IU said love for her is hoping for or letting the other person have a good sleep. She has insomnia, which means the people she wants to talk with at night have gone to sleep while she's left awake. She could be disturbing them or not let them sleep because she's bored, but letting them sleep and even wishing for them to have a sweet dream is an act of unselfishness and unconditional love. I think she's the sweetest.

Ah finally! Been waiting for this one for a while, I love this song so much! IU said that she wrote "Through the Night" at night when she had trouble sleeping. She thought about what she would want to tell someone whom she loves dearly, and said that as someone who often suffers from insomnia, telling that person "good night" or "sweet dreams" (basically the last line of the song) would be the most sincere confession of love. The title of this song in Korean is actually "Night Letter" (밤편지), which I think really encapsulates the feel of this song, particularly once you know the sort of background behind it. :) Another IU song that I would recommend checking out is "Ending Scene," aka the most beautiful breakup song in existence hehe, it's also from the same album as TTN. Also if you watch kdramas Kim Soo-hyun, who is good friends with IU, appears in the music video!

This is because she had experience insomia so thats why she wish that people can sleep well. Some of her songs has reflect this meaning as well. As someone that love to understand the lyrics of any songs. IU's way of telling a story in her songs really capture my heart. IU has such an amazing voice and she has such a top notch talent in relaying her emotions in her songs to the audience.

This song is one of her most popular songs, although I will admit that I am confused by the story line. A commenter below provided info. I had not heard before and sounds very much like something IU would say about one of her songs. But I also know that IU rarely reveals everything about her songs, letting her fans personalize the meaning to their lives. Then there is this little piece of information, where she has said that the song With A Determined Heart to Forget You, was connected to Through the Night. Although she didn't write that song, it was written and performed by a famous Korean folk singer, I have read that she said that Through the Night was the start of a relation and With A Determined Heart was the ending of that relationship. The MV of Determined Heart includes the hair pin that IU puts on in Through the Night, a common device that IU uses to connect songs into a single story. Determined Heart is a beautiful song. There is 1 MV of it available on RU-vid and also a concert clip released by her channel which is absolutely stunning both vocally and visually. IU didn't start writing most of her own songs until around 2014, an exception is the song Hold My Hand that she wrote and performed for the drama The Greatest Love and is the 1st song where she received sole writing credit. So analyzing much of her earliest songs lyrics would not give you much insight into her. Good Day was written by Kim Eana a well known song writer. IU and Kim Eana worked together on lyrics for many of her songs post 2011. Her Chat-shire album was her 1st where she wrote all the songs, composed them and produced the album. Chat-shire meet with some unfounded and ignorant controversy because of the song ZeZe. A song taken from a famous children's book about a young boy who is neglected by his family and finds solace in a small orange tree in their backyard. In the boys imagination the tree talks to him and he finds comfort talking to the tree and climbing up into it. Some people claimed that IU was sexualizing the young boy. In the song the singer (IU) is singing from the prespective of the Orange Tree. One line that became an issue is where the tree tells the boy to climb up it. Now for the life of me anyone who can draw a sexual reference out of that line, well it says more about where that persons mind is than it does the song writer. There are some other lines as well that people had issue with, but for anyone who truly knew the actual story, which was never accused of being sexual in anyway, these claims are ridiculous and like I said before says more about the people making the criticism. IU apologized and stated that was not the her purpose. IU is well read and has used the imagery and story line from various books and movies in her songs. Her song 23, the MV uses Alice in Wonderland imagery to help tell the story of how confusing a time it can be for a 23 year old in that place between childhood and adulthood. No one suggested she was pushing drug use, maybe none of the kpop crowd knew what Alice was really about. Or her song Leon which she wrote for the Infinity Challenge in 2014 based on the movie The Professional. Or her song Coin which was inspired by a movie where gambling was the primary backdrop. But she was not pushing Casino gambling in that song or MV but rather the chances she has taken in her career.

In '8' and in this video IU plays two roles. First herself, then the other party - the object of her affection. In the country house memories of '8' IU dressed distinctly like her lost friend Sulli. In this MV she's corresponding with the lady in red. Perhaps its coincidental that IU's song 'Red Queen' had been inspired by her friend Sulli. Sulli was still living at the time. Its somewhat prescient that IU would write 'I fear you'll go to a far off place'. The literal translation of the Korean title is 'Night Letter' and the song has the feeling of someone unable to sleep in the wee hours wistfully jotting down a note to an absent loved one.

I know what she said about this song, and I appreciate it as a sweet love song, but I can't avoid to feel a bit of sadness about it... Maybe it's because of the English translation (not my mother language), or because she related this song to her remake song "With a Determined Heart to Forget You"... Anyway... perhaps it's only because "Ending Scene" is in the same album...😅
