I have a neck thru tele that does exactly this. It's fun to play. Action is a touch high, but not terrible. Was thinking of trying a fix, but I may leave it, A good friend of mine once imparted the truest of guitar sayings ever: "No matter how much you want the instrument to be just a guitar, in the end, it wants to be a piece of wood and will do what it does."

release the tension on the truss rod the use heat not steam (heat gun) using dowels and carpenter clamps technique with using a straight edge it should repair the twist. Then allow the neck to set. After releasing the neck check it 5 days later to see if it moved back. Then level the frets, crown them and should be good to go for restrings and set up.

Hello Ben, great info! I had success with a twisted neck about 5 years ago and what worked for me was clamping the neck down tightly near the body, it was an acoustic so didn't want to take the neck off, the twist was up near the nut, I used the low E string and ran it from the peg down to a nail driven into the side of my bench, I used a bubble level and kept cranking the key until the twist was gone and bubble level centered as it was throughout the rest of the neck, then applied 125 degrees of heat for 24 hours, then humidified it another 24 hours in that same condition still under pressure from the low E string tied to a nail holding it in position, finally after 48 hours removed the clamps and low E string that was used to hold the twist straight and it worked! I still have that guitar and 5 years later the twist has never came back. Hope this helps someone, it worked for me and I saw another guy to very much the same here on RU-vid on an electric guitar.

A twist towards the treble end of the nut honestly sounds like it would be a joy to play. You should try a limited edition run of this, perhaps coupled with fanned frets just to see how it would play. I bet there are others out there who think the same and would buy something like this up in a heartbeat.

Putting balanced tension strings might help fix that over time....standard guitar strings pull stronger on the low-E side than on the high-E side. Equating the tension might help revert the twist... More drastically, you could maybe bias the tension towards the high-E e.g. by taking the high-E,B and G from an 11-50 set and the D,A and low-E from a standard 9-42 set...Tune it to pitch and leave it for a period of time....

Good advice. I just picked up a 1981 Carvin DC150CM and it has a tiny twist towards the headstock end. Luckily it's rotated in the 'good' direction....I will see it as an asset and not a problem now!....being a 1981 I think it's safe to say that it's settled.

Hi Ben, I noticed that Fender has uncut strings and just wanted to say watch out because those can poke you in the eye if you're not careful. It had happened to a guitar player I met at one point and from the relative sharpness of them they can damage your cornea unless you wear eye protection or just cut the strings soon as you put them on. Thank you for making these videos, always insightful and fascinating

so recently dropped my guitar and when I picked it up I noticed that when I play it makes a very loud buzz noise from the top of my guitar specially when I play the open strings. I've spent hours looking at every part no loose or broken pieces, I've tried adjusting the truss doesn't seem to be the issue as the noise is not even from the strings touching the fret board, the only very strange thing is that when hold the wood where the tuners are mounted it almost doesn't buzz anymore again the buzz is not from the tuners either and I can't see any crack on the neck or anywhere. I'm so confused I would really appreciate it if u could at least tell me what the problem is!!

I recently found that I really enjoy playing guitars with compound radius fretboards. I have an old cheap stratocaster neck that I'd like to put a stainless steel set on. Philadelphia Luthier Supply have a has a service that will send you pre-bent frets so I thought I'd use those. So here's my question do I need to do anything to the actual fingerboard after I take out the old frets and before I put in the new ones

I was searching this topic, oddly didn't check this channel first (at this point, I should just look here first for everything). I'm converting a five-string bass to a fretless, and the donor neck has a slight twist. I think I'm going to try the method you described here, but with the veneer pieces I put in to replace the frets. I'll just make the pieces a hair thicker on one side, maybe with a slight taper (wedge), so when they expand with gluing they'll push the twist back slightly. After that, I should be able to finish it with the sanding beam. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for the great videos as always!

I have a 4 string bass neck slightly twisted to the g string side at the head stock and about half way downthe neck, however the heel pocket end is flat . Its not a complete twist like you were referring to the on the white telly. I bought this bass for 30$ no strings and missing nut and stuff and didnt get to play it. So I dont know if the slight twist will even have any noticeable effect at all. But I was liking your thinking about twisted would be more comfortable.

I fixed a twisted neck once by taking off the strings, forgetting about it, then a year and a half later it was straight and I put new strings on .10 set down from the.13 that it used to have. I hear it's still good. Thin necks can't handle too much tension..

