The thing about podcasts is the ones that are wildly successful feature people who already have a following elsewhere allowing them to interview similarly popular people. Rookie creators should not be fooled into think simply starting a podcast will result in similar success.
Any success in podcasting nowadays can only be had if enough people know who you are. The market is oversaturated and people like familiarity. Nobody cares about conversations between nobodies.
People nowdays are lonely and listening to a podcast between 2 people or a group of friends makes us feel part of the conversation that is happening. Also not everyone want to watch TikTok nonstop. I put my headphones on the bus and sit on the front seat and watch the drive to work and home giving my eyes some rest from the phone screen. Also while coding or browsing, it can get boring so it's rarely a movie playing in the background and mostly music or podcast. Also we love podcast for the same reason people used to love radio / talkshows
No. People have just grown up. Teens that used to waste their time on RU-vid watching meaningless are now young adults. They understand the value of education, which podcasts provide
@@boss-iy9bd I don’t think the majority of podcasts educational ones being consumed by connoisseurs of intelligent conversation. Lots of them are crass joking around while high about Bigfoot or theory crafting about intellectual properties.
I absolutely love long form podcasts, As generally speaking, The creators can really do the subject matter justice, and also demonstrate their own ability and knowledge in the subject matter, Or not as the case may be. I also subscribe to many podcasts on Google podcasts, and often listen to them in bed when I can't sleep. Topics such as biology, philosophy, cosmology, physics are all covered by some really amazing creators. Long live the podcast!
@@hasanalharaz7454 Sean Carroll's mindscape is probably my favorite, If you have a taste for slightly more scientifically orientated subjects. He has a broad range of guests, but he is a very smart guy and always asks great questions even in areas outside of his expertise. I also enjoy "philosophy in our time." Some of the guests are really wacky, but some of them are genuinely brilliant and thought provoking. These are normally done in panels of three or more guests in the form of a debate. Lex Fridman Also has a lot of interesting guests and he does very deep dives. My only caveat with him is that I question his authenticity. My latest discovery is a channel on youtube simply called Shaun, But be aware his politics are very left leaning, which works for me but I realize may not be everyone's cup of tea. The reason I like him is he applies strong intellectual rigor in all of his breakdowns, and really challenges a lot of very popular beliefs. I have a lot more but these are probably my favorites at the moment.
I would say the wave may be getting calmer but content creators and people being propped up in the machine will always be there!!! The machine chooses those who are put in the spotlight!! That’s why this podcasting era may never truly die!!
RU-vid's algorithm relies on the "recommendation media" algorithm in which the platform generally will only recommend similar content to that which you've already seen so if you havn't watched a podcast on youtube before the algorithm should not suddenly start placing them on your home screen.
What I love about a saturated market is that newer, smaller players are challenged to find creative ways to stand out. The result is innovation which is always exciting. My favorite comedy podcast is shot on green screen, heavy on visuals and sfx and is edited in segments by a team of editors: The Random Order Show
I blame Joe Rogan for this!! He was the one that really blew it up and really set it off for everyone else!! And ever since he got that Spotify deal, it was open season for everyone else!! And once again, great video brother!!
I really believe that all types of content will soon live within the same amount of popularity and viewer spread around them, since every single type of content fits for the kind of public it seeks I get to see more and more people trying and staying with the things they like. Tv is great production value at scheduled neverending entertainment, shorts just as its name says is shorts for something quick like clips or snipets of information and laughs, longform videos and streaming being an internet experience of their own and audio books and podcasts will stay in the relatively same place, the one good thing about podcasting (that I would have liked to seementioned here) is that it has served to many as a replacement for social interaction since it can be a group of gamers talking about life, a duo of psychologists teaching something and even just one person narrating an event or responding questions. Even in mexico, the president of the country gives speeches almost every morning as a routine to keep in contact with all matters, that is transmitted live by news reporters, those transmissions are also youtube live streams that will stay as a video, the audio of the speech gets turned into a spotify podcast, and most usually when anyone needs some information or citation they will turn into shorts and clips either for memes or for important information. Its a cycle not of content but a way of communicating
Great Video, at 8:00 there is no way that 30% of podcast listeners make an average of $250,000 a year. 26% of US people listen to podcasts every week. Only 1.5% of US people make over $250000 a year.
