clint White I was using two separate signal chains with my HD500X,one for Ac.Guitar and other for electric,so this scenario work's... You only have to figure out how you could possibly use your Kick. I suggest you to just try to use the mp3 input as a third one maybe this would work :)

@@naveenkumard1052 The only zoom I've used was the Zoom 9000 and that was 20 years ago. It was one of the best guitar processors for that time. I don't know the new one's,but I've heard one (if not the biggest) zoom processor(the one with double expression pedal and I didn't like it... I also don't play with Line 6 gear anymore... I've switched to Boss GT-100 which in my opinion is far ahead in almost every aspect than POD HD series...

@@naveenkumard1052 It doesn't have only XLR outputs,but it has programmable amp control switch which I use a lot when I play with my tube amp via 4CM and I think that it has as many amp simulations as the HD series. I have comparison video in my channel which explains everything... :)

Nando Pires Hello my friend! That's one of the reasons I don't use others patches and I make my one! I've tried more than 100 patches and none of them were working for me! The reasons are many,but most important- different guitar and different playing! I don't know how to help you with that :) The advice I could give you is: Try to adjust the gain settings on each patch, because I assume you play with different guitar with different pickups. That could bring you close to the original tones... I hope that's helpful! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me! Cheers! :)

But I was left with a doubt ... when you say that changing the file extension which you left the link there on the site of the line6, the same is not working, this is my doubt ... the patcher is without sound ... and the others are ... example: if I select your patcher it does not produce sound, if I move to one of my output ... do you still have these patcher saved somewhere for pod hd 500? e-mail : comandolive@gmail.com

Hey! I'm not sure, but I guess somewhere around 200-250€ used... To be honest I don't like anu of those processors. Especially if you come from a stompbox board and real amp... @@Andrioman the reasons i'm looking into multiprocessor units are flexibility(many effects covered) and I can Use it as a direct recording unit using headphones. My main issue with my current board and amp is the loud noise. I can't use it at home and it only sounds great at high volume

@@bilalnachabeh It was the same reason why I decided to go with processors, but for me turned out that the Line6 stuff doesn't felt good... I was planning 7 years with POD HD500 and 500X, but finally I found the processor for me amd it is tha BOSS GT-100... If you play more Rock and Metal style the HD500X will be good enough, but I play many different styles, where I need dynamic clean sounds and also good overdriven sounds... In my opinion the GT-100 is the best in this price range... :)

I've been playing with your patches and my acoustic model doesn't sound like yours at all. The acoustic model at the neck position is not any good on my jtv. I get a very deep unpleasant sound on certain frets. Your jtv 59+hd500x sounds awesome.

Not much... Check out the description, there is some info... :) I don't have any of these units anymore, but they were almost identical as I remember, just few differences, like the switches (only outside) and a bit more clock speed of the processor 33MHz to be exact 😁

There's no difference can be heard in this demo because the difference between the two is not the tone or the kinds of effects but the options or added functionalities on hd500x that you can't find in hd500. So I think this "VS Demo" is void.

:-) Thanks for your comment bro! Don't get me wrong,but I'm not going to spend more than 500$ for an digital guitar processor ;-) For me the Line 6 products are very good compromise,but nowhere near to professional gear (except their Guitar wireless systems).For me it's not worth to spend big amount of money on digital gear. And to be honest I don't see very big sound change in Helix,yes it's better than HD500,but not 1000$ better, you know what I mean :-)

In my country 500X costs 150 dollars more than 500, I don't think the difference justify the extra !!

Well...I'm not sure that you could use your patches from X3 Live! I used to have X3 live before and I can tell that they are different. I don't think that you'll get DSP Limit if you copy your patches on POD HD500,but if I was about to upgrade from X3 Live,I'd go for POD HD500X :-)

Andrioman i am using a x3 live at the moment and i m thinking of shifting to the hd500x, but i m seeing that the x3 contains way more amp models than the hd500x . Will i regret upgrading to the 500x ? Can you point me in the right direction ? The pros and cons ?

Hey! I used to have "POD X3 Live" few years ago. I bought it because I wanted to play some gigs with less gear (I used to play with pedal-board,rack system and speaker cab) Unfortunately the pod didn't sound good to me for live performance back then and I sold it few months later.After 3-4 years I had to buy something smaller to play with,because I didn't have the option to bring all my equipment by Airplane :-) at that moment I decided to try the new "POD HD500" and I was surprised how good the POD was sounding live, way-way better than the POD X3 Live (This is just my opinion).Now I have the complete "Dream Rig" by Line 6 and I'm very satisfied with it :-) I think,that no matter how many amp modeling POD X3 has the POD HD500 is much better sounding. The only downside of the POD HD500 vs POD X3 Live is if you want to use it for recording sessions.With POD HD you can not use POD Farm plug-in to re-amp the guitars in the future,which is very disappointing for alot of people including me,but if this is not so important to you I'd suggest you to buy the POD HD500X :-) Cheers bro! :-)

in your comparison demo between POD HD500X and POD HD500 you don't use the same pedals config in the presets, and appreciate the real differences is not possible.

Sound same. But you can find better sounds in pod hd500 x. Because more options

You need a good quality headphones or studio monitors to be able to hear the difference. And the options are absolutely the same,what you have in HD500X you have it in HD500. The only difference is because of the clock speed,you are able to put more effects on the chain...

More option means ,More Effect can be add for 500x. Sometimes not enough. And this is really good possibility. I couldnt hear any differences. But if you add more effect you can create different sounds. This is really good option

Ppl put that as a plus in helix. Sure more fx on one bank but you can switch to another. Silly sales pitch and realistically offers more and ppl are hearing these cleaner tones have a harshness to them. Ppl constantly rant about a guitar for 1000 compared to 1500... You are paying triple the price for not alot more. You can eq either and dont need a fancy screen when playing live etc. I added a bbe sonic stomp to my pod was great. No need to be paying 1000_1200 more for helix. I had a hd300. Was awesome. Will get 500x. Wahs crap. Get a dunlop 95q

Jajajaja es ridículo si están hechas con lo mismo. Lo único que cambia es que en la X podes meter 2 pedales mas en la cadena y son mejores sus botones. Suenan igual ambas jajaja

+HanoiRocker85 No,but I've seen some demos and I have a friend who used to have Eleven Rack and I'm not impressed :-) Anyways,finally I decided to go back to the basics and play again with all tube amps and none digital gear ;-)

La pod hd500 y la hd500x son iguales en cuanto al sonido... Lo único que cambia es la memoria de la unidad y la estética

They are almost equal in sound, but not equal and it is not the memory that's the difference,but the CPU clock speed ;-) which is essential for that kind of units ;-) The HD500X is a bit clearer than HD500,but you need studio monitors to hear the difference or at least some good studio headphones...

The x 20% more power better foot knobs.but still dont no how long it will last. Iike it's made from china. These u cheep materials. Guaranteed to fail what ever they make cars music u name it. It will break

It's as bad as the previous model, just the look of the switches is different, the inside is exactly the same,so it's a peace of crap again... :)

Я рад, что урвал однажды для себя HD500. Если HD500x ничем кроме интерфейса не отличается, зачем платить больше? Для отличной плотной мощной работы хватит и HD300, так что, захотели себе HD500x, подумайте 50 раз... все заявленные новинки в нем не работают. Это тот же проц, только в профиль.