What a strange coincidence! I just fixed my old dot, she had a huge twist in the neck, probably bought on over the last decade or so since the neck break. More relief on the treble side, due to the twist, made it impossible to get a decent setup. My solution was to remove the frets, flatten the fretboard, and then re-radius it. Much to my delight she's playing great now. Cosmetically not the best, but it was a straightforward enough fix and the slightly irregular depth fretboard isn't really noticeable unless you really hunt for it, especially as much of the material was taken off the treble side. Taking the fretboard off sounds the best bet, but as you say, and I agree, taking steam to an already twisted neck is asking for trouble! The idea about straightening the neck with the fret tangs is an interesting one, great in theory, I'd love to hear if anyone has had any success. Thanks for the videos, they are a great resource.

Hi Ben, great video, love the ideas in dealing with a twisted neck. Especially about the neck with too much relief. I have a Martin D17M with too much relief. I believe the neck has moved as much as it will, it's a couple of years old now ( bought it new in 2014). I began to have relief issues shortly after purchase (even with adjusting the truss rod, the neck was constantly moving) and pretty much put it away til I could do some research as to how to solve my guitar's problem. This is the first video I have found that provides some useful information in rectifying this issue, I plan on trying a re-fret as you recommend (crimping the tangs) and will let you know how this works. Thanks! p.s. I'm not a stranger to repairs:)

My son pushed over my Ibanez RG Prestige and put a dent in the finish on top where the arm rest is, which also put a crescent shaped "crack" in the finish abt 7mm in diameter and maybe one mm deep or less. Unfortunately, Ibanez will never sell their paint (cosmic blue). Do you think I could possibly wet sand the finish with 1500 grit, then polish with a rubbing compound to get the crack/dent out?

Is teak a viable option for making a fretboard? I have made a guitar with a three piece teak neck(neck through), pine wings with teak cap. The teak I have is extremely old.
@nikkwiatkowski1870
@nikkwiatkowski1870 8 лет назад
+Anish Kolhatkar Can't see why not, we lay Teak decking on boats for it's hard-wearing properties so it should stand up to a bit of string wear - IF you can successfully glue it.. I used some leftover Teak to make a fingerboard last year. (Needed a bass in a hurry, so used up whatever was laying about) It was well keyed up and degreased with plenty of acetone, can't remember if i used polyurethane or epoxy, but it's lasted thus far. Of course using either of these glues means you'll destroy your neck if you ever want to replace said fingerboard, but i don't know if i'd trust more traditional glues with Teak. Anyone care to comment?

I think you can get there eventually with small truss rod adjustments and going with heavier gauge strings to pull the neck back or side to side and letting it settle. Where to start with this ? 2005 Squier Strat, the neck looked like an elf slipper last summer, probably had a gentle twist in it, may still have some virtually indiscernible twist too. Truss rod was adjusted several times. I went with 9.5's instead of 9's. Researching D'Addario's string tensions, the heavier the set, whether they're hybrid bass & treble sides or just a complete 1/2 to full step in gauges, the string tension is going to be 18 lbs more tension (9's-10's) as a complete set when it's tuned E2,A2,D3,G3,B3,E4. Imagine the tension differences going from 9's to 12's ? I went from 85 to 91 lbs of tension with 9.5's from 9's. Going 10's from 9's, string tension goes from 85 to 103 lbs as a set. Moisturizing the wood helped too, never use water, fretboard natural oil to re-condition the fretboard was my method. If drying out the wood caused the warpage, the wood was dried out in a kiln to get the moisture out of the neck & body when it was made.

It had a very similar twist to the tele neck in the video. I used Jescar EVO Gold frets, crimped the tang on the opposite side I wanted raised a smidgen and it flipping worked!!! It isn't perfect but before i couldn't get a straight edge with fret notches to stand on fretboard on the high E side...now it will stay without falling over. And what should i do when my neck is twisted in different way? For example high E side is straight (0,1 mm bow) and on low E side i have 1 mm bow at 12-th fret Neck is made out of little flame maple with no skunk stripe but with separate fretboard with a classic fender style truss rod Also neck might be a little to thick, but that is debatable. Hey Ben, Just a thought as you are mentioning basses (which I have noticed you don't mention very often), are there any different fundamental techniques you use when building basses as opposed to guitars, or is it purely a case of thinking in different scale lengths and string spacing? Cheers, Lee
@RatFinkRod
@RatFinkRod 9 лет назад
I've done work on guitars with twisted necks before and never had to any straightening. It's very simple, use a strait-edge and adjust the truss rod so the neck is straight along the MIDDLE of the frets, then check both sides (hi-E, lo-E) for straightness. If everything's straight all you need to do is adjust the height of both ends of the pickups and bridge saddles to match the continued twist of the neck.