The problem with the average RU-vid podcast is that for every hour of talk, there's only 10 minutes worth of meaningful content, usually just showing a bunch of people and microphones, mostly talking about themselves or their sponsors. I'd rather listen to well narrated mini documentaries, like what 'Logically Answered' puts out.
Pretty much. The other minutes consist of them making you feel good and motivated but in reality its not really useful. Soon as you turn it off it goes away lmao
Podcasts have been around since before RU-vid existed. Originally it was a thing in iTunes that automatically downloaded new tracks to your iPod that you could listen to offline. Google actually has their own separate Podcast app and website.
I been doing longform podcast style shows since 2019, and they will always be around, because people 1) love lives with interaction and 2) they just start to enjoy you personally
I love the new perspectives you give on fields I don't know. Great channel, thanks Hari & crew. (Btw, it's great seeing your confidence and production grow over the years, but please don't sell your soul like many do. It's not about the views, it's about staying true) 👍
Podcasts are just internet radio, like you said most people listen to podcasts while doing something else which is exactly how people listens to radio and radio it's still around, why would internet radio disappear? And keep in mind that what limited the amount of shows in old radio was that not anybody could transmit, but that's not a problem here.
Yes. I love Lex's podcasts, but there's a natural limit to the number of hours in a day. His conversations are not on a level where I can just binge watch 3 or 4 of them and still retain much of what's been said.
@@vsvishal8853he's an anti intellectual, pretend smart type, maybe appealing for slow people but anyone that actually intelligent finds it extremely cringy. But that just my perspective 😎
I believe that with podcasts, you are more likely to retain your audience, as they get to know all the intricacies of your life. I would leverage this audience to benefit my other endeavors. For instance, comedians who have podcasts tend to thrive because they establish a strong connection with their audience, increasing the likelihood of them attending their shows.
Man there’s a podcast for everything these days!! Covering every topic!! Every life event and everyday things that are normal and don’t need to be on a podcast!! Too much!!

I think the effect of platform saturation on future growth of a particular podcast , will also come down to the nature of the podcast itself. What I mean is - if a podcast is focusing more on certain subjects/disciplines/concepts/etc (instead of interviews with actual people), and if the subjects covered have a very broad scope that is constantly evolving (e.g. physics, astronomy, computers, AI, futurism, etc), then there will probably be room for growth for quite a long while.
There are way too many podcasts and due to their length they are unsustainable. The top will stay on top and the rest will eat each other up. I think we are at the peak now. Everyone's favourite person has a podcast now and they have surprisingly low numbers
I tried podcasts to deafen the sound of existential dread but I've since switched to audio books because of the perceived smartness associated with it. The downside is audio books are boring as hell. You'd think Audible would present good titles, maybe tailor it to you like Spotify, but no. I've only found a handful of really good titles. One criticism of your latest video: I see that you get praise for the new editing, and yes it looks cool and slick but maybe not animate everything, it can be stressful and doesn't necessarily add anything. Keep the humor though because "on & on & on" was kinda funny seeing it written out like that, and in the previous video you had some "sample text" showing, not sure it that was intentional but I laughed a little. The humor also proves you're not AI content...for now. Excellent video as always!
Have I seen that your editing skills have improved? Hadn’t noticed Podcasts were popular even being a veteran in a new channel. Keep up the good work! The logical answer is that indeed your editing has improved! Keep up the good work, and you’ll get to a million subs in no time! 😊
Over saturation has been the downfall of podcasts lately. There are too many podcasts about any given topic and too many episodes within each about it. A good chunk of them contribute nothing substantial to the topic but you can’t know in a few minutes you have to listen to most of the podcast. When you do that 3-4 times you’ve wasted several hours. And then every podcast is putting out an episode a day. This works for some but for a lot of interview/debate one this runs the creative well dry very quickly. I’ve been listening to them consistently for years until lately. So many are feeling very shallow.
