When we no longer shudder at the ecological warning calls of science, the only voice left that can awaken us belongs to the poets. To hear that voice is to hear the language of the soul.
Author and activist, Ian McCullum shares how we are impacting our environment and what we need to do as a human race to reverse the negative effects of over-population
and our lack of care towards the planet.
Ian McCallum is a psychiatrist, analytical psychologist and a specialist wilderness guide. A former rugby Springbok, he is a director of the Wilderness Foundation, a trustee of the Cape Leopard Trust and the author of multiple publications including two anthologies of wilderness poems: Wild Gifts(1999) and Untamed (2012). His book: Ecological Intelligence - Rediscovering Ourselves in Nature - won the Wild Literary Award at the World Wilderness Congress in 2009. An adjunct professor at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, his academic interests focus on evolutionary biology, conservation psychology and environmental ethics. In 2012, together with friend and journalist, Ian Michler, he completed a five-month, 5000 km journey through six southern African countries, walking, cycling and kayaking to highlight the importance of trans-frontier/corridor conservation.

Ian. thank you for sharing with us your soul, your life and your wisdom. There is so much to do and so little time, to turn the tide of human destruction. And with people like you, it's possible.

Just listened again - and for the umpteenth time - to this extraordinarily beautiful presentation. "Have we forgotten that wilderness is not a place - but a pattern of soul? .. - but a season and we are in its final hour?" A Keystone individual

Thank you Ian for this touching presentation. We met you and Ian Michler by a so called coincidence on your expedition tour "In the Tracks of Giants" in Namibia. I never forget my moments of joy, being able to spend some time with such inspiring souls like both of you are. If only everyone could listen to "Poetry and Nature: Voice For The Voiceless" at least once ... I am sure this would make such a big difference. "Keystone individuals who know that we co-exist in a fragile web of life. Who know that behind their tumbs is all the known life in the known universe. Who know that our tiny blue oasis, in a tiny corner of our Milky Way Galaxy is a miracle. Is a gift. Is a garden." Thank YOU!

Great presentation on many levels ,, reflective storytelling same subject , take a look at the dialog shared on the keystone species topic in the experience presentation of Avatar "flight of passage" looking at things through another's eyes reflectively upon our own history and perceptions of the natural world .. touching upon things from both ones own inner artistic expression voice and a science perceptive, the essence voice that knows without being taught enabled

To be or not to be - that is the question. (Shakespeare) Co-existence or No existence? (Piet Hein) What a privilege! . . . . What a responsibility! (Ian McCallum) Will we awaken to the latter before it is too late? The poets have warned us!