How can I fix the twist on my 1960s Hofner bass violin? I don't want to remove the frets or even think about going near it with sandpaper or a planer? The twist is in the 'undesirable' direction. Someone suggested letting it sit with the low E string slack, the A string slightly more taut, and the other two under normal tension. In theory they said this should remove the twist. What about removing the strings completely and letting it sit? The tension of the strings is what causes the neck to twist in the first place isn't it?
@e1cycle
@e1cycle 5 лет назад
No not really , Its the wood grain its self. Take the strings off and see what happens with some aggressive truss rod adjustments . It might level some of it out.

Please flame away if you disagree but if a neck is so warped that it needs fixed, is it not cheaper and better to just buy/build/order a new neck? Considering 1. the wood might just be prone to warping, ie bad luck, 2. the time and effort spent is not worth while 3. having a pro doing it will probably cost more than a good new neck?

I know of several guitar repairmen that uses an oven for straightening a crooked neck. I think a couple of hours at low heat, and not necessarily having to remove the frets. This might work best on vintage non trussrod necks. Afterwards it's clamped to a straight board for x hours while cooling down. I don't have any personal experience with this technique though.

I don't see everything, we've grown a bit big for that... however. There are not many options to fix a twisted neck, if it doesn't affect playability too much it is a case of making the best of it. You could remove the frets, flatten the fretboard and the refret if you fancy a realy big job.. As to cleaning the fretboard, crimsons fretboard cleaner and restorative are non toxic and very very good.. alternatively use lemon oil or similar.. thanks for subscribing. B

I don't think my bass neck is twisted but the strings don't aligned correctly down the neck going from the bridge to the nut. The high E is right on the edge of the neck and the low E is too far to the right. The owner that had it before me did have the body coated in truck bed enamel spray and I wonder if that is what the cause of the misalignment is. He did it because it's an Ironbird and those tend to get dinged up and chipped at the points
@CrimsonCustomGuitars

sounds like the neck is in at a sideways angle, the extra paint could be the issue indeed.. I say remove the neck and try and put it back with the strings aligned properly which may mean using a file to remove some excess paint..

Is there guidance out there on how to actually design and build a twisted neck instrument? I can't really visualise how you would do it. You mentioned on an earlier video that a twisted and fan-fretted neck would be very ergonomic, but the only people I can find making those are Little Guitar Works with their Torzal line; Google turns up nothing on how to make them yourself - and do they or anyone else actually hold a patent on the idea of a twist-neck guitar?

His ideas are very drastic. I had a twist in a les paul like neck from the 3rd fret. I conditioned the fret board the day before with a Gibson fret board conditioner. Then i loosened the truss rod with two turns. After that I tightened the strings on the side of the guitar i wanted to upward (G B E) from the front of the guitar. I then loosened the other three strings from the side i wanted to move downward (E A D). I placed the guitar in it's hard shell case and dampened the fret board and left a damp sponge in plastic bag with holes in the case (i did this to avoid the wood cracking and to make it more supple). I placed a small folded book on the side i wanted to move downward (E A D) and closed the case. The case created a downward force to move the neck. Like a vice. After an hour i took it out of the case and tightened the strings more on the side i wanted to twist upward (G B E). I then tried to twist the neck by hand in the direction i mentioned above. After a few minutes the twist in the neck disappeared. Now I put the guitar back into standard tuning and tightened the truss rod two turns (back to it's original state). I let it sit and settle for an hour in it's hard shell case.

please post how this holds after a reasonable amount of time. I have a mid 70s' yamaha fg165s with a twisted neck. these guitars were laminate but played and sounded incredible for their cost. High action so I mostly played bluegrass and blues slide with it and would love to get it back in playing condition again.