Intellectual people are now talking in terms of podcasts. Its easy for introverts. Can be listened alongside doing other work. Dont need much data consumption. I'm happy of being a dedicated podcast listener since 2015. Have several platforms from where I listen but never felt its time to move on from podcasts altogether. The categories I get in podcasts, I am yet to see in videos. I have stopped watching movies and shows and given my time to audiobooks and Ebooks and podcasts.
I like the Casual Criminalist. I'm not sure if he counts, bc I listen to him on youtube. I didn't like the spotify version, because unfortunately it automatically adds ads.
The way "podcast" commentary channels deal with our shrinking attention spans is to literally just play Subway Surfers or Minecraft Parkour in the background. They always feel so low in effort. PNGtubers are a little better, as the video is actually related to the topic. The redeeming feature of PNGtubers is to put stock footage, images, and videos in the background. It's better, though, to just not have a video at all. If video is required to keep a viewer's attention, they can just watch TikTok instead. Best of all are the channels that use only stock footage and images and edit just quickly enough to keep our attention. (Oh and don't forget the captions. We don't all live in a soundproof house 😅)
Low effort to create a podcast, well that is a understatement, there is a lot going on when creating a podcast is not like you sitdown and improvised everything. Sure the editing requires basic skills but it still requires a lot of work behind the scenes
Relatively low compared to an equivalent fully produced video, but as someone who’s typically spends hours per episode just doing the initial cleanup of his own audio, it’s definitely not light work.
For me, I think NN between length of time is best. In other words, I can’t stand the short form content but I also don’t necessarily want a two hour podcast. One problem with podcasts is, because they tend to be really long, there are just not enough hours in a day to subscribe to more than say three or four podcasts at any given time. I would say I like the length to be no more than an hour, and if the subject requires more than an hour, then maybe divide it into a couple parts instead of trying to cram it all into one episode.
Podcasts are slow burns, though. Sometimes you don't find a podcast until years later. That's why youtube is so brill. You can just search for podcast name, guest. You also touch on something important. Sometimes a person is interviewed multiple times. When you are downloading on an app, you can't tell which one you are listening to. Here, you can just read the comments and pretty much tell. Even the date is more clear. On the app, you have to search for the podcast title (have to get it exactly right, btw.) Then subscribe, then search back and back and back through the catalog. Sometimes only part of the catalog is listed (WTF - looking at you). Sometimes the host interviews the same guest multiple times or shrinks it to compile it with other best of clips. Whereas on youtube it is straightforward. I don't use RU-vid because i like to pause and come back in between tasks. I watch a wide range of youtube. Sometime I have time for visual, other times I do not. And sadly, youtube doesn't make it easy to pick up on part watched vids weeks later, where podcast apps allow for that. Also, I do save part watched to a separate playlist. But it's just not as convenient.
only podcast I listen to is Darknet Diaries and I'm still playing catch up at chapter 65, it's one of the best things to hear if you are into IT security, plus the host have amazing story telling skill kodus to Jack
9 months later...ur predictions are correct. Podcasting is oversaturated. Podcasters have branched out into becoming multi media companies. It's not sustainable to just have a podcast where u only talk. There also is a tendency to stir up drama for views. So potential guests have become leery of podcasts.
i agree with everything you said in the video, specifically that part about how podcasting has hit its peak. about a mouth ago i spent about a mouth listening to Marc Maron’s podcast back catalogue and i must say i enjoyed it very much but i don’t find the need to keep listening to him unless it’s a guest i’m interested in. not only that i find Rogan to be repetitive with guest being mostly non credible. i get tired of Bill Burr and Tom Sugura. i still love their stand up but listening to their podcast every few days to be too much. so yea i totally agree with you that podcast has peaked
Podcasts have taken the place that talk radio had in yesteryear. The difference is that the interviews are of higher quality and you can choose what to listen to.
