Poison Ivy Remedy: Meet Yellow Giant Hyssop (new video lesson)
I am often asked: “What do I like to use once a poison ivy rash develops?” One of my go to plants is Yellow Giant Hyssop.
This stately Native American perennial, scientifically called Agastache nepetoides of the Lamiaceae family, helps us to get rid of poison ivy rashes, as well as to prevent them. I am excited for you to ID, harvest, and use this topical herbal remedy.
Yellow Giant Hyssop is astringent and drying. Use leaves and tender stems fresh throughout the growing season. Mash into pulpy juicy mass and apply juice thoroughly over the rash. Apply plant bits along with juice, or you can strain out the plant particles, if they feel irritating.
Apply plant juice to rash gently but thoroughly by dabbing on; do not rub on. Leave juice on skin and don’t wash off. Reapply throughout the day. If making quantities, store in the fridge and use up within a few days. Use a food processor for making larger quantities (you may need to add a few drops of water when pureeing).
Prevention is best! Yellow Giant Hyssop prevents urushiol (the irritating substance in poison ivy) from binding with our skin. Right after contact with poison ivy, apply Yellow Giant Hyssop’s juices all over the exposed area as we do with Jewelweed; see our Jewelweed video here: • Prevent Poison Ivy Ras...
Habitat
Look for Yellow Giant Hyssop in rich, moist to mesic (moderate amount of moisture) soil, in part sun to part shade in woodland edges, clearing, and gardens.
Hardy from USDA Zones 2-8.
Range: Native of Eastern North America: SE. Canada to Central & E. U.S.A.
Plant Dimensions: Height: 4-7 ft.; Width 2 ft.

I have anise hyssop but now I need this yellow giant hyssop to add to my poison ivy arsenal. Learning about jewel weed was game changer for me and poison ivy battle.

I've used a juicer in the past with the jewel weed. Then I keep in a spray bottle and if I worry I've touched poison Ivy or anyone feels itchy during the season we spray them down.

I recently moved back to the northeast and bought a home on many acres of which is mostly forest. I am in the process of identifying what is growing on the land. Your videos are most helpful !! THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge. I so enjoy watching and learning from your videos, please continue to make them. Once I get settled, I plan on enrolling in the Wild Food Health Boosters and Herbal Remedies course.

Thank you..I really enjoy the detail and clarity in your videos. Can you make this into a beeswax/ shea butter salve to carry around or must it be fresh plant matter?
@DinaFalconi

Thank you for appreciating the videos! For relieving poison ivy rash, I don't recommend using oil based products. So I don't recommend a salve for this.

Is there a good source of where one could purchase herbal plants? Cannot find any local nurseries that grows/sells true, non~treated, herbal plants. Most people look @me like I’m crazy, when I ask if they sell certain herbal plants, due to them not knowing what they are. I find that odd, seeing as we live (new transplants) in/near Native American Indian territories, in NE OK?

Hoping someone from your region comments for a local plant source (I'm in New York state and have sources here). Perhaps ask "United Plant Savers" in Ohio, also "Strictly Medicinal Seeds", and Richters (Canada) are mail order herb seed and, sometimes, plant sellers.

Can you use the Anise Hyssop as well that has purple flowers?
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 4 года назад
Not that I know of, yet anise hyssop is closely related so I wonder too if it can be used similarly. However I can tell by taste and feel that anise hyssop is not as drying.....

any chance you want to sell some seeds? I don't see a readily available source anywhere... Thanks, and love the book (Feasting and Foraging Kickstarter supporter!) and since recommended it to many friends who have purchased it as well..Martin

Thanks, yes, you can pinch it back some, but it does want to get tall.

Do it help with poison oak too?
@DinaFalconi
@DinaFalconi 2 года назад
Good question. Not sure. I have only used it for poison ivy. Still, since poison ivy, and poison oak (and poison sumac) produce an oil called urushiol that causes the rash, I bet yellow giant hyssop would be good for poison oak too.