I think you may have your fret fix backwards. Shouldn’t the thicken part of the frets be on the high strings at the nut and the low strings at the base of the neck?
@NeoRichardBlake
@NeoRichardBlake 3 года назад
No, the compression from the frets with push that part of the neck into a back-bow by selectively slightly widening half the fret slot, so it will drop the high parts of the twist back. If you imagine on a larger scale, hammering a wedge into a crack, it will push the crack apart and open. Does that make sense?

Hi Ben and the rest of Crimson Custom Guitars, I have questions about dead spots - certain notes on the neck with significantly shorter sustain than their neighbours. I mean real dead spots caused by the guitar dampening some specific frequencies, NOT strings fretting out due to uneven frets, action set too low and other setup issues. Are they common? I've been to the shop and played some guitars and all of them had dead spots to some extent (sometimes not even "dead", just "weak"), but I may just have been unlucky. I currently own a guitar that has significant dead spots and think of selling it and getting another one. Although I'm afraid the next guitar will have them too :/. Are there any remedies for dead spots? My guitar has 3 of them: 15th fret on E and B strings (G and D notes), and on 11th fret on G string (F# note). I've tried so far attaching some weights to the headstock and that helped a bit with the first two, but the third one, the F# just moved half step down to F. Regards
@xGshikamaru
@xGshikamaru 9 лет назад
I would love to see this question answered as well, coincidentally the dead spot is on the 15th fret here as well. Maybe because of the neck joint, maybe because it has a floating bridge and the springs play some nasty game with that frequency, I don't know...

There is another way to make wood move permanently and that is boiling it in linseed oil before applying pressure and clamping. A friend of mine who worked on fine English shotguns, did it all the time to bend a gun stock so it would "fit" the shooter correctly. Having boiling vats of linseed oil around the workshop is a bit of an extreme sport though, and I wouldn't actually recommend it to anyone....

All the youtube videos I've watched on this topic have the exact same twist where the side with the high e string is back compared to the low e side. I hear it over and over in the comment section. My guitar has this problem. Im assuming that it is the uneven tension from the different gauge strings. The low e side has more tension than high e side. I think the trust rod should have compensation implimented. Perhaps route the grove at a bit of an angle along the neck so that it is a bit off center towards one side at the headstock. It doesn't need to be noticable because you could just use a slightly larger trust rod cover. Perhaps only do this as a solution to a guitar that has this probem to begin with. Just re-route the trust rod channel and shim the low e side.

I have this problem with my cheap bass guitar. The first thing I will do to repair it is get a job, so I will have money. The second thing is to buy new frets, string and sanding paper. The third thing is remove the fretboard, i think the fretboard is fine, so i will only replace the frets later. Than I will repair using the sanding paper with something, check if it's straight, than put the fretboard back. I hope it will work.

I'm pretty sure that the twist in my neck affects the action. the book says that at the 12th fret the bass E string should be at 1.50mm but mine has to be at almost 2.00mm or more to not buzz... The guitar is set up right. It has a slight bow, about .010mm-.020mm bow so there isn't any buzzing at the middle frets. its also an LTD ESP viper 200fm made in Indonesia so, it's junk. That doesn't help... :/ can you send me a good guitar so I don't have to deal with this one?? I'm a huge fan of your videos and a future frequent customer and promoter. well let me throw another wrench in the works for you. picture this an instrument 1980's or prior maple neck and fretboard which is 1 piece ( ala japanese made squiers and similar), lacquered and has yellowed with age. in this case your option of using the frets although is an interesting theory i have never seen it work ( just being honest). straightenint it wipth pressure does work but most instances goes to crap once string tension is applied ( look at me rambling on LOL). ANYway, in the case of neck and fingerboard being made in a 1 piece fasion ( no seperation between the fretboard and neck), and not wanting to refret and refinish an entire neck just so it matches there isnt a lot of options available. fact is that trying to clamp and twist the neck would be the only means in this case when it comes to 1980's and earlier guitarskeeping it as original as possible is a big deal and this is even more compounded on the lower end instruments from the same period, for example lets use a japanes made squier bass from early 80's ( 80 to 85), if one of these has a twisted neck you can level refret refinish which makes it not cost effective, you could replace the neck but this is not cost effective nor worth it for a bass that varies in price used from 350 (and in some cases and locations) up in the 500 to 1000 mark. which leaves the only option as clamp heat steam method. i do agree on one thing though if you are goign to do the clamp heat method leave out the steam it is not going to help because all it will do is add moisture into the wood and go bback to the way it was or be far worse.one method i have tried and seen work is to set and clamp the neck down with a slight twist in the opposite direction then use a household clothes iron on low heat to slowly warm the neck via the fretwire ( rest iron on a rag over hte fretwire).you have to constantly monitor it but i have seen and had it work but only in rare cases. so with all of that said in the case of fretboard and neck made in one piece and laquered showing its natural aging what are your thoughts on fixing a twisted neck

