I talked to Andrew Sega a few years back asking him if he ever planned to re-do PoD with newer, cleaner samples. He said he considered it and even did a bit of a clean-up for a DVD about the Modscene a while back, but never a full track worth. He feels, as it appears many here do, that Point of Departure stands on its own, a testament to the fact that newer doesn't necessarily mean better. I'm glad he didn't re-do it fully. It simply is, was, and always will be amazing.
It's one of my favorite tracks from the mod scene. I would love a proper 16bit 44khz recreation. At least Purple Motion released a CD back around 2004 and recreated some of his most popular tracks in CD quality, that's a must listen.
I'm currently working on a 'cover' of PoD, trying to recreate it one pattern at a time in a modern DAW. It doesn't have the magic of the original, but it's not awful. I'll be posting it to RU-vid when I'm done. Taking the original apart has made Mr. Sega's brilliance at the format all the more evident. He got amazing content out of so few samples!
This is my favorite mod track, I first heard it used in an Unreal Tournament map called 'Catherine's Dream'. In the sample listing it indicates it was made in ~15hrs in 1995. Good that people are keeping these things alive.
Andrew Sega aka Necros made this track and the rest of the sound track for the game In Pursuit of Greed released, in 1995, the game uses a version of the engine that Doom used. I only played the game demo and this tracker tune was the best part.
Andrew "Necros" Sega! I remember first hearing this song around 1996. A fantastic compsition with a wonderful melancholia that I can't quite put my finger on. Truly amazing.
I'm guessing a lot of people my age heard this and were inspired to move into music themselves. I've got a room full of synths and other gear and it's all down to Andrew Sega, and probably actually this track. Effortless genius. I first heard this as the intro to In Pursuit of Greed and was hooked thereafter.
I wrote a short story in college, that in the back of my mind has a lot of Necro's tunes as the soundtrack. PoD, Mech8, Ubik, Martian Lovesong. Sega literally inspired creativity inside me. I got an A :)
OMG! I've been looking for this song for YEARS! I first heard it as background music for a custom level in Unreal Tournament and have been looking for it ever since! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
I often listen to this one while I'm travelling by train, and observing landscapes through train's windows. Also, Necros was inspired with high-speed trains, and that's why he made this song. Title says its all.
The original .s3m MOD file had this comment in the header: "Point of Departure" written for the musicdisk "Progression" by Necros (FM / Legend Design / iCE) Finished in about 15 or so hours, this song came to me while watching this strange show about bullet trains, and somehow the thought of movement with- out sound inspired me to write this. (I also wanted to try to make sure I could still sequence a decent drum track :>)
This is an amazing song, I still listen to it regularly after all these years :) It'll always be one of my favourite pieces of music ever, nothing feels the same
@@belandino Yeah it is... and the song is still as good as ever. Damn, i miss the old days. Like the music in the orginal Future Crew demo. 2nd Reality
This is by far one of the most impressive tracks ever, and it deserves many more views! First heard this in the UT99 UTClassic Map Pack v1.1. It was used on the map DMU-Asmadena. It was popular enough to be used on other fan-made maps, too.
Beemo Noire Yes! I have another map named DMU-Route66v2 from UTModern Map Pack, which also uses this song, and it fits with this map so well. I only played Route66v2 once, or twice almost three years ago because I was too preoccupied with other mods and maps, such as MonsterHunt, and UT Survival. I should go back, and play it again! On the other hand, DMU-Asmadena is one of my favorite maps with the WeaponLord mod!
your the man. I have been looking for this for ages. :D I used to have like 15 - 20 cd's with just this song on it for when i get older to reminisce, to bad i lost them all :/
before you tube I spent years trying to find this tune. all i remembered was that in the samples it spoke about trains. eventually i found it, what a tune.
Oh, old post, but still. He's with Iris right now and was previously the one-man act "Alpha Conspiracy" Which, if you like his old demo stuff, AC is pretty damned good. Iris is more euro synth oriented, but still good.
Check out MiTiS. Somewhat similar elements to Necros, but with more modern styles. His newest track "Born" is pretty fantastic. Look for the Mr.SuicideSheep upload, he tends to do the best audio transfers. Also, if you want a treat. Google "Mind Candy volume 1 point of departure" and go to the second link you get (should be grooveshark) It's the rework Andrew did which I talked about in my earlier post 2 years ago. =D
this song is imposible to find!! where the hell can i download it from? I first heard it years ago from an old custom doom level i downloaded when i was about 11- I'm now 25 and still can't find it