All forms of content follow boom-bust cycles before eventually stabilizing. This will be no different. I predict that the content mill podcasts that people only listen to in order to kill time will die off, but the podcasts where actual interesting discussion happens will stay popular.
Podcasts are definitely a part of my routine especially when I go for a walk. Sometimes it feels like you are a fly on the wall gaining access to information from the world’s most accomplished people.
In old times, radio would be playing in the background while people work on something. Podcast is just that for modern days. Please don’t tell me that podcasts help you learn anything and retain it to be fruitful in real life. It’s just white noise for 90% of the listeners. Just read a book. I’m not an old man. Just 23.
I am a 36 year old educator and learn lots of new things on an ongoing basis listening to a variety of podcasts. I enjoy podcasts because of the variety.. Old school talk radio is dominated by politics.
@@lilmoo7682 True old school is full of politics but new ones are even worse as they are just mostly opinions of individuals presented as facts. Must research the truth for ourselves.
I know for me, RU-vid completely replaces both cable TV and radio and the majority of that time for me is spent watching podcasts, albeit with them playing in the background similar to radio.
I find 5-10 minutes works best for me, long pod casts are boring after a while, shorts are too short and irritating after a while. Good content, that is straight to the point, only says what needs to be said is what I think we need. Long intros and bad adverts ruin your channel. This video for example was way too drawn out, I just stated skipping through it.
Great video on great topic that not many people talk about as always. I remember I first started watching your video about a year or year a half ago, you only had around 50k or less subs if I remember correctly, now look at you. I would definitely watch your pod cast if you ever decide to start one.
There is still a lot of room for higher quality podcasts. I know it goes against your first point, but the next wave of upcoming podcasts will have to differentiate themselves on quality to overcome incumbent advantages.
I'm happy to see more people checking out podcasts instead of quick dopamine videos to improve themselves. I've been publishing my podcast episodes since 2020 and I agree it's like catching a weekly series :)
It's basically reading a book, but I can be driving. It's the best way to get current info from someone. A book takes over a year to get into your hands usually.
I like podcasts, but fall in and out with them. I avoid unilateral podcast themes where the fear mongering or use of clickbait themes overwhelm the reason for listening. Also I feel some people drag out topics to make them 1 hour. I like blended approach of GMM and podcasting
I do not listen much to talkshow style podcasts with interviews 🤔 I like to listen more to essay style, educational or investigative podcasts. Mostly history, paleontology, true crime, corporate scandal, science, space, fashion, pop culture or art essays/analysis 🤗 And yes, I do mostly listen to them on my commute, doing dishes or folding laundry 😂
@LogicallyAnswered Podcasts are rapidly evolving from what they used to be. The future of podcasts is no longer limited to listening to celebrities sharing their business achievements or lifestyle. Instead, podcasts are increasingly becoming more niche-specific, such as the Waveform podcast by MKBHD, which delves into ongoing tech news and updates, providing valuable insights to the audience. RU-vidrs are recognizing this evolving trend, and will adapt and continue enhancing their content to meet the changing preferences of listeners.
The last podcast I followed every episode of was The Art of LiveOps but it ended in 2022. They had absolutely fantastic guests on, extremely-driven and full of battle-hardened experience and wisdom that can't be found online on how to build a community and manage it. I don't listen to podcasts much anymore though. Peace and quiet is much more enjoyable. I'm more interested in creating my vision of the future and thinking about it while I do stuff.
Podcasts in my opinion are having their golden age now, but will be "less popular" as the industry becomes more saturated, However if the trends of platforms ditching short form content and life becoming more rushed then i think Podcasts will have a probably permanent place in social media. In short: my opinion on this is that while Podcasts are/will have a golden age and an eventual slight decline, they will still hold a permanent place as a very popular outlet of content on social media.
Podcasts might seem low effort and minimal cost, but the host must be incredibly knowledgeable to ask the most intriguing questions about an immense range of topics. I think Joe Rogan stands out because he seems to know so much about everything such that his podcasts focus on a new topic rather than simply focusing on a guest. He can interview the same guest multiple times and bring out new ideas each time.