Hi, I know this is an old video, but I really need some help, if anyone can answer me I'll be really grateful I have a really cheap strat copy (before saying "oh, it's because it's a cheapo", I can't even buy a Squier Bullet, it's really expensive here in Brazil, the minimum wage goes around $910, and a Squier Bullet goes for $1.200, I'm not kidding), the original neck got twisted really badly, so I changed the neck on it, a cheapo neck as well, from an old Austin strat copy, the thing is, as far as I can see, the neck is straight but none of the strings can tune, if I hold an E major chord and tune the guitar to that chord, as soon as I go for a G major the guitar is out of tune the nut is a little bit off the fretboard, it's almost imperceptible, I can't even fit a needle on it, so my question is is the nut creating all of the problem or there's really something hugely messed up with my guitar? I'm sorry if I was rude in any way at some point, i'm still working out my English, sorry, but if you could help me please, it's my only guitar and I really can't afford much, just really cheap strat copies...thank you

Hello Igor, my first question has to be: Is the fret spacing the same on the new neck and the old neck?
@IgorBlackEyes
@IgorBlackEyes 7 лет назад
Yes, i'm afraid that the neck is a bit closer to the bridge, I don't have proper luthier tools, but I can see that in the old neck, the 21st fret was right above a screw on the guitar's scratch plate, and on this new neck, is a few centimeters away from this screw, going to the bridge direction, so, I think the neck must be off, so, do you think it might be the problem? and how can I drill the neck in the right angle, cause now it isn't, the thing is, I have basic tools, some screwdrivers and stuff, but I have no clamps and so, what tools do you think I can use to "replace" a clamp, so I could set the neck angle, and that huge rule to set the length properly? thank you so much for your reply
@timcc001
@timcc001 7 лет назад
OK, so your new neck has what is called a longer "scale length" and will not play in tune unless the bridge is moved back to the proper position. This would create a couple of problems. I will assume that your strings feed into the bridge from the back of the guitar. These holes would all be in the wrong location. Second, because you would have to move the bridge back, any existing holes would be exposed. My suggestion is for you to purchase a neck with the proper scale length. You can calculate the scale length of your original neck (if you have it) by measuring from the fretboard side of the nut to the center of the 12th fret, then multiplying this number by two. The neck should also be the same width and be a tight fit in the pocket. Don't hesitate to ask more questions, I am happy to help you with this.
@IgorBlackEyes
@IgorBlackEyes 7 лет назад
Tim C Hi, thank you so much for your help, so, the Austin neck was indeed a bit longer than the original neck, so, inspired by Clapton, I ended up buying a used guitar, same model and brand as mine, I used the neck on this "new" guitar, the neck pickup, which sounded a bit different (in a good way) and some plastic parts, so I didn't need to move the bridge cause the neck was a perfect fit, I just needed to shim it a little bit and now the guitar plays great, thank you so much for helping me out with this

Why don't you show how to fix a twisted neck? I mean... taking off the fret board, showing how to plane/sand the neck, remove the twist. This approach is not shown anywhere on RU-vid (only the heat method with electric irons) Then replace the fretboard etc. For a company who makes guitars this should be easy enough. I suspect there are many people like myself who have a couple of older guitars (with twisted necks) and are looking for a practical demonstration of this type of work, shown in detail. Just a thought, enjoy your videos.

Y'might consider a second-best option: get a cheapie neck from Guitar Fetish for about $65.00. I hear they're not particularly good, but even a magabucks Warmoth neck might well need a complete level/crown/dress ends/polish. ...I've encountered a couple of surprisingly good guitars in that price range, including the last Vox-style "teardrop" that Robert Olsen had, that I paid a whopping hundred bucks for. The cheapie Artec pickups sound great! So, ya never know. It's always a crap-shoot, and I always love keeping one eye out for cheap guitars that are actually rather good. It's fun. Y'know.
