She said she's a writer first, and a singer second. When you consider the fact that Lana writes her own melodies as well, I think that being a writer is an umbrella term that doesn't only refer to her lyricism, but also refers to her writing as a musician. I think she wanted to acknowledge the fact that she's a singer second since society can be hypercritical when a female singer isn't vocally on Mariah Carey's level, with the belts, riffs and high pitched notes. Lana isn't in the music industry to show off with vocal acrobatics, I think she just wants to give us beautiful, layered music that means something to her. Personally, I think that's really inspirational; you don't necessarily have to have the "perfect voice" by society's standards in order to make amazing music that suits your style.
Moreover, Lana Del Rey is not exactly a novice poet. Her influences include Plath, Whitman, Emerson, and Ginsberg. I’m almost certain she’s probably read Samuel Beckett, as well, who in my opinion is possibly one of the most profound poets who ever lived. As far as “rules of poetry” go, I think they are less important than the gut punch delivered to the audience by the words. Some of the best writers have learned to break those rules in ways which are beneficial to the poem as a whole. Not sure if anyone has listened to Joanna Newsom, but she is brilliant, and often her lyrics (which are essentially long poems sung) are simply the contents of her pockets strung together in a whimsical way. But her poems are transcending in every way. Not always meant to be picked apart and analyzed. Meant to be felt, even if they are difficult or uncomfortable to read. Lana also has a degree in philosophy, so her writing and ideas sometimes are really expansive, crossing the boarders of her own life experience or self and into the greater state of being as a human.
Wait newsom ? I’m going to check that out . I forgot about her . I gave LDR Anne Carson’s “ autobiography of red “ but man, Becket is pushing it I think and that’s not a dis . As I love this . Thanks for your informed view . A philosophy degree ? Wot? Ok. X
I just discovered this collection she wrote and sent it to my best friend describing it as ginsberg meets emerson and silvia plath and then crawls into bed with whitman! So funny and cool you knew that they were her inspiration! Shits golden.
That's so awesome you majored in poetry! I am an occasional songwriter myself, so I'm glad you made the distinction between songwriting v poetry writing; although they can intersect in some ways, they can also diverge even moreso in regards to rhythm, structure, style, etc. I'm admittedly not an expert at poetry, but it's something I should learn more - the best songwriters probably know how to do both well, such as Lana, one of the most talented songwriters in music today.
I would love if you analyzed Lou Reeds poetry/ lyrics. He actually has a book of poems and stories out called “Do Angels Need Haircuts?” and I’ve always thought of him as a poet first and a musician second.
This helped me with being a better writer and editing my poems. Poetry is skill one in which I think a lot of instapoets forget. It’s not just emotional rhyming and lyricism. Or cliche motivational quotes. That’s why I think it’s important to know the grammatical background of poetry and study it and learn that skill with meter, and all of that while you continue to grow as a writer! Appreciated your eloquent and thorough review of lanas audiobook! It’s one of my favorites!
Roma Ryan is my favorite poet (she is the lyricist for the Irish singer Enya). She hasn’t released a ton of her poetry, just two or three books that are hard to find, but they’re beautiful. Nothing at all like the beautiful rhythmic rhyming words she writes for Enya to sing.
Such a beautiful, interesting and comprehensive review. I personally love this collection, but I am not expert in this field, that's why I am very glad to have listened to your analysis. Thank you.
I studied English Literature and specialised in poetry too and I have to say it’s so so nice to see someone do an in-depth analysis of poetry on RU-vid!!! You clearly know your stuff haha great video :) (also some of my personal favorites: Wallace Stevens, Basil Bunting, W. S. Graham, Ron Silliman, and Lorine Niedecker)
I’m sure that gorgeous face of yours has probably inspired someone’s poetry. Okay, moving past the cheese, Plath, Dickinson and EE Cummings are probably my favorite poets.
Thank for the analysis, as a native spanish speaker it's difficult to understand everything she said without the printed version, but I sure loved and appreciated this collection! Congrats on your knowledge and work on poetry, I studied literature too but I focused more on latinoamerican narrative sooo I appreciate the technical notes in your video. Amazing! Keep on doing this!
This is an amazing analysis! I’m not super well versed in poetry but you really expanded on concepts and helped me understand certain critiques or tropes of the content. Thanks for the great video!!
The first one spoken word wise blew my mind. I’m very proud of her.. like she listened to Anne sexton - and as disdainful as I am of Jack antanoff ( I get they make magic together but I think she’s light years more talented than him) he really does deliver , in the first poem . Imma send this to her . Your review is great . There was a whole , grammatical bunch of words , not “split infinitive “ but tough like that ... some “morphisms” that had me piqued as a writer . She should be proud . A very powerful editor in big media told me “she’ll never pull THAT off “ and once again . She socks them in the face. I may subscribe . ! Thanks for your insight . Ready to listen to the next now . X
First video of yours I've seen. Good video. Later I may share a poem or two of one of my (disabled) friends who used to be a songwriter and has some free verse poetry he self-publishes. It's good therapy for people who have suffered terribly in their lives.
This review made me want to study poetry! Wow!!!! Thank you so much, it is so rich and structured!!! P.S. Do you think children at the foot of her bed may be her cats?
Thank you so much! They could be, or it could be about feeling maternal in another way-towards her fans, etc. But I think she’s described her cats as her children in recent interviews, so that would definitely make sense. :)
I loved your video! Thank you for making these and putting so much effort in them. Do you or somebody else have any spoken poetry (something like this one) recommendations?
