I work in fitness and the "no days off/ stick with the grind/ no pain no gain," mentality plagues that as well. Rest and recovery is the necessary counterpoint to work, be it physical or mental, for all creatures.

THANK YOU FOR STATING that we need to train the high drive/working dogs how to settle and that we don't "need" a unbreakable crate. I went into owning a Malinois with the presumption that I would need one of these expensive crates... I've taught him the off switch and it's been a blessing.

Best video I have seen so far on Malinois. So tired of seeing the.portrayed as monsters that only an "Alpha " trainer can handle, by locking the dog up most of the time , keeping it away from humans and often dogs, and shocking it repeatedly. I am old, and severely disabled. Now to be fair my Malinois is only 7 months , but she could certainly overpower me if she wished. She doesnt. She has trained herself to run to!e before a Falkland try to brace me.. Barring that she has a weird manoeuvre that scares me , but she seems to know what she is doing. She runs in front, breaking most of the impact from the fallout squeezes out from under me at the last second. Then she helps me up. I can only assume she has decided the best way to protect me is to keep me from getting hurt. If I can handle her without beating, a shock collar or prison cell crate ( our crate doesnt even have a door attached, she has the run of the house) I have to wonder why these so called alphas can not. But then they don't have a clue what a real alpha is. I have had dogs all my life. She is different. So intelligent. But also loyal and loving. She works for me because she wants to, not because she is afraid of me.

Your view is SO important to be spread! Dominance based training will never make the dog trust you fully, and they so much deserve being loved and respected as your your dogs are. Thank you!❤

Working military and law enforcement dogs, yes I helicoptered several times. Now I work my Maligator off leash 95 percent of the time. It's about the partnership and it is so much more rewarding. Better results also. Thanks for the podcast, it brought up a lot. 🤠

I would love for you guys to do a podcast session on the best ways for "a daily life" for your dogs and best practices. I've just gotten my first working dog and I'm so used to the daily life of couch potatoes! He loves being near me and rests alot, but also goes full speed! I want to make sure I'm helping him relax but not making him fully reliant on me being there 24/7. He has always been a tad anxious but he's very trusting of me and not much else.

In medicine residency people still believe you should live at the hospital and work 120+ hours a week. When I say zombies don’t assimilate what they are trying to learn, people say I’m lazy. Yes absolutely, rest and having fun is essential for when you’re trying to learn/improve, mentally or physically.

Thanks so much for this! I've been wondering myself too, why these dogs which have such amazing drive for their reinforcers are so often the ones being harshly corrected. People need to learn to unlock the power of those reinforcers, and they'll realize the use of aversives is not needed

It is good to hear a dog owner speak out against the excessive use of crates. Instinctively, even though I have never owned a dog before, keeping an animal locked in a crate for an excessive length of time seems wrong.

Hey Matt, thank you so much for all the information you share on your channel and all other platforms! I have a dog that really lacks confidence and I really want to help him build that, could you make a video with some tips about this issue? He is not reactive at all, he's very sociable with other dogs, but he's scared of people and avoids everyone except for me. Thank you again!

Sometimes I have walked my dog in the evening after work and he still will not settle down, he does like a shopping spree of counter surfing, or other destructive behavior. I will tell him to go in his crate and he will lay down and settle, but I don't leave him in there. It's a plain wire cage crate. At night and all day I am at work, he has run of the house and yard. He prefers to sleep all day and wait for me to come home. He only misbehaves when I am home.

@m.z.593 Год назад
I don't know your situation and I don't even know if it's a problem for you but an interesting thing is that not every way of walking is the same and some can amp a dog up actually. If you feel this is your problem check out Sarah stremmings (cog dog podcast) decompression walk. It's basically a low stimulation sniff and stroll which helps dogs relax while other higher stimulation more controlled walk can frustrate them and amp them up. I was just thinking because you were talking about cointer surfing and that is something they can do to enrich themselves kinda.

Do you discipline your dog if it does something bad? If so how do you discipline?
@woahcrispy
@woahcrispy Год назад
not harshly , dogs are allowed to make mistakes, a lot of mistakes people make it putting them in a kennel for punishment , even tho a kennel is supposed to be a happy place, but obviously you should let the dog know that it’s not good what they did, a simple “no” could do that, depending on the dog.