Talk shows, interviews, all parts of entertainment since mass media was a thing, this is an evolution of it, and it’ll come out in a different form based on how content consumed in the future.
considering podcast that talk on one topic or multiple such as true crime podcasts, and engineering podcast, i.e. "Well There's Your Problem," that don't interview but bring guests to talk about certain subjects, or the hosts themselves bring a topic they've done some research in. its more likely folks will find podcasts that also fit their intreset and those types of podcasts are more likely to stick around long term
Podcasting are not only about interviewing guests. There are many podcasts that discuss about news within specific topics like Tech, sports, movies, etc....
That’s why dating podcast does so well because the void dating has grown now more the ever and as people fail to match make in their own lives the podcast will fill the void they are unable to fill themselves. Kinda sad but kinda true.
It's appearing that the issue wasn't shrinking attention spans so much as a constant need for stimulation. Those "mundane" tasks like walking and cooking used to be mental down time that was actually restorative and introspective. Now that void gets filled with two hours of podcast that someone might do well to remember ten minutes of it.
You make me laugh with your hour by hour (sometimes minute by minute) contradictions in your views 😂. One of the reasons I still watch your your channel, for the laughs. I mean Bro u literally ping-ponged your stance (from yea to neh) THREE different times in THIS video alone. 😅🤙🏼
One of the reasons I pay YT Premium is to hear videos like yours as podcasts... :/ I don't need to watch your videos, I can listen to them while I drive, or while I'm doing the house chores... My question is... do you have a podcast already? and if not... why not?
We call it "Talk Show" on linear television, or "Podcast" if streamed or downloaded. I recall it in 2006, the download was the norm when people still called it "iPod Broadcast" = "Podcast". I'm old - still used a radio to listen to a talkshow on things I like, like astronomy, science, and history. Now such shows have been ported to the digital platforms; they are still an audio affair even if they include the video of the people talking. Nothing new under the Sun!
We've been seeing that for years already and it doesn't change anything. People don't know how to debate or have a respectful discourse. It's also been proven that people gravitate towards podcasts with people who share the same views and ideals. There's not enough crossover or desire to entertain a different perspective.
I only catch up with short clips from Waveform, Lew Later, JRE, MacG and mostly on certain topics and certain people's views. I cannot imagine having the time to spend on a full podcast, If I'm doing anything I prefer listening to music. Even with radio, I could never just listen to people speak, I believe in content that takes hours and thought to create and speaking is just experiences and opinions if there's no segue to any important information or huge current news.
For me normal videos are like podcasts, for example You are my podcast. I don't need video form when I can listen to everything that You provide. I'm sure that Your video is ultra high quality and editors are amazing but I just need audio for majority of content
I mostly prefer the podcast form on RU-vid so I can still do stuff and still hear it. The best time is 50min-1h. The podcasts I hear are usualy just radio programs transmited on RU-vid.
Podcast are really just replacements for late night Tv and radio shows. Some form of it will always exist. Now some podcasters are just ‘sit down and give my opinion’ podcasters as opposed to interviewers and I have less confidence in those and also that just seems like standard youtube without the interviews. I disagree on the work, it’s different but still requires better end production to capitalize on. People with good studio setupsand better quality mics tend to do better then those without them. Networking outside of the podcast is also critical if you want guest. A lot of the most popular podcast have guest you have to know who to reach out to in order to get people to sit down for them.
it will become oversaturated just like everything else nowadays. on a side note: its funny how almost all my hobbies and interests started out being totally underground and pretty much all of it has gone so overly mainstream you almost feel left out even though u were "there first" LOL.
I've been working from home ever since the pandemic and that's when I got introduced to podcasts, and everyday I find something to watch while I work Favorite podcast is "Podcast and Chill with Mac G"
I think you raise some good points but overall stick a bit to much to the assumption that all podcasts follow an interview format. Over saturation is of course still going to be a concern but podcasts don’t need to be hard coded with interviews and can be about the hosts or relevant topics similar to a radio show