Lana del Rey is my favourite poet as I am mark Jackson from Congleton Cheshire in England my shit stinks and I can not piss straight ...but her words and how she expresses them and her voice is alluring in my head 🥰🧠🥰💓💓
Wow! You really know what you are talking about. I'm more of a language major than a literature major so the closest we could get to literature is stylistics.
It's definitely going to be popular with the housewives, and the title is amazing. She is a wife herself, don't know if she's married, not a seeker, which is fine. She lives happily in the "now."
Who's YOUR favorite poet? :) Edit: Check out my review of Halsey's new poetry collection - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cCUpQjw8CcE.html
I didn't know you were a poetry editor... I write poetry and have poetry ambitions. I was inspired to write one last night: After someone of highest repute dies, They are seen in stark relief Truly apart from Our daily lives They are gods, Now they form part Of the pantheon It seems; Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is one of them, She spoke only the truth And was made out of her principles Not flesh and blood. How do I stop a hurricane An inevtiable cascade, Rushing water; It makes me want to hold on to my seat. Daniel LaPlume
I didnt know there could be a major in poetry, I think that's awsome! I write lots of poetry, maybe you can give one of my poems a quick look? I dream of publishing a poetry book someday, I'm still young but lana made me believe I can write a book!
@@ericmason6540 Thank you so much! This is a really short one, so I guess I'll leave it here... hope you can read it! My babys not by my heavenly side, I dont know where she's gone, but shes not here anymore, she isn't lost because I know where she is, but let's flip it the other way around, she knows I've gone mad but that I'm here anyhow, I'm kinda lost because I don't know where I'm standing in this point in life... I do know I wanna move because that's what i always do, like that time I left my hometown only to find it really wasn't my home even though it felt like home to me, because sometimes home isn't four walls and a roof above you, sometimes home can be the streets, the sidewalk were the youth skates and rolls a blunt every now and then to figure out an escape, sometimes home is a smile from a well known neighbor... Or that other time where I moved out of the blue because i was sick of all the professionals trying to $cam the sad out of me, and the clock managing to remind me of death and what pill to take for my mind to get back on track with my heart at the beat of a hummingbirds wing. Or that one time where I saw a mans life destroyed by a tragic event because life isn't alway that fair, and the tears that I left in that bed, from the story Id just heard his wife tell the doctors of how he was a father, husband, worker and lover... So now that my baby's gone from my not so heavenly side, you migth wonder... About me; I'm still here and will always be, because I have no place to go for now, theres so many alleys calling out for me and I've seen my life through those towns, and what it would be like to chose any of those paths, it's like if I'd lived there and know how it all ends, it's no surprise for a guy like me to make no moves when you know none of those are meant to be taken, despite the urge of moving always forward ofcourse, guess it's a matter of time for me to make a next move, but as I say, it's not about speed, it's about direction, where you're headed to... I've been stuck one too many times in the wrong place at the right time, with less than a dime or sometimes drowning in wine, but the difference relays on my baby always being by my side, because I had nothing to hide and shed be saving my life from time to time... no wonder that now, that shes far from sight, I feel like I'm lost in this point of life...
I just read your poem, and you’ve done a really good job! I totally see the Lana influence, especially with the opening line. This is more of a prose poem, which is a great format for being playful with sentence structure and a conversational tone. You use details and anecdotes well, and I get a strong sense of atmosphere from the poem. As with Lana’s poetry, I think the best moments are when you are the most specific, so generally the poem is more exciting when you’re describing city streets and hummingbirds than when you’re talking about life more vaguely. But it also works well to start with generalities and then to move into specifics deeper into the poem, so you can continue to play around with that. A detail that stood out was the use of the dollar sign in the word “scam,” which tells me that you have an interest in experimenting with how the poem appears on the page. I would encourage you to do even more of this fun and weird stuff if it appeals to you. For example, if you’re talking about money, see if you can work in numbers and other currency symbols. Again, you’ve done a really good job, and I hope you continue to experiment and practice to discover what makes you tick as a writer. :)
@@ericmason6540 Thank you so much Erick! You've encouraged me too keep up the writing and now I know where to focus more, lana does have certain influence in some my writing, its really cool you got that part, I will keep writing, and again thanks for taking the time, it's really appreciated!
Hi Eric It's been awhile brother, how are you? Here are some of my faves. Let Me Love You (Freeman), Love's Philosophy (Percy Bysshe Shelly), The Song of Love (Rainer Maria Rilke), When You Are Old (William Butler Yeats). PS. I've written two of my own both for LDR. Respects & love E! :-)
I don't get it, does she Like LA or not cause she says is the city to dream in if you consider dreams to be nightmares, but at the same time she idealises it.
Hey everyone! I have a podcast where I read poems to bring them to life 🌺 it’s called ‘ReadByLyn’ and it’s available on most platforms such as Spotify, Apple podcasts, google podcasts etc. I’d be so grateful for a listen. Hope you enjoy!
Hey ! I loved your video ! Halsey will release a poetry book in a few months and I thought you would like to have a look at it ! 👀 She's a very complete artists, she writes, produces, sings, she's an amazing performer, she paints, writes poetry... I love her so much and she's so underrated
Hi Eric, Are you a professional poetry editor? I have some poetry I’ve written but I’m not sure if I’m structuring it correctly. Would you be able to help? Thanks, Joshua.
Hi! I wouldn't call my self a professional, but I do have some experience through my university. I'd be happy to take a look at it. My email is in my profile if you'd like to send it to me. :)
Thanks for posting! If you have a minute, I uploaded a cover of Billie Eilish. As a fellow music fan, I'd love if you would take a listen. It's on my page. Hope you like it!
